Well I wish that it was going to be just a coil pack but who am I kidding? It’s 2020! The Dodge HEMI 5.7 valve lifters and the camshaft seem to be failing all over the place. Just look at KZbin. Chrysler must know about this. I can’t imagine what it would cost to recall the lifters in all the cars and trucks out there. It really is too bad that there are a lot of people out there, myself included, that are going out and buying vehicles that have just a slight tick in the engine. In my opinion that slight tick is the beginning of an expensive repair. I love getting my hands dirty fixing things. I love the challenge of figuring things out. I also love the fact that there are so many great KZbinrs out there that we can rely on to help us out when we get stuck! I know that I made a lot of references to KZbin while working on this project! I wish you the best of luck in all your projects and thanks for watching!

For everyone wondering how long it takes to do this job, it took me 4 hrs to take everything apart and 6 to put it back together. I'm a mechanic so it was my first time doing one of these. A 2017 ram with 107000 miles. About $2000 on Mopar parts, just hope it lasts a little longer this time!

My 2013 RAM has a tick and a miss-fire and I'm certain this is the issue. The engineers at Dodge should hang their heads in shame! This is an absolute disgrace, especially the fact that Dodge just seems to be burring their heads in the sand about the issue. I'll never buy another Dodge product again, and I've owned nothing but Dodge my entire life. My old 74 Challenger will be the last Dodge I own. At least they seemed to know how to build engines back in the day that could stand the test of time.

I had a few magnets in the oil pan already and I flushed the oil about three times before starting up. Given the condition of my camshaft, there wasn’t a lot anyway. It does have four-wheel-drive, but that really wasn’t the reason. I was trying to avoid having to take the oil pump off.

Yes it is because the roller bearings inside the lifters fail and then the lifter just grinds around the lobe. Chrysler has said that they have a new supplier for the lifters now. I have 201,000 miles on the truck so it would be about time for them to go again I guess. Let’s hope not! 🤞

I have a 2003 Ram 2500. Bought it 2 years ago from the original owner with 104k and it now has 128k. I always use Mobil 1 full synthetic with Mobil 1 filter and i change the oil every 3500 - 4000 miles. i havent experienced any issues and the truck runs quiet and strong. One thing that I've found is that you need to check the oil level between changes! For some reason it will use 1 to 1-1/2 quarts between service intervals. I also owned a 2005 Durango that had 40k when I bought it and 100k when i sold it. Same issue, had to keep an eye on the oil level. Both of these Hemis ran fantastic, and I always do my own work because I don't trust dealerships after hearing so many horror stories. The Hemi is a great engine for the most part, but it still amazes me that the old 318 small blocks and slant sixes could go hundreds of thousands of miles with such little maintenance and take incredible abuse with little fuss. I guess newer isnt always better.

Great video, today's modern oil lacks ppm content of ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphates) and MOS2 (molybdenum disulfide),two major anti wear additives in lubricants have been reduced over the years to a bare minimum results are obvious especially in engines with more HP AND TORQUE that REQUIRES 0W-20 or 5-20 motor oil. Fortunately issue is easily solvable with just adding small amounts of ZDDP additive and mos2 friction reducer readily available online and in stores. If you would like to go next level with your additive package CERA TEC is ceramic solid lubricant (hexagonal boron nitride) long therm effect up to 30.000 miles, Additives that i have mentioned are in my personal vehicles since new they required cycles up to ten days of driving to get full effect its called chemical engineering

Nice I have a 2013 5.7L Jeep and I have been adding that additive since new. Just changed my oil pan at 135k miles and it looks good! And the parts of the cam I could see looked nice. I wonder if I can get to 200k without any MDS issues. Jeep is in very good shape so I would definitely pull and build the motor if that ever happened.

I've seen these camshafts that were bad..its unreal just how bad they get. Unfortunately for you dodge owners with this problem..the issues are further than you think. All that metal that the bad lifter ground off the cam is floating about the internals of your motor slowly but surely wiping out all the bearings that will eventually fail. Just a matter if time. Now I know there's those of you who think" that the oil filter will or should collect this shaved metal. Truth is..80% of your oil bypasses the filter. Best thing you dodge runners can do is try to catch the problem before it gets bad. Simple magnetic drain plug or use a magnet while you drain your oil will help you see the fine metal particulate...or cut your oil filters open an look. I run an 06 dodge charger..quite hard all the time..with no issues yet. But I also run a good oil an keep up with the maintenance. One thing I will share with you dodge hemi runners is this..don't let them idle for long periods of time..hemis don't like that ..fire it up cold , give a it minute to go thru its checks and balances and drive it normally till its fully warmed up...which is about 20 minutes under normal driving. Thats what it was designed to do from dodge. Not about to write any books here..alot more I could share on the subject, Best of luck

I bought a Charger RT with the performance package. It is a 2007 and i have babied it since new. It only has 75k easy miles . Never raced and always did the timely maintenance . The other day i went out and started it up to go to the store and the lifter is ticking very loudly. This car is pristine inside and out and i am so bummed about this. I had heard all the horror stories but never thought i would have the same problem at only 75k easy miles, but she is ticking like the time bomb she is now. It really sucks as i am an old man who was expecting to die before she did. I cannot afford to pay so much either as i am on a small fixed income. How do you purchase warranty at another dealer?
@bradrichaud6533
@bradrichaud6533 3 жыл бұрын
A word of advice. Read that warranty word for word. Especially when it comes to oil changes. A lot of them are based on where you live and whether or not you change your oil frequently enough. Some require you to change oil as if it was extreme duty or like taxi cabs and police vehicles and you will have to show proof of that. Every 5000km or 3000miles is not often enough. When you get into the fine print certain parts are not covered under the full warranty of the drive line as was my full coverage extended warranty which specifically mention camshaft and lifter replacement. Hope yours was a better warranty than mine.

