Well I wish that it was going to be just a coil pack but who am I kidding? It’s 2020! The Dodge HEMI 5.7 valve lifters and the camshaft seem to be failing all over the place. Just look at KZbin. Chrysler must know about this. I can’t imagine what it would cost to recall the lifters in all the cars and trucks out there. It really is too bad that there are a lot of people out there, myself included, that are going out and buying vehicles that have just a slight tick in the engine. In my opinion that slight tick is the beginning of an expensive repair. I love getting my hands dirty fixing things. I love the challenge of figuring things out. I also love the fact that there are so many great KZbinrs out there that we can rely on to help us out when we get stuck! I know that I made a lot of references to KZbin while working on this project! I wish you the best of luck in all your projects and thanks for watching!
Just in case you watch things out of order here is a link to part one. 😁 • 5.7 HEMI Camshaft and ...

LOL....your video is like watching me tear my truck apart. Unreal....I'm doing the exact job on my 2013 RAM right now one month after you posted this video. My cam looks just like yours and is in the exact same condition on cylinder 4. Mine only has 88K miles. Makes me think there is something to the cam not getting sufficient oil supply like I've read about. Nice job . I'm waiting on back ordered lifters before I can put mine back together.

😂 thanks. that’s awesome! I think you may be right. The hemi is a great engine but it seams to be unforgiving if you are a minute late with the oil change 😆. If you have the time, the one thing I wished I’d done was change out the exhaust manifold bolts. I have developed a slight leak that seams to go away after it heats up. Maybe that will be a future video if it gets worse. Be safe and Good luck with yours!

@@powers1776reset Well, i always used to put my new ones in a coffee can with enough new clean oil of the type run in the engine and left like that over night before assembly. I put a hellcat oil pump while replacing my cam and lifters. On the Ram trucks the pickup tube screen is to the back of the pan and bolted underneath the engine so I had to drop my pan to replace the oil pump. Huge pain in the ass . Had to drop the front differential. Jacking the engine wouldn't give me enough room to drop the pan.

I have 224k on my 2016 and am getting the misfire #2 cylinder code as well as a recent tick., Replaced the coil but the code came back. Fortunately, I purchased the lifetime warranty so it will be going to a dealership for repairs. Not the dealership I bought the truck from though. The last time I took it to them they tried to say I needed a wheel speed sensor and ABS module which are covered but claimed they weren't covered because the ABS wiring in the bumper was damaged and wanted $1300 to fix it. I said don't do anything I'm coming to get the truck. He said don't you want it fixed? I said yes but the ABS wiring doesn't go through the bumper so I know your lying. I picked up the truck and the codes had been cleared and never came back. That was 80,000 miles ago.

I've got a very rare liver lung disease called alpha one antitrypsin deficiency disease, and need a lung transplant. In my small town, Mountain Home Idaho, I couldn't find a shop that would change my cam and lifters, they all wanted to do a new engine. Frustrating as heck because I was getting 16mpg in town and on freeway at 80mph. 18-19mpg at 55-60mph. I got an average of 19.6 on a trip to Texas. I got the misfire code on #3 changed coil packs and plugs, made a 60 mile round trip at 55mph and my milage went up to 21.9. Next day drove 60 miles onr way at 80 mph, got 18.5 mpg. Parked 2 hours fired it up, check engine light came back on. Misfire #3. Started researching and found all these cam issues. If my health was better I would have changed the cam and lifters myself. I ended up buying a brand new factory hemi with 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty installed for $9000. My gas mileage is 12-13 at 80mph and around town. I made the same Texas trip and averaged 18.5. Really disappointing because I know all I needed was cam and lifters. I stopped by after he got old engine out and I pulled the oil control valve, spotless, not a speck of metal or silver anywhere.

I agree it may have seemed like I was close to that crank seal but I was actually miles away. It would’ve required the removal of the oil pan which was absolutely no easy task given the frame holding the engine would have to be removed and also the oil pump. At that point the timing chain would’ve come off. However I do look at the project and say “ I wish I changed the timing chain, oil pump and crank seal “ but then I justify it by saying I was still miles away from getting to them. It is the battle I have in my mind constantly.😂 Anyway it’s still running strong 50,000 miles later. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.😉

During MDS operation the same four cylinders are always shut down. They are 1, 4, 6, and 7. My ram has 120k but I always bypass the mds. On the 8 speed transmissions using the gear selectors on the steering wheel disables the mds. All I do is before I drive while the truck is in drive press gear - once then gear + until 8, the trans will shift normal as well.

Apparently that will cause your lifters to prematurely fail. Mine just did it and blew the motor at 133k miles. Rebuilding it now lol. When you have MDS off, the solenoid fucking blocks the flow of oil to your Non MDS lifters, it’s the stupidest shit ever! There’s a few videos on it.. Chrysler literally designed the engine to become less lubricated unless MDS is left alone / ON. So don’t turn your MDS off until you do an MDS delete with the solenoid delete. Then you can feel safe.

