We built up a Mog and travelled from Cape Town to northern Uganda (and back again) - took a week short of a year. It was a fabulous experience and we have no regrets - reality is that the body was wide and she was heavy, drank diesel like crazy and was generally quite slow - especially on long inclines. We had every comfort imaginable, but we paid the price of higher entrance fees in many parks due to the size and weight and we sometimes battled to get through entrances due to width and height. It’s a trade-off between creature comforts and nimble movement. Good luck with your build and ultimately do whatever is right for you.

Here’s a proposal for a “Budget Build” ...Buy a second hand, readily available, competent 4x4 vehicle. Select the 5 or 10 essential modifications to build a safe, reliable, competent and comfortable vehicle with an aggressively LOW budget. Something for the average driver or family wanting to travel. It’s easy to build on a new frame and add all the bells and whistles with a (virtually) unlimited budget or gifted goodies...a much more interesting challenge is to create a build with a LOW budget. I’ll wager that most of your audience is in this demographic. Cheers...love the personal commentary you provide!

Lightweight, old-school camper; definitely the way to go. I am building a best of both worlds Defender on a seriously low budget with the main objective of having the ability to go where the standard vehicle can but with a Sankey based trailer (It's fun so far building in things using all standard Land Rover parts), you don't need all the gizmos (for the camper), basics work well and as you say, redundacy is key. I really appreciate ASPW's honesty here. I was a Patron supporter of his for a long time, but stopped because his builds have just been getting more and more complex for apparently no reason. I remember watching the build of this rig and thinking "Why?" His electrical systems are works of art but they are so totally unnecessary it's comical. Anyone that has spent any time off roading can tell you that simplicity, weight, power, and wheelbase should be at the forefront of the mind. It's like this build was purpose built to make those things as bad as possible. I'm glad he's starting fresh. Maybe get an Aeropress and leave the coffee maker at home this time...

I think the honesty here shows that even the most experienced person can succumb to the pull of "upgrading" the kit. When this happens we often lose sight of the necessity of the kit and start to think of what might be a bit nicer. How many of us would be willing to stick our necks out like this and admit when we have gone down that road, especially here on KZbin where there is likely a constant demand for something new and exciting. I applaud this video! You make some great points here and the admission that the design parameters, at the end of the day, were not really what he was after.

ASPW, maybe you could make an Excel list with all of the add-ons and equipment that you intend for your new Troopy build, with each of their corresponding weights. Include every spanner set, every liter of liquid, every kitchen accessory, and tabulate the total weight before you go and procure your items. That approach helped me a lot backpacking; there is a lot of weight that hides in the small things. Really enjoy your videos and best of luck, Daryl

ASPW, out of curiosity how many times did you take the camper off the back of the 79? I know a big factor in the build was so you could remove it, but to me it seemed like a camper canopy attached straight to chassis would have saved you a significant amount of weight, and brought the centre of gravity a lot lower too. It feels like the 79 build was a jack of all trades, but a master of none. Good luck with the next build, cant wait for the videos!

I was speculating something to the same thing. It seems like the truck itself is already built to a standard that has a lot of potential for whatever upfitting is done on the back. If the flat aluminum bed is removed and the quarters portion is designed specifically around the truck frame as a full cargo bed replacement, the quarters portion can be lower and space occuppied by the aluminum tray structure can be used for interior space. I can appreciate the trouble that Mr. White has, I'm attempting to figure out what I want to do to be able to tour the national parks, national forests, state parks, etc in the United States, without upgrading to a full-sized truck.

I admire your work and I always look forward to watching a new episode of your adventures. I understand your decision to sell your Aussie Dream Tourer to get back to the roots again. After various off-road vehicles, I now own an old Troopy. While upgrading this vehicle, the following points were most important to me: 1. Low weight, low over all height 2. Maximum off-road, no rock crawling capabilities 3. Vehicle technology that is as easy to handle as possible 4. A minimum of built-in electronics 5. Comfortable beds which do not require me actively setting them up every night 6. Heater, fridge, camping gas, water tank, solar power, additional fuel tank, some tools and rescue equipment 7. Some room in case of bad weather conditions 8. To build/fit as much as possible on my own I am not the youngest among men and therefore do not want to miss a certain level of comfort while out in the wilderness but there is always a fine line between just a campfire and "glamping". There are so many things that you built into your truck I would like to have too, however I try resisting the urge to buy even more nice and costly things to have. I am very curious to see how you will equip your next 4x4-Project and where your overland adventures will take you. Have a happy new year and greetings from Switzerland.