Check out Uncle Tony's Garage video on the Gen 3 hemi cam failures explained. Lack of lubrication at low rpms because of the distance between the cam and the crankshaft, as well as the shallow lifter angle and positioning of the lifters means all the oil at the top of the motor goes straight to the oil pan, not the cam.. Don't let it idle around. I have a 2012 ram with 105k on it, waiting for it to chuck a cam. After seeing the video, for sure won't be using the remote start feature ever again.

First, I swapped out the coil packs to eliminate the possibility. Then I swapped out, spark plugs. Then I swapped out fuel injectors. At that point if you’re still getting a misfire on the same cylinder it’s pretty certain that it’s a lifter or the camshaft. If the lifter goes bad, it usually wipes out the camshaft. Are you getting a misfire code?

Ever since I bought it when it had 200,000, I installed the Prolong engine treatment and raised the base idle with a Diablo tuner. Whatever you do, don't idle for too long too often. I've done my research and that's what the problem with the Hemi is. Crankshaft doesn't throw enough oil onto the camshaft and lifter when idling, which in turn cause the knocking over time. Like you said, it doesn't happen when driving because the crankshaft at higher RPMs lubricates the cam and lifters. Edit: I just re-read your comment, what is that you say about Raising the base idle? I'm not too mechanically inclined but like asking questions lol

Not a problem. I wish I had filmed it. First make sure the cam is at top dead center. The key to doing this is to not lose tension on the bottom. Next you remove the chain tensioner. Then you remove the top bolt of the chain guid. (You can’t access the bottom bolt because it’s behind the oil pump). DON’T LOSE TENSION ON THE BOTTOM GEAR HERE. move the guid to the side a bit now. You should have enough room to get it off the top gear now. Two new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, timing chain cover gasket, water pump gasket, camshaft, lifters, and I ended up needing to replace one ever so slightly bend lifter rod ($4). The rod that was bent was unsurprisingly from the same lifter that went bad. One other thing you may end up needing to get would be exhaust manifold gaskets and new exhaust manifold bolts. I did my best to keep them attached to the heads when I removed them. The bolts that hold on the exhaust manifolds are quite often already snapped. That is why most people who have a HEMI Hear the “HEMI Tick” until the engine warms up and expands the exhaust manifold enough to seal the leak.

I have been finding it incredibly hard to get an accurate number. There are a lot of people on many forms and other social media talking about this. The problem isn’t with just the ram trucks. It’s also in the jeeps and dodge vehicles. In my opinion it goes a lot further than just lack of oil changes. This particular problem happens most often in the hemi engine. Hemi owners aren’t the only ones who are guilty of going too long without changing the oil. With all of that being said, you are right. There are an awful lot of these vehicles on the road. So with that in mind the failure rate is probably at an “acceptable level” as far as the manufacture is concerned.

Technically no you do not need to put the engine at top dead center so long as you mark the location of the camshaft and the driveshaft on the timing chain and reinstall all in the same position. Good luck with yours.

Great video and information. ? Does this occur with low mileage say 66000 2015 Dodge Durango RT. I bought it with 4 miles now I got a misfire on cylinder 3 I changed all the spark plugs and coils and fuel injector to cylinder 3 and still a misfire I looked good at the wires and rats are the wires I repaired it and still check engine light. Not sure what to do next any help would be appreciated thank you....

Unfortunately, this problem can happen very low miles. Did you clear the engine codes and then the misfire came back?

@@josemontalvo4203 sounds exactly like my truck. I would say it is the camshaft. I suppose the next thing you could do is remove the valve cover and turn the engine over to see if the number three lifter is lifting all the way.

Excessive idle is the main cause of this. A few hundred hours of idle and 5k mile oil change means your oil was toast well before hitting 5k

I’ve heard the theory. But that’s definitely not the case here. This truck doesn’t idle that much, not even close. I’ve never been one for wasting gas. 😂

Never can show actual proof with this anti idling propaganda. All 5.7s with this system faced it

Thanks for this detailed video makes me feel like I don’t want to spend the time to do it myself. Did you put a stock one back in or aftermarket? If aftermarket which did you go with?

Since the engine is torn down wouldn’t it be best to go ahead and put a new timing chain and guides in as well

That is something that weighed in the back of my mind for months after the project. If I were to do it again yes I would probably change them out. The reason I didn’t do it, however is because I didn’t wanna have to remove the oil pan and the oil pump to remove the timing chain. With all that being said, I got Lucky. The truck has 212,000 miles on it today. I don’t wanna jinx anything but it’s still running fine. Thanks for watching!
