it will only be better. the whole point of allot of this guy's videos are to prove that fudd lore is just plain wrong. people claim 556 cant do this or that and you need a 308 for this or that and you cant shoot past a mile unless you have x caliber with y scope and z eye pro with w magazines. the 14.5 goes to show that an sbr can do the job, so an 18 is kinda redundant and obviously will perform better.

@@paulbarclay4114 re-read my comment. If you still don’t get it; my point is that showing an 18” upper would be redundant in the video. Because it would have better results than the 14.5”. Do you understand? The 14.5 already shows the capability of 556 at that range. The 18 would only perform better. Anyone could figure that out by being sentient. There is no other way to word this to make you understand, if you still don’t get it; there is nothing anyone can do for you

Better yet, 18" in .223 wylde would really show what the 77gr can do. Depending on if you want to switch things up with some "on the bench" footage, you could do a weight comparison. Just some thoughts, I really enjoy this channel hope you do well.

Same here the 5.56 is great I have great success with it but for energy on target I want a bit more ass behind it. I have switched to my HK MR762 with ATACR 1-8x24 as my primary “battle rifle” with my SCAR 20s in 6.5 cm or my Armalite Super SASS in 308 both with their own ATACR 7-35x56 as my mid range and my MRAD in 300 Norma as my long range with its 7-35x56. Definitely picking my HK MR762, the 175 SMKs or TMKs really do get it done. It was interesting to see the overlap until you got out to 835. Impressive shooting as always, you have me curious about what my HK MR556 with the 77gr TMK's will get out to now......I have to wait till the ammo comes back in-stock before I burn unobtanium ammo trying to get on your level. With half the magnification on my MR556 to boot (1-8 Accupower Mil reticle)

Oh man, your MR556 would easily get to 800 with the TMK and I’d bet you’d have decent success out to 1000 or so. Might need a bit more magnification to spot your shots though. Yeh.. Been to 1km few times with 16" MR223 and many times to shorter distances. Out to 800m pretty good hit ratio. Beyond 700 wind is easily very tricky, at 900-1000 very difficult. Original barrel just burned out at 12-14K of ammo. Waiting for LW barrel to arrive.. Super fun.

With 24 years of military experience with both chamberings I don’t consider the 5.56 a scopable rifle at all. Battle sights or a red dot sight are all that is needed on such a small chambering. I have both these chamberings in DPMS rifles, however, the .308 has a 24” barrel and is scoped but still, in practical applications, ie not shooting paper or steel, it is still only effective out to about 900 yards. Why 900 yards? Simply because the bullets will NOT open up to cause enough damage beyond such a distance. I use either Swift A-Frames or Sirocco IIs because they are bonded at that is what I would use if the situation demand the necessity to utilize said rifle. Beyond 850-900 yards you are in magnum territory such as .300 Win Mag or .300 or .338 RUM and here again I shoot Swift A-Frames or Sirocco IIs because that is what I hunt with. When I am shooting I am practicing for the application that rifle is intended. Shooting paper and steel is one thing, shooting to put meat on the table is quite another. I am a busy custom gunsmith/gun engraver and don’t have time to plink paper and steel as I must dedicate time for such things. I enjoy you videos though.

Great video. I’ve come to the realization that for a do-all around the farm that I don’t really have much use for 5.56 aside from training and the cost. I either need to shoot quietly or reach out and drop something. 5.56 not being ideal for dear, I prefer an ar10 as a do-all for deer, coyote, and general target shooting between 100-600y, and 300blk for anything inside of that. Set up a DD5 v3 with a mark 5hd and SD-E. My only regret is underestimating the value of an illuminated reticle in a FFP scope. Will need to fix that eventually.

You are an outstanding marksman. As a tactical caliber that offers lots of rounds for not too many pounds, it's hard to beat the 5.56. But the 7.62 x 51 makes a great DMR and general-purpose cartridge. It stays supersonic out to 1,000+ yards. And 2,000+ FPS at 300 yards at typical bullet weights lets you ethically take elk or moose at common hunting distances. To me, the .308 is the cartridge Goldilocks would choose. And its ubiquity as 7.62 x 51 NATO makes it a good SHTF cartridge. Like some of your commentators below, I have good consistency and tight groups using Hornady cartridges. I like to target shoot with the same ammo I hunt with; Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain. It's got good velocity, good B.C., good terminal performance and above all, good consistency and accuracy. I'd love to see how your .308 performs with Hornady Match 168 grain. It retains good velocity at the longer distances.

VERY WELL DONE! You have a great scientific method to your presentation. Some may find it a bit dry but it shows that you are taking nearly everything into consideration and minimizing the number of variables. I do feel that you may have missed a pretty important PRO for the 7.62mm at longer ranges and that is that it seemed to be affected less by cross winds than the 5.56mm. Granted, it presents more sail area, the surface area exposed to the wind, but it has enough mass to reduce the crosswind effect more than the lower mass of the smaller bullet. I think this speaks to the smaller groups you had with the 7.62mm and greater number of hits.