Hope you cleaned your block out. All that metal shavings everywhere. Most people just get a rebuilt engine. But there's a design flaw in the block. It's that tube that's between the crank and cam. Doesn't allow oil to properly lube the lifters. Especially If you're idling a lot. So no matter what. It's going to happen again.
@fieromike1
@fieromike1 7 ай бұрын
Nope I didn’t clean the block out. Almost 4 years later and The truck has an additional hundred thousand miles since the camshaft was changed. The.” design flaw.” that you’re referring to is the crankshaft not slinging oil up to the top. The real flaw is in the needle bearings on the lifters. Chrysler now has a new distributor for the part so hopefully they’ve been properly case hardened. Remember, this only happens to less than 4% of the 5.7s. I think that a “no matter what it’s going to happen again”!statement is kind of bold.

#132,000 miles - #5 misfire. Dealer wanted $11,000 to repair this telling me I needed a new head and exhaust manifolds on top of the cam and lifters. I told them to go pound salt - I'll do it myself. Get a new oil pump if you're going to go through the trouble of this repair, the stock oil pumps drop below 15 psi at idle and don't supply enough oil to the lifters, so you'll have this happen again if you don't. Melling makes an aftermarket pump that performs like a gen 4 pump. The oil pump from the 6.1 of this model year also fits, so that's an option as well. Either way, if you want your repair to last, you will need a new oil pump as well. Cheers.

@@fieromike1 I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi with 119,995 miles that now has a Cyl 5 Misfire code. After replacing the plugs, boots and coil pack the light has come back on. It does have a slight tick but after clearing the code the light had stayed out after replacing the plugs and boots. Until we were towing the racecar home in the rain and it started to buck. We pulled over shut off the engine and waited. It drove okay the rest of the way home. We replaced the coil. The light was out while idling at home. Took it for a test drive and now it's back on. So I believe we are looking at the same repair. My Question is this: the dealer is saying that if the metal shavings have reached the oil control valve that we will be chasing metal forever and should just install a remanufactured engine. That's a $4500 job. I'm kind of afraid to tear it down to see and am not sure I want to replace the cam and lifters if I'm going to have to keep chasing more issues caused from metal from the first failure. That's a lot of tear down to confirm the amount of damage. Also, I have no way to haul the racecar to my last race this weekend. I'm bummed!

From what I've learned. If there is shavings present in the 6.2 or 6.4 that mopar calls for engine replacement. Other then that you would see the shavings going this deep into the engine and make sure to atleast drop the oil pan and clean it out. Don't think it's going to kill it.

@fieromike1
@fieromike1 2 жыл бұрын
😂 I would have to say that the hardest part of the project was removing the harmonic balancing pulley. I had to modify the puller that I had and use bolts and nuts instead of the forks that you normally use. I am a carpenter by trade but I love working on cars. With that being said I suppose simply having enough guts to do it to begin with was kind of hard. I did not have the heads machined in a shop so the anxiety that I might be screwing the whole thing up definitely didn’t help much. I was always in contact with a good friend of mine who is a excellent mechanic so his advice as I went on was definitely useful. With that being said, I showed him the camshaft after it was removed and he was not concerned that metal shavings would be an issue. He said if it was three or four lobes that were messed up he would begin to wonder. I also keep a magnet on the end of my oil drain plug and it wasn’t showing signs of an absolutely horrible situation.

Well I can totally relate to a slight feeling of anxiety when taking on a project that’s new and slightly outside of your comfort level. This was the first time I dealt with timing, cam and lifters myself. I am a carpenter by trade but I’ve always liked working on cars. I did a lot of research on KZbin and I was also Constantly calling a mechanic friend of mine that Has been working on my car since I was 16 years old. I replaced all the parts with Chrysler parts from the dealership. That was for two reasons. First I wanted to make sure I was getting the right parts. Second I was insured that if any of the replacement parts caused a failure Chrysler would guarantee the engine. That wouldn’t be the case if I used aftermarket. My biggest fear in the whole project it is that I would get stuck halfway through and have to have the whole thing towed to my mechanic. Instead I just kept taking breaks and watching KZbin. 😂 To be honest though there wasn’t anything incredibly difficult about the whole thing. I did not have the heads sent out to be refinished they were still very flat and in good condition. As far as the timing goes, I just kept tension on the chain and the crankshaft timing gear the entire time after I had set the engine at top dead center and then I just reassembled everything and cross my fingers. From start to finish including all the KZbin breaks and phone calls, l started on a Friday evening and finished at about 11 PM the following Tuesday night It’s been almost one year and the truck is still running beautifully. I’m sure if you set your mind to it you’ll be able to get it done. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask, and good luck with your project!

