After graduating USAF pilot training in 1969, I was assigned to fly the AC-47, with the initial training at England AFB in Alexandria, LA. After that training, I was sent to Vietnam. Most of my AC-47 training was at night, since that’s how the gunship worked. One night I was in the left seat of the airplane waiting to take the runway when the ground controller called on the radio and said to hold position for another aircraft to go ahead of us. I had the window open and heard those great engines as an A-26 taxied up beside us on the left. The props were enormous. I had never seen one before and it was a beautiful thing. Both aircraft, the 47 and the 26 were relics from WWII in a jet age being called back into the service of the country and headed to war again. Both had splendid records in Vietnam.

I was in the air force at the same time but was just an E3 at that time and a newly trained ground radio repairman. we maintained ground to ground and ground to air communications. I had a lot of respect for the pilots for sure. the only planes I ever flew in were a C-47, C-130, KC 135 and a C-141 but just as a passenger. the gunship plane I had heard of though.

Not on blue 100 octane. You're manifold pressure limited and getting 2000 each is iffy. But you're not hauling 8,000 pounds of bombs and full fuel either. And yes, you better have 4,000 ft runway or you're in very serious trouble if you abort. Yes I've flown the A26 with the CAF.

These were one of the first ships with "C Series" Pratt & Whitney R-2800s. COMPLETELY different animals from the earlier engines. ONLY aircraft engines ever made that did not require rubber vibration mountings. Pity there is no more 115/145 octane avgas so he could really open her up. My Dad worked at the Kansas City factory that first tested and then built them. It's designer Luke Hobbs would hear how much horsepower the R4360 28 cylinder made back in Hartford Connecticut and HE WOULD DUPLICATE IT with the 2800C. My Dad was on the throttle when they tested these things to FOUR THOUSAND HORSEPOWER (at 30 psi boost) FOR 24 HOURS. That fact was immediately classified Military Secret and stayed that way until Daryl Greenamyer got Congress to declassify it for the purpose of breaking the German Me109R's air speed record - in 1969!

I love the sound of a big radial and I will run outside of my home to watch them flying over. My wife used to ask what I was doing and I told her about that sound it is unmistakable. She doesn't ask anymore and sometimes she even goes out side with me. My youngest daughter loved aircraft and wanted to go to the airport and set at the end of the runway and watch them fly over. While she was in grade school we went to a airshow and one of these A26s was there and open to the public. So she was wanting to see the cockpit and when we got up there she looked out of the left window and realized how far off the ground she was and wild horses couldn't keep there. Lol True story, but then a air national guard Chinook dropped it's ramp and for the next hour it was up and down and threw the helicopter and finally she got the gunners seat too. Have a nice day.

I worked with a retired USAF pilot. He got selected for the A-26 program (during the Vietnam Era) and went all thru the training phases including firing the 50 cals! He had been flying the EC-47's so it was a fairly easy transition to make. He was checked out and ready to go and the Air Force cancelled that program as the wings were folding on flights. Kinda put an end to him flying the A-26. He said when he fired the guns, the entire cockpit filled with smoke!

More than a few A-26's were converted to corporate passenger use in the years immediately following WW2. This aircraft seems certainly to be one of them, noted by the large passenger windows in the fuselage aft of the wings. The replica 50cal guns in the nose were undoubtedly installed during the restoration. And what a magnificent restoration. It's is stunningly beautiful in the HIGHLY polished aluminum. It will be somebody's full time job to keep that polished finish up especially on the engine nacelles.
