We've got one of the LARGEST engines that can possibly fit underneath the hood and between the strut towers of my Mustang! I have wanted to build one of these Ford Mod Motors for a very long time, but one of the challenges is that its over 30 inches wide, and will just barely fit in the mustang. But, Ford did it with their 2000 Mustang Cobra R, so I figured why not?

Depends . The static compression could get a good bump, use some high lift long duration cams, good set of headers, use a PI 4.6 intake with port matched adapters, a 72 mm throttle body , c&c the stock heads...should be really close to 500/500 on E85 . You'd be better off using a non pi 4.6 with pi heads on it , c&c port/bowl/valve job , long 4 into 1 headers and a 125 HP kit of voodoo juice. The most important thing on any non-terminator mod engine is to get rid of the flimsy powdered metal rods. If your tune is anything other than perfect you will regret keeping the stock rods.

In an Aussie boss 260 with long tubes , herrod camshafts , boss 290 intake and full twin 2.5" exhaust with hi flow cats on a Falcon and went 350rwhp. Before the camshafts with all those mods it made 300 at the wheel. I know you guys somehow get more HP for same mods and mile an hour than we do. With stock r exhaust manifolds and the possibly smaller cams from the Lincoln you'd be hard pushed to make over 280 here. unless they're understated the Lincoln's have 300hp at 5000 rpm the 260 kw here is 350 HP at 5500 rpm. Unsure if it's the camshafts or the intake manifold but you may have smaller sticks again then we did. The 290's had larger camshafts than the 260's again. Interested to see how this goes with decent diff gears . We had the AOD box with 3.45's , car was more impressive 100 - 200 KMs than it was 0-100.

here in Australia we got two 5.4L for our Falcons from 2003-2010 the first was the triton V8 which made around 220kw (300hp) and 470nm of torque, the second one was the Boss line up of motors (not to be confused with the Boss engines of old) they were a 5.4L block with 4.6L heads and a unique to Australia intake manifold (a few guys from the states were actually getting in the Boss 260 intake as they breathed better than Ford US designs), the first guise were the Boss 260 for the XR8 Falcons and Boss 290 for the FPV Falcon GT the numbers represented their power 260kw 290kw around 350hp and 380hp respectively over time the Boss lineups gained more Boss 302 and Boss 315 the last of the 5.4s were the Boss 315 was in our FG model FPV Falcons from 2008 untill 2010 when the engine no longer met Euro IV Emission compliance, a comparison i currently have a 2016 S550 GT mustang and it makes 306kw from factory, our Falcon GT with a 5.4L in 2008 made more power and torque than the S550 Mustang GT untill the update 2018 model, Ford Australia then ended up supercharging the Coyote V8 in 2012 and renamed it the Miami V8 and it too made more power than the S550 coyote (as expected) i owned untill about a month ago a 2008 BF Falcon XR8 which had the Boss 260 5.4 in it and it was an absolute cracker of a engine, strong mid range and top end power and torque but very lacking down low esp against the coyote, great choice of engine look forward to seeing further builds of the 5.4 a highly under-rated motor

You forgot the 07-14 GT500 engines, but those are still pretty expensive anyways. I had one of these motors and was going to swap it into my King Cobra, but the 4.6 4v was the tallest that would fit in that configuration. But I had swapped on the navigator heads to that 4.6, but the navigator heads are the most commonly sought after 4v heads (aside from the obvious supercar and cobra R heads). You could also do a GT500 intake/supercharger set up! Those are relatively cheap and make good power. Nice thing about the 5.4 is that you can respond the coils and use the factory harness and computer!

There are tons of good blower options for the 5.4 gt500s. I have a vmp gen3r on my 07 gt500 it's a torque monster and so is the 5.4 so they're a good pairing together. My gt500 did 740/733 to the wheels on 19 psi with a stock long block, long tubes, full exhaust and twin 69 tbody/jlt 123 intake. Tuned on 93/boostane (100 octane) it's a monster. It was over 700 tq at the tires from like 3000-5500 rpm which is crazy and it was still pulling over 600 tq at 6500 rpm. Saying it's an annual is an understatement lol. I also have 410 gears and 200 lbs weight reduction (it weighs about 3700 without me in it). 5.4 is badass i always loved em. I think you might be wrong on the stock horsepower output of the Ford 5.4 32valve. The stock 5.4 truck engine, single overhead came is 336 HP. The stock 5.4 32valve double overhead cam is 400HP. Not sure where you got your numbers. A stock Chevy 5.3 truck motor is 295 HP. The Ford generates more HP due to the overhead cam setup.

Better for the long term to save the 8.1 for another truck (or SUV) build. However, you've got the potential of a nice "sleeper" Mustang that puts 900 hp to the pavement. The broke guy in me says go budget, but the motorhead in me says build it right. I've gotta say Option 2 is my vote, so I can live vicariously through your build. Keep up the great work!

