I just had my lifters and camshaft replaced in my 2012 Dodge Ram. 96k and oil changes since new every 3k. I had MDS disabled also. This truck runs like a dream now. Full time 8.

I am surprised at how many issues these otherwise pretty good engines have. Thanks for watching!

This is most common in fleet vehicles. Excessive idling wears out the oil before 5k oil change. Most ppl don’t realize or read the owners manual where it states such information

This is great information. Many ppl dont even put the correct grade oil in and in the manual is specifies the exact oil needed.

I have a 2012 160,000 miles.. Check engine light misfire #3. I replaced all coilpacks and sparkplugs. Drove 60 miles. Went from 18mpg to 22 mpg. Next day drove 50 miles parked an hour when I started again to leave, check engine light. Same code. I researched and found out about the hemi cam problems. Asked a local shop if they would do cam and lifters. They wanted to diagnose it first. They said need new engine $10,000. So I called another local shoo asked if they would do cam and lifters. He pulled the valve cover and confirmed flat lob #3 But doesn't want to do cam and lifters wants to sell me a new engine. I'm disabled or I would do the damn thing myself. Just have a question. I've seen a lot of KZbin videos of this cam and lifters change. How long are these vehicles running after the cam job. I'm trying to decide what to do.
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
Yes, Those engines are very expensive! Even used ones. They have more issues than just cam lobes. The heads drop valve seats, the valves tulip, exhaust bolts snap and then manifolds leak. The good news though is the new camshafts are made of a better material so last way longer. You MUST run the correct weight and spec oil Dodge calls for or the lifters will not operate correctly. If you want a sure fire way of making the engine last, Eliminate the MDS system and put a full set of regular lifters. Hope this helps.
@Timmy-mw6fp2 жыл бұрын
@@willpoweredgarage969 I've heard it suggested that you upgrade the oil pump (Hellcat or Melling depending on year) to increase the oil pressure at idle. Hellcat pump has a wider impeller providing more flow. Reignited did a whole KZbin series on it. I'm doing that while I'm there. Little more work, but hopefully actually fixes the issue.
@dustykramer37962 жыл бұрын
Metallurgical tests HAVE NOT confirmed any issues with the camshaft, in fact the several that have been done indicate industry standard hardness. The problem is the rollers on the lifters locking up and dragging over the cam lobe. There are lots of theories on why this occurs, including excessive idle hours, insufficient oiling of the lifter roller and needle bearings, incorrect oil usage, and defective lifter assemblies. Customer maintenance as a source cannot be eliminated as many use the incorrect motor oil or oil change interval (fleet). Unconfirmed sources have stated, apparently, that lifters used from 2011-2014 were from one particular supplier, and these are the year's most affected. There was a change to the diameter of the needle bearings and a different supplier cut-in mid-2014.

@@Timmy-mw6fp Well I ended up buying a brand new factory hemi. I asked my mechanics about putting the hellcat oil pump in it but he said it would void my warranty. I have about 1400 miles on it now. Oil pressure runs 52-54psi @ hiway speeds and upper 30's at startup and idle so far. I drove it from Idaho to Texas a couple years ago averaged 19.6 mpg on the trip. I made same trip 2 days after new engine was installed and only got 17.8 mpg. Did my 1st oil change down here at families for Thanksgiving. I guess I'll see how it goes this time. Last engine lost lobe on #3 @ 150,000 miles. I use mobile one 5-20 full synthetic but I was not the original owner. I'm so fricken discouraged by my disability. All it needed was cam and lifters but no mechanic would do that. They all think it just had to have a new engine. I stopped by and pulled the pil control valve after mechanic had old engine out. Not a speck of metal nor silver coloration there

What parts do you recommend. Starting project tomorrow. 2012 Ram 1500 big horn 2wd w/ mds Need guidance on parts ? What should i order Besides cam an lifters. What manufacturer?
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your budget. I have used both factory and ebay parts on these. I for one like to stick with factory mopar parts since they will have the most up to date revisions on the parts. One thing to look out for is make sure you get the correct camshaft. There are several variations and jurnal diameters. Besides that, you will need a head gasket set and timing cover and water pump gaskets. If you have any other questions, please ask.

I have a noise in my 04 that I cannot diagnose sounds like a squeak noise almost like a belt but running without the belt noise is still there it is getting louder with each start I wish I could post it here no one has heard it before.
@willpoweredgarage9693 жыл бұрын
Is it still making a squeak noise with the belt completely removed? Is the noise coming from the front of the motor? Can you at least narrow down the location of the noise?
@tomsawyer31373 жыл бұрын
@@willpoweredgarage969 I am showing the video with the belt removed the noise is more prominent in the left bank center of engine. With my stethoscope can here it more through the intake and it is getting worse wth every start.

It's a big job, The best I can suggest is get a quality cam and lifter. Do not cheap out. Also, when finished make sure you run the correct weight oil and change it on time. Other than that, just take pictures while you are removing stuff so you know where it goes, and make sure everything is cleaned very well.

how do you tell what type of thread your fan has? is it specific to each motor year and type? thanks! also, where are you located?
@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
Are you asking how do I tell if it's left hand thread or right hand? Or the actual thread size? Most clutch fans are left hand thread, but not all. They are hard enough to get off without tighten them more. So I suggest checking the manual before you try. Unless you can see a few threads, there is no easy way to tell.

@willpoweredgarage9692 жыл бұрын
There are a few kits out there from good vendors. I dont have anyone in particular I use. I do , however, make sure it is at least a high-quality one to prevent future failures. Also, oil type and quality are very important in these engines. Thanks for watching.

I too am looking for a good kit. What one did you use in this video?
@cliffroberts17743 жыл бұрын
Would this eliminate the tick?
@willpoweredgarage9693 жыл бұрын
So hemi engines are notorious for two sources of the "tick" . One is the exhaust bolts begin to snap. The exhaust starts to leak causing a tick sound that usually goes away when the manifolds warm and expand. Eventually though it will break more bolts and leak constantly. The other tick is as this video shows, failed lifters and cam. The clearance becomes too great and a tick or tap results.
