I like your tips. Good to see those of us in our "golden years" out there riding our bikes. It's a lot of fun, and you do meet a lot of nice people here and there on your rides. Farmers market is one of my favorite places. I would add this one additional tip: Subscribe to a variety of cycling channels and urban/traffic cycling vlogs to learn about ways to stay safe, keep your bike from getting stolen, eat right, and to keep you motivated.

🐳A thumbs up … I could do a video about me getting back into biking at 76. BRAKES are your best friend. Your 5 first senior rides should be low challenge turns and moving as slowly as possible. Don’t take anything for granted. One fall can be disastrous, especially if you are on blood pressure medicine or stats. Hills should come slowly. Helmets are cool. Wear one. People will be impressed. Try to get the best bike for you. A hand me down racer that you know nothing about is asking for trouble. It’s not “just getting back on a bike” for a senior. It’s dangerous, not to mention cars, people, etc. BUT WHAT A WONDERFUL SENSE OF FREEDOM! I’m hooked.

Almost 72; and I ride my road bike which I bought and I started to ride again 23 years ago and really love/d it. It is light and I can mount it to bike rack without problem. In fact, I am planning to pack it up inside my small car; and I think I can do it. Going to bike shop is almost like a therapy; anyhow bike ride exposes me to fresh air, relaxes my hip joint, and makes me feel less dead in the head... Enjoy your channel!

I would add as we age most of us lose flexibility and need lower gears , but even more importantly shorter cranks. If when you are young you probably had 170mm cranks, add 40 or 50 years you might be better with 165mm or even 155mm? As a short rider 5'4' /164cm i have had to put up with 170mm most of my life as short cranks are not widespread. Recently i switched from 165mm which was to long but just about ok , to 140mm which is very short, this makes a world of difference. As the trend now is to go shorter and shorter cranks even tall riders can benefit from shorter cranks , more so as we age .

Oh your voice so calming...good tips. I went out on my bike for the first time in ages... it felt so good, till I tried stopping to tie a loose shoe lace.I had stopped, both feet on the ground and I fell on my butt trying to swing my right leg over... darn it was so embarrassing... do you have any tips for gracefully dismounting ?

Thank you. I always take 10 -15 seconds with my feet on the ground before swing my leg over. I think this helps reestablish your balance standing.

Thanks Lacey. I’m 79 and haven’t ridden a bike since I was 10 years old. A friend whose wife died recently gave me her bike, helmet and backpack. It’s a very fancy multi-gear bike. The brakes are hair trigger. I took it out for amy first ride yesterday and ended up going down hill pretty fast, tapping the brakes to slow down, but I did t see a curb on the other side of the sidewalk ramp up and ended up flipping off the curb. I got a nasty scrape on my elbow and knee. I don’t know how to gear down. Also, when I started riding, the gears didn’t engage at all. I walked it for a while and then got on and they engaged. Any tips?
@LadyP12 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you fell, Take it slow, try to ride on a flat surface and work with the gears. Here is a video that might help. good luck. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eISzYZiKZ7etjK8

My reply is that you owe your body an apology. I am 76 and I have no intention of ever falling. It is not an option for me. When we seniors fall we are negligent per se. Ride a bike that you know that you can control going as fast as is sensible, then take it down a notch. // There are many amazing bikes out there now that are not as expensive as a good musical instrument. Break out the IRA and get something great!

the problem with raising the seat is you can't stay seated when you stop the bike. You have to stand. Besides... I feel vulnerable to a fall when I have my seat at"the proper height".
@ricksilk4854 жыл бұрын
split the difference between fully raised and too low then gragually increase seat hieght when you get more confident ....... maybe
@bikerider.563 жыл бұрын
You need a forward pedal designed bike such as an Electra or Sixthreezero. This design allows you to place your feet on the ground when stopped while getting the proper leg extension while riding.

After getting up off the floor when seeing the price of your bike, I'm embarrassed to ask this question but decided I'd jump in on YT. I haven't ridden a bike in 50 years but would love to get back into it. However, my Social Security budget doesn't allow for the high priced models unless I save for a while. Is it possible to find a halfway decent starter bicycle for under $500? I would be starting in my neighborhood where the streets are flat + no traffic during the daytime. Thank you.

@robduncan599 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I am only 164cm and struggled all my life with 170mm, recently managed to aquire a bike with 165mm cranks but even that was to long , but i could see a improvement. More recently i made up a bike from a few old donor bikes and a crankset with 40 teeth and 140mm crank arms this came off a cheap folding bike ,thinking this might be to short ? But no this is a fantastic improvement very close to my ideal. Definitely short cranks make a huge difference. 170mm is fine if you are average - tall hight, young, athletic, but ageing less athletic or shorter like me 170mm is a disaster.

I"m sorry, but tip 3 and 4 is wrong. Most people, and especially women, have their seats too high, which not only puts your knees at risk, but also your lower back (her seat position is correct as shown in video though). And please, do NOT ride with the pedals under your toes like she's suggesting here, as that causes a lot more problems than it solves (not to mention that people without cycling experience don't have the calf muscles needed to pedal like this). Instead, place the pedal under your midfoot, and do some squats, holding on to a chair or similar i needed, every now and then. Your body will thank you later 🙂