Impressed/ surprised by the results/performance with the 14.5 at 830. Overall I’d pick a 308 for application but as DM goes, just slap and optic on what you’re issued and start plug’n. Happy Hunting

Exactly what I was trying to showcase here! My opinion optics are the biggest part of the dmr package. Sure caliber choice is important but as shown here ballistics of the 556 and 762 are super close. My opinion that means you can focus the decision making on other areas…. Round carried, weight, cost, rifle size etc

I'm also a 7.62x51 fan. I have a Frankenstein AR-10 build that will put 10 rounds in a 1/2-5/8" hole at 100 yds. and even with me on the trigger put more than not on a IPSC target at 1,000 meters. The 5.56x45 was designed to be an effective round out to 300 meters.

I did 2 Tours in Afghanistan as a Squad Designated Marksman and 1 somewhere else. I got home from Afghanistan the 2nd tour and built a 6.5 Grendel 18in setup. Its ideal and works like a 308 but has the weight of a 5.56. I carried an m14 in my first Afghanistan tour, an sr25 in my 2nd and my other tour i had an 18in 5.56 and 77gr smk. The 5.56 took multiple rounds to stop a threat, and several were able to walk away. Under 200m, it was all the same. The point is that you shouldn't tie your hands as a civilian. Id really like a 243 but the ar10 platform is too heavy. From our class the 168gr was what they were trying to mimic with the 77gr bullet. That is why it wasnt 75gr or 80gr. The 77gr was almost identical so most dope matched up from the 168 that was current when the Navy ordered the mk262. The Army followed suit because the dope matched. The 175 came later with the M118LR change. From what i hear the 175gr is being walked back as supplies come down to prewar levels. Most units are still stocking 168 for their sdm.

Would be interesting to see what you look like from the targets perspective at 500, 800, 1000. How visible are you to the naked eye?
@The10thManRules Жыл бұрын
Someone in the prone at those distances, especially someone that doesn't want to be seen (low exposure, low contrast target) is impossible to spot for someone not trained in counter sniping.

Great shooting, you really keep the gun steady on the scope cam. Do you shoot off of a rear bag or just build solid position between your body and the bipod? A lot of viewers who don’t shoot a lot of long range may think this looks easy watching you!
@MountainsMulletsMerica3 ай бұрын
When shooting prone off the ground I use a rear bag. Running with a bipod up front and a bag in the rear makes for an amazingly stable position. I wouldn’t say it’s hard to get that stable prone but it’s taken me years of practice to get the position nailed down. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel!

Terrific video! This confirms what I thought for a while; an ACOG for 5.56 will work fine for .308.

Pretty impressed by 14.5” at 500 and 800 yds. My DMR is 18.5” BCM and I would think it would do well at 600-800 yds. I also have a 18” .308 but as you note, it’s big and heavy. For good hits to 600 and even 800, hard to argue against 5.56. Thx for video. Love how much space you have to shoot.
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
Yep my opinion the 556 is a great option if you’re shooting out to 600-800 yds. The rifle and gear setup is so much handier with 556 so major benefit if you’re having to carry the rifle and ammo for any amount of time. For me the benefit of 308 really shows up if you’re consistently shooting in that 800+ yd range. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video man. Reaffirmed my choice to go with a 14.5 556 SPR. Definitely no slouch, and carries a bit easier as well.
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
My opinion 14.5" is the best choice! Very versatile barrel length...... short enough to be handy up close and long enough to push out to reasonable distance if needed. Unpopular opinion here but I don't see the point in a 556 AR with a barrel over 14.5" haha

I enjoy both calibers. The 556 makes a great choice for all around being lighter and capable of holding more ammo. However, I’m more and more leaning towards 6 arc which gives better energy than the 556 but still uses a small frame vs the 308.
@willo7734 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m with you. 6 ARC is an awesome cartridge, especially in a bolt gun because you can load it up to about 10% higher pressure. A Howa Mini 6 ARC barreled action plus a stock or chassis (MDT Oryx is amazing and cheap) makes for an inexpensive but high quality long range rifle.
@tyronejackson6593 Жыл бұрын
6 ARC is great. My buddy built one that we have been playing with. I like it but I don’t think I would want it for anything other then target shooting or hunting. Ammo options are slim and expensive. For a “DMR” or any other mil inspired rifle I want something common and plentiful.
@MountainsMulletsMerica Жыл бұрын
I’m right there with you. I really want something like a 14.5” or 16” 6arc. Would make for a super handy package that offers great performance out to 1000yds or so. 100% planning to get a 6arc upper for the channel this year so hope you’ll stay tuned to check it out!

When u talk about drop of 556 vs 308, there are a few scopes that use the same bdc reticle. I no swampfox has an lpvo that uses the same bdc for 55gr 556 and i think 155gr 308

Didn't take me long to see that the 556 has a much flatter trajectory up to a considerable distance. 762 well, it's a larger round. I'd expect to to perform better. It should perform better than it does. For the most versatility, I go 556. I really like this stuff. Subscribing to you now;)
