I created this video to show the result following a red line adjustment made through an SCT tuner. I had been having issues with the fuel being shut off at about 6,000 RPM. I wasn't particularly concerned about 6,000 RPM considering the bottom end of my engine is forged. It was most annoying because anytime I ran the car up to the red line and shifted, it would sputter when I hit the pedal again in that next gear because I was basically exceeding the red line and the fuel was being cut off.
I initially thought that my fuel pump lacked the required volume, so I ordered a Walbro unit. I have not installed it yet, but I may still do that. I have another Mustang that can use the pump I currently have in this car. It felt really good not to worry about whether it was going to sputter every time I put my foot back on the gas pedal!
As many of you know, with these builds, it can be a challenge working out all these little bugs. This is just one more of those!

Hey thanks! It's been fun and I've learned a ton about the mod motor during the process. I had the car dyno tuned last year and it put down 325/381 NA. Turns out I was having a misfire on #3 due to only having 30psi compression lol. It had a short valve stem on that cylinder on one of the valves and the seat wasn't sealing. That all resulted in me pulling the engine again and working through several minor issues. I guess the reason behind me telling you all that is that I never did take it back to have the power checked again. Though, I'd love to. Hey Oliver. This engine had been built once before years ago and suffered a catastrophic failure when the crank bolt came loose (I'm assuming based on my teardown inspection) causing both banks to become out of phase. It destroyed itself. I purchased the car a few years ago as a non-runner. It was in pieces; no heads, exhaust, timing set, or intake installed etc. The guy's kid had torn everything apart in an attempt to figure out the extent of the damage some years ago and promptly gave up. I guess 10 years was long enough for him to have hauled it all around hoping to fix it some day. I bought the car and all the parts he had, including the many baggies full of hardware 😂. Lots of extra parts too. Upon tearing it down, I found a cracked head, all bent valves, a ruined cam and crank. The list goes on. They seemed to all be great parts, so I worked on finding places to salvage what I had if possible. I had a local machine shop repair the forged crank. A shop in California repaired the cam. I sourced a replacement head and had them port matched and milled at ChapmanRacingHeads to achieve the CR I wanted. It was a 2 year project getting it going. So, the short answer to your question is that I didn't source the kit myself, but I tore it all down, had things fixed, then rebuilt the engine in my garage and upgraded lots of other things. I upgraded the suspension and entire front end and full intake/exhaust system, tune etc. It's running N/A and put down 381/400. It's running a 3.75" stroke with factory bore, Crower Stage 2 cams, Patriot Stage 2 ported heads, 10.6:1 compression, BULLITT intake, BBK long tube headers, catless h-pipe, spintech super prostreet 9000 mufflers, full MMR front end/k member, raceland coilovers, BULLITT brakes and subframe connectors, CenterForce clutch, FPR 4.10 gears, steeda tri-ax short shifter. I'm sure I'm missing something. It's been great fun! Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for checking it out😎

If you have a stroker, generally you don't want to increase the redline. It's good you have Forged internals, but the longer stroke leads to more lower end torque but not necessarily more power at higher rpm. This is because a longer stroke means the piston spends less time at TDC, you would want to run more overlap on the exhaust and intake side. Since you have a SOHC, it wouldn't be possible to adjust the cam timing. The 2 valve is reliable, solid as a rock and doesn't need to rev high
@scotta5009
@scotta5009 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps you got your words mixed up, but longer stroke actually spends more time at TDC not less time. I just re watched an Engine Masters episode on long vs. short rods it's a good watch. Also, your comment, "wouldn't be possible to adjust the cam timing" is confusing because you can adjust cam timing on SOHC but I do understand what you mean by not being able to adjust overlap like on a DOHC unless you got a different cam with different overlaps. Anyway, the stock rev limit on a 4.6 2v is around 6.5k anyway so he's really just letting the engine go to 6.5k as intended vs only 6k
@ponycorral99
@ponycorral99 Жыл бұрын
Some great comments, thanks! I'll have to watch that video if you have a link. I think the factory redline for the 99-04 GTs was about 5800 rpm. It is my understanding that a longer stroke would mean that the piston actually spends less time at TDC due to the fact that piston speed is higher because it has to travel a longer distance in the same amount of time (assuming you're talking about the same rpm for both). Like if you had 2 guys walking the same pace but one had longer legs than the other; the one with longer legs would cover more distance in the same time and his feet would travel faster across the ground because the pace (RPM) is identical. So for an engine, in 1 revolution of the crank, the piston will travel faster through the bore with the longer stroke (legs) than with the shorter stroke. One equation to figure this out is: Stroke x RPM ÷ 6 = Piston Speed. So, for example if we used 6500 RPM and a stroke of 3.75", the piston speed would be 4,062.5 feet per minute (FPM), however, if you used the factory stroke (6,500 and 3.543"), you get a piston speed of 3,838.25 FPM. You really wouldn't want anything above about 4k fpm with a factory GT setup. Given those numbers, sure, you could easily rev the factory engine higher (that piston speed is still pretty conservative), but they tend to run out of air due to valve size, cam limits, throttle body/intake, compression, exhaust etc. My car doesn't suffer from that AS much (but it's still NA) because I've done things to improve airflow like throttle body, intake, ported heads, larger valves, different cams, higher compression, headers etc. I'm typically shifting around 6500. Occasionally I'll hit about 7k in 1st, but it's not often. But just remember, it's that piston speed that will turn your engine into a grenade. I think that's where having tougher internals is critical, along with good hardware. I'm running forged internals and all ARP main studs and head studs, flywheel bolts, Teksid aluminum block, etc. Even when I'm pushing it to 7k, I'm only hitting a piston speed of 4375 FPM. Even then, it's for short bursts (usually only 1st/2nd). It really helps make sense of how someone can have an 8500+ RPM 289 GT350 way back in the day. If you apply the same formula, you see why. 8500 x 2.87 ÷ 6 = 4065 FPM (not bad!). So, if your car has the right lungs and it doesn't suffer from asthma, you can really get it up there with the right stuff! I hope that was some food for thought. Sorry for the ramble, and thanks again for the comments 😎
@brarautorepairs
@brarautorepairs Жыл бұрын
@@scotta5009 you are correct that longer stroke spends more time at TDC. However, I was thinking that piston speed goes up at a specific RPM. There is trouble filling a cylinder with a longer stroke so the recommendation is to have more overlap for exhaust scavenging.
@ponycorral99
@ponycorral99 Жыл бұрын
@@scotta5009 It's sure interesting stuff! I don't claim to know it all by any stretch, so I do appreciate the feedback. It makes sense that the piston speed is different at different points of the stroke since the rod spends time crossing over during that piston dwell time at top and bottom. In fact, I'll bet there are really smart people who could write out all the logarithmic math for it 😂. I too am a big fan of the New Edge! I think it's one of my favorites. I have another 99 GT (stock) that I'm slowly accumulating parts for. That one may end up with some boost eventually as well! I've got the 4V heads, aluminum block and 01 Cobra intake for it so far. Too much fun! I'm glad you stopped by for a watch😎

Absolutely! I just can't justify spending the cash on the tune. It was around $600 to have it done and I had it there a few times working out bugs. I definitely notice an increase in performance from how it was before the valve issue was fixed. Not to mention, the shop is quite a drive from where I live and the freeways kinda suck here in and around the city. I hate taking the car on that stuff because it's a very stiff ride and I just end up getting pissed off 😂. Plus the gearing is just better around town for using it as toy, which it is😁.