I got all the parts that I used from the dealership because I wanted to ensure that I was getting what was intended for the truck. I was also told by them that they are now using a “new vender”for the lifters. I hope that it makes a difference. It cost about $1800. I’m sure I could have got them cheaper but I was willing to pay for the peace of mind that I was getting the rite parts. Two new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, timing chain cover gasket, water pump gasket, camshaft, lifters, and I ended up needing to replace one ever so slightly bend lifter rod ($4). The rod that was bent was unsurprisingly from the same lifter that went bad. One other thing you may end up needing to get would be exhaust manifold gaskets and new exhaust manifold bolts. I did my best to keep them attached to the heads when I removed them. The bolts that hold on the exhaust manifolds are quite often already snapped. That is why most people who have a HEMI Hear the “HEMI Tick” until the engine warms up and expands the exhaust manifold enough to seal the leak. It took about 25 to 30 hours of labor. I suppose that includes stopping to look up things on KZbin. Thank god we have KZbin! I am a carpenter by trade so this was a challenging project but a welcomed change of scenery. Good luck with yours.😉

It took about 25 to 30 hours of labor. I suppose that includes stopping to look up things on KZbin. Thank god we have KZbin! I am a carpenter by trade so this was a challenging project but a welcomed change of scenery.

I just did the same job on my 09 Charger RT, took my time, about 2 weeks it took me, couple of back aches and cursing but got it done. Also changed my alternator, radiator and A/C condenser, exhaust manifold gaskets as well. I started it and lifters still ticking, then my crankshaft sensor went bad.. So now I'm in a pickle cause I gotta unbolt the starter to take the sensor out....smh....Kept my old camshaft as a trophy, lobe on Cylinder #6 took the bite, literally

😮Sounds like you did a pretty big job! Persistence pays off! I don’t know how long you’ve run it, but the engine will sound fairly tickey after the first start for about five minutes or so. And if you actually do need a crankshaft sensor, that should be a piece a cake compared to what you just did! Don’t give up it will run again. Thanks for the comments and please subscribe. 😉

 @fieromike Yeah the ticking went away. Now I had a couple of issues with the camshaft sensor going bad, had a misfire but that was because the intake pushrod wasnt fully seated, fix that issue, now it still wont turn over because the oil pressure sensor is bad. Hopefully fixing it will allow the car to work properly. These sensors are a headache, not to mention dealerships nationwide have been on backorder on sensors. Thankfully Ebay has helped, but time frame in completing this project is now been 2 months. So yeah I'm patiently waiting for this to be over so I can finally drive my car again...

Thanks. 😉 I went with stock and I got it from the dealer. I think it was though lifters that wiped out the Lobe and the mechanic at the dealer agrees. They tell me that they have a new supplier for them now so the needle bearings shouldn’t be seizing and wiping out the cam Any more. They also told me that if I used their parts and any of them failed they would replace the engine. If I went with aftermarket parts and something failed that would be all on me. I think it’s funny because it was all their parts the first time when it failed and they wanted nothing to do with it! 😂

Would replacing with a new engine be advised so it wouldn’t just be happening all over again down the road?
@fieromike1
@fieromike1 9 ай бұрын
It depends on how many miles you have on your engine right now. Theoretically, the same thing could happen to a new engine. Also, Chrysler says that they’re getting these parts from a new supplier which means that they’ve fixed the week bearings that are causing the problem with the lifters. As far as Main goes, I got 100,000 miles on the engine since the replacement. Changing the entire engine definitely three times as expensive.

Yup I used all the same parts. Got them from the dealership. They said the entire engine would be guaranteed if One of their parts failed. If I used after market parts or altered the design I would be on my own. I spent more on parts but the peace of mind is worth it to me. The one selling point to me is that they are using a new distributor for the lifters now. Only time will tell. Maybe I’ll be doing another video in the future. 😂

Old comment, but ill bite. MOST of the camshaft replacements I have done, the lifters that fail are the NON AFM lifters. MY hypothesis is they receive less oil flow in comparison to the AFM lifters.

Wow sorry to hear that. I got everything from the dealership. I would say that the most important thing to get from the dealership is the lifters. About one month after I did everything you have done mine started to tick. Taking the valve cover off I’m watching the rockers after you rotate the engine with the starter is a sure way to see if it is the camshaft. However I was 81 1/2% certain it was the camshaft before that. 100% certain after I took the camshaft out. 😉

Nice work. I missed what year your truck is but No. 4 is an MDS cylinder. No surprise there, eh? On my 08 5.7L Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee it's no 7 that is showing a tick with the stethoscope. Trying to decide what to do...
@fieromike1
@fieromike1 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a 2011. Are you getting a misfire code? If so have you tried swapping the coil pack fuel injector and plugs with another cylinder to see if the trouble code migrates to another cylinder? However if you are getting a definite tick from a specific cylinder you may have already identified It. Swapping out the coil packs is fairly simple though.

@@fieromike1 thanks for the reply! No misfire codes yet so it could be early in the lifter damage cycle. I could run an exhaust leak check to confirm that's not it, but I'm pretty sure what I'm hearing is mechanical and not exhaust.

No it definitely sounded like a tick in the valve cover. If you are hearing a tick that sounds like an exhaust leak your ears are most likely not deceiving you. These engines are notorious for breaking the rear bolts on the exhaust manifolds. That is actually going to be my next big project.

Thanks. I ended up keeping the manifolds on the heads. It was a bit heavier but their were less bolts to mess around with.