Every Ford Falcon V8 in Australia from mum and dad cars to Ford Performance Vehicles FPV Boss 260, Boss 290, 302, 315 and 345 was the last ford V8 ( that's the output in KW) came with the 32 Valve Quad Cam motor , it was Designated as the Miami Motor in Australia, because Ford Australia redesigned the heads and ram intake manifold . I never use the Miami name on the basis you cant change a motors family designation by changing a few parts , its still a mod motor .It was in the Falcons , some Fairlanes and LTD models but those two up market models for some reason also got the 3 valve single over head cam , Utes, Station Wagons, etc , it came with T56 Borg Warner manual 6 speed or 6 speed auto . The most common Ford V8 in Australia outside probably the 302 Cleveland and 351 Cleveland V8s of the 1970s to 1984/5. And don't give me the " impossible to get one " costs $900 Australia dollar in a shipping container from Sydney , plenty of importers around that will do it , prob 80 percent of Australian wrecking yards got at least 2 sitting in the shed , and Australia got free trade deal with US so important duty nothing these days . Like you prob won't get the 315 kw or 345 kw but for sure a Boss 260 or Boss 290 . If your lucky the last of the Aussie Falcons 2017 had Supercharged Coyote s but they pretty thin on the ground , they are Ford Factory Supercharged though , and it's been pointed out I should be clear the 345 kw Supercharged was the last motor in the Ford XR8 Sprint . Just to be clear.

I'm doing a 1983 Nissan Patrol with a 1995 Gen II LT-1 from an Impala with a TH400/NP205 twin stick transfer case on 1-ton axles (D60 front and 14 bolt rear) with links and coil-overs. I’m currently doing the same, TRYING to stick with the “budget”😅 I’m hoping to have it together n runnin by spring ‘23. Have 3 “ponies” to choose from to stuff it in, then the other 2 will get the other engines currently in their sleeping bags, 5.0 “GT40” n my baby 408W! Like you I’ve got too many things going in the garages (and yard) and fighting a rare liver “C” word 3yrs now. Makes everyday a gift and sometimes a challenge so I’d go crazy if I didn’t have these projects to keep me from giving up. How did you manage to get the intake? I have the mmr intake plates n Boss 302 intake , was trying to keep from cutting the hood if I go with the 01 GT, the ‘97 was going to be turbo 3.8 but I have a 4.6 I thought about putting in it, Jasper reman # 3! So far my to do list to the 5.4 is replace the oil pump, pan/pick up tube, put in a timing chain kit in, water pump, do the coolant tube mod on the back of the heads, port the intake adapters to match the heads, there’s a lot to take out! The intake has to be modified at the outside part of the intake at the injector bosses so it will fit between the heads ! Finding headers within the budget was a pain, was not using anything but long tubes, gain hp there! Using an auto so I’m sure a few light mods will be req 2 em. Pace setter 70-3229 for a 98 Cobra, got the cheapest ones, going to paint em after I get done w/mod em! Ceramic coat b nice but I may go twin turbo but right now I have a D2 n a P1 I’m thinking about…! This is as far as I’ve got , I was happy as hell to see someone else doing this too, n try to stay with the “budget” which goes gray after a few! Used parts are crazy, the intake cobra cams USED are impossible to find n the 03-04 5.4 dohc I have no idea if they would do anything but $1700 for only cams is a project killer for sure! Good luck n sorry , I can’t keep my msgs short, been tryin!

Honestly had this very build in my mind for a 2000s thunderbird. The Ford GT top end on the navigator bottom was my build idea. Power to wight is spot on for a five seat chassis. Thought it could be a perfect sleeper. At least 500hp and decent mph, with no inspection issues(smog). Then my son was born our fourth, so a third row became a necessity. We lucked out and ended up with a bush estate secret service yukon xl 8.1, huge and drinks like a fish but always starts and never gets stuck in maine snow lolol. How LT is planning to punch the 500-550hp to 900 I'll love to watch as the GT with the 5.4 didn't get all that much power. Of course the Ford GT is way lighter and ment for 200mph+ LaMans racing (24 hours+straight depending on individual race). So max power is is not end goal with the GT, control is, therefore lighter with less power. At any rate always wondered how it would pull next to a big block once properly built. Happy to watch, Good luck.

So if a 32v 5.4 fits a 514ci will fit. They share the same size measurements. But to be cool a guy would take a 7.4 and put a crank from a 6.2 ( some changes to the crank shaft for the oil pump) and make a new age " cammer". The 32v 5.4 is not a bad choice but it's a truck engine with truck cams designed to move 7500 lbs from a dead stop. Low end torque in a mustang will make it hard to launch unless you put work into the chassis , trans and final gear. I would suggest if you do have to use an auto find a 4r100 out of a lighting as they had the zf power stroke internals from factory. I don't feel the added mass of the 5.4 32v makes it worth the effort and money ( ford's are never cheap to build unless you know what factory parts work together) . Honestly you could get the same perf from dropping a 4.2 v6 in that car ( 4.2 is a stroked 3.8 ) and ran a super coupe blower . Same block means same mounts, that car came with a 3.8 as an option so you have a slew of factory parts to use. The aftermarket for the V6 was strong so many options there as well. The blowers from the super coupes could be upgraded, smaller pulley, larger unit...more than one😈. I've been down this road but using crown Vic's not mustangs. There will be more help simply because mustang but Ford tends to be stingy when it comes to available room. Also last note.....use a tubular k member and thank me later.
@misterbulger
@misterbulger Жыл бұрын
I was comparing measurements with other smallblocks and the 4.6 is bigger in dimensions than most small blocks out there, so you should have a good amount of room to work with... it is very long and very wide. That being said, I am swapping a Mustang 2 K member and independent front suspension into an 87 Chevy Sprint (1500lb Geo Metro daddy,) The car will only be around 2000lbs with a small block in it and I think the suspension will be way too stiff, so maybe a heavier big block is what's needed to make it ride right! You sir get a subscribe. I like the way you think and the way you got me thinking.