So when I clicked on this video I was blessed with the Ineos Grenadier commercial with the blonde Engliswoman telling me the story of 4x4s... my god that woman is smoking hot. Not only that but she walked like 1.5ks during it. Highly recommend watching it..lol ... Anywhoo if Andrew is selling this vehicle... its great news I cant wait to watch his new build video series. I really appreciate it when someone especially someone like Andrew admits what they spent so much time and money on was ... not what they wanted and a bit of a mistake. Cant wait for the new build...especially for an American who can never hope to buy one (troopy or 79) off Craigslist.

Very interesting video. I very well understand your thinking! Have you looked at the Crusinator pop up roof from bonetti campers. We have it and are very happy. The straight pop up gives you the roominess you talked about. As it is fiberglas it is relatively light (for sure lighter than the alucap tilt roof). I suggest to have a closer look,as I believe it could be a great solution for you!

Hi Beat, I am very interested in the Cruisinator due it’s a unique design and I can see the advantage of the internal volume gained from the vertical lift and the large footprint. As an owner, I was hoping you might be willing to answer a few questions about it? Do you know the approximate net weight gain of the roof conversion? Is there still enough space in the back and underneath the bed when it is deployed? Does it alter the feeling of the vehicle when driven? Initially I’d probably just get the roof conversion as I still need the rear bench seat so hopefully interior height is also not limited above the rear seating area. I’m hoping to visit Bonetti campers in a few months to see it. Cheers, Troy

Andrew, I love the lightweight idea and I’m looking forward to seeing which choices you will make in pursuit of saving weight. But why are you discussing wrap? The only thing that does is add weight to your vehicle, without any other benefits. I‘d omit wrap and choose a nice factory paint instead. Also, bear in mind the weight of copper cable, so keep it short and no thicker than necessary. This is exciting :)

The late Malcolm Douglas drove seven differant model LC TroopCarriers around Australia for 25 years. He produced over 50 films. The vehicles were mostly factory standard. The suspension was upgraded with aftermarket products. Where available the vehicles were optioned with factory diff locks and raised air intakes. Aftermarket steel rims were fitted. Winches were installed. Varying degress of bar work were fitted along with roof racks. He towed a single axle trailer at times. It really can be that straighforward.

There seemed to be alot of steel section going onto that build. I was a little surprised some of the structure wasn't Aluminium. Also many of these campers are kitted out way to much. I recall first time I saw an improvised camper van, it was a Transit Van with a mattress in the back and a drop down Table, that was it, at the time best we could do, but highly configurable for let's say short romantic trip, or three weeks climbing in Wales. We only went few hundred yards off road but principal seems sound. Having watched Freinds spending months hard work to do a van life coversion with solar built in cupboards, propane cookers running water, the whole nine yards. for an Alps trip, I was left thinking why not just Chuck a mattress in the back and your camping stuff in boxes and do just go?
@xpusostomos
@xpusostomos 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... have you done much touring? Taking everything in and out of boxes 2 or 3 times a day to cook something gets old real fast. The minimum convenient setup is a bed you can sleep on in minutes, a stove you can cook on within a few minutes, a fridge you can easily get to, a couple of camp chairs to sit on. And if you're serious, you probably want an awning so you can cook if it rains, so you're not shivering starving in the dark, and a shower because you'll feel disgusting after a few days. That rules out throwing a mattress and boxes in the back.
@logtothebase2
@logtothebase2 3 жыл бұрын
@@xpusostomos certainly agree when watching people pull up and be immediately cooking and cozy. My experience was if you get a system it was pretty easy to pitch up and be comfortable with a bit of faffing. I would still take same approach and use the finances for the experience rather than the vehicle, unless part of the reward is in the craft of building which I get. also per $ per lb you get a more capable truck for the trails, QED. Excellent conclusion. Too much stuff, too much weight really compromised offroad availability.
@Lordoftheflatbush
@Lordoftheflatbush 3 жыл бұрын
But you will only succeed when you are more critical on your requirements. Your initial reaction on the electrical system you think you need doesn’t bode-well. You seem to be addicted to your stuff. But do you really need it? A realistic risk assessment could help. So eg what’s the risk of having a puncture? How many punctures did I really have? And what options do I have to prevent this risk from happening or correct the consequences when the risk occurs. The lessons might be you overreact (2nd spare wheel and puncture repair kit and .....) resulting in too much stuff, too much weight. My suggestion is not to start with the stuff but critically assess your requirements based on the real risks involved in overlanding. Keep it simple, keep it basic and don’t overdo it. And set a budget limit would help also to force yourself to be critical on your requirements.
