This vehicle took many hours to repair, and the filming and editing also took many hours. My goal was to create a start-to-finish video in which I could document every step of this repair while also maintaining a reasonable length video. Therefore, I do not expound in detail on every step, but instead decided to take an overview approach. That way, someone who is interested in this type of repair can see what is involved and how to fix it without becoming overly bored and having to watch hours of multi-part videos. EXTRA NOTE: The truck here is two-wheel drive. If your truck happens to be 4x4, you’ll have a few extra steps to remove the oil pan. You’ll either have to drop the front axle or undo the motor mounts and raise the engine. In some cases, it may be easier to remove the engine entirely. Keep this in mind before starting the job!

Just ripped my engine apart a month ago and replaced lifters, camshaft, oil pump to hellcat pump, timing chain kit, oil pan pickup tube, oil pan gaskets, all other gaskets, spark plugs, serpentine belt, etc. My truck now runs quiet like it's a brand new truck. People just need to take their time and triple check everything. The job is only hard if you make it that way

I'm about to tackle this job on my 2007. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but have a question. After finding top dead center....installing cam...lifters....putting heads back on...pushrods....etc..do you need to turn the engine manually by hand before starting it with the key to make sure there are no issues? If so, here is my question....by doing so this does it mess with your timing, or is your timing still good since you already found it earlier Thank anyone for some help!

@@cameronlujan9320 First off never done this job. Other videos I’ve watched if I remember right, showed there are marks on the chain, sprocket, and block to line up. Also showed in moving it manually. The other made it seem like not a big deal getting it lined up. Take this for what it is and just keep searching youtube for other videos. 10/10 I just completed this job on my truck, I have zero mechanical experience and I've never done any type of motor work to this degree. I referenced this video from the first step all the way to firing it up for the first time. The only thing I did different was instal non mds lifters and removed and plugged the solenoids. Fantastic video, great job. I had a 2013 Ram 1500 4x4, 5.7 and loved the truck, I had a very small Hemi tick since it was new, however I never had any issues. I changed the oil/filter every 3k - 3500 miles.. used the 5w-20 and MOPAR filter, sometimes I would use 5 quarts of 5w-20 and 2 quarts of 5w-30 mixed.. I sold that beautiful truck with 30k miles, no issues ever with anything, mine had the 6 speed auto.

Thank you so much for this video. Referencing your video repeatedly, among others, I managed to get this done on my 2011 Ram 1500 4x4. Some notes for others who might be forced into this DIY position due to cost. If you have a 4x4, its way harder to get this done. You have to move the front differential, and the 2 drivers side bolts probably took me an entire day just to figure out how to get off. I did this in a small carport without the ability to use jackstands since the ceiling was so low. So it can be done with patience, swearing, and future terrible mood. Since you have to basically take the whole thing apart anyways, I decided to change valve springs/seats/retainers/seals. I also changed the water pump, and deleted the MDS, and installed a new high volume oil pump. Also got new pushrods, head bolts. Basically went all out so my 160k mile truck would be as close to new as possible under the hood. I can't find it, but there was a recent report showing the MDS solenoids block a lot of oil from getting to the camshaft and lifters. That is why I went with the MDS delete. Once again, thanks for this. I had no mechanical experience at all, other than changing oil and batteries. I'm still not a mechanic...but I know a lot more about engines now, thats for sure. Any of you others out there, you can do it, just take your time. Trust me, if you try to complete this in a few days with no experience, you are just setting yourself up for failure.

Breaking down the Hemi right now, This video is very helpful. There is a drain plug on the bottom left side of the radiator. I found this way easier then pulling bottom hoses and taking a bath in anti freeze.

I just started helping my neighbor with this fix and no where in the title of you video do you say that this is only for a 2 wheel drive truck. In order to get the oil pan off on a 4 wheel drive dodge/ram truck you have to either lift the entire engine out to remove the oil pan or you have to disassemble the passenger side of the front axle in order to get the pan off. I simply wish that you either re-title this video or at the least make a disclaimer that this only applies to a 2x4 dodge/ram truck. As a humble home mechanic I truly appreciate this video because this helped us immensely... other than the headache we now have encountered midway through the job which is to remove half of the front axle, we're gonna keep on following your advice because you did a great job in this video... other than that disclaimer lol. My 2013 crew cab sport with 150k engine light came on. Misfire cylinder 6. Put new spark plugs. Swapped the coils. Cleaned injectors. And I’m still misfiring when I punch it. Idles fine. No crazy lifter tick. But after watching this video I’m going to pull the trigger on a cam swap along with upgraded lifters. Great video man. Very thorough and straight to the point.

Pull off the passenger side valve cover and crank the engine over while holding the gas pedal all the way down (that way the engine doesn’t start). Have someone crank the engine like that and watch the valves on cylinder 6 and I bet you’ll find one valve that moves less than the other ones. That’s how you know. I have another video on my channel where I do that if you want to see.

I'm having issues with a truck I bought my son. Guy said all it needed was a valve cover gasket and a TPS. Well not even close too whats really wrong with the truck. He changed the cam shaft himself but the truck is leaking everywhere even in the main seal. Bolts are broke inside the oil pan. Water pump is leaking. It just gets worse. Man I wish I can hire this guy. He is amazing. You can even hear it in his voice he really enjoys doing this. Please help me.

Great info in video, im doing my cam lifters timing oil and water on my 2014 5.7 hemi with 74000mi and from what i read is normal worst thing for me was getting the har balancer off lifters seemed fine but going to replace them and a couple of bent push rods so far ill have cam out tomorrow hopefully lol

I’m working on a 2015 4x4. The oil pan doesn’t come out without removing motor mount bolts and raising the engine or dropping the front differential. However, if there’s not a lot of sediment, there are ways to disconnect the pickup tube from the oil pump without completely removing the oil pan all of the way. There are a couple KZbin videos about that.

Ok, if I couldn't mistaken, the difference between the lifters are because the jammed one is a regular one and the other is the meds kind, look the same but they aren't. In other words the damaged ones are the regular that means the meds help some way prevent more damaged.

Yes, when I removed the oil pan, I was following the OEM procedure for camshaft replacement. You’re supposed to remove the pan to remove the pick up tube and oil pump. I know some people try to take short cuts, but you really should remove the pan to at least clean out any metal shaving that are sitting at the bottom. On a 2wd truck, it’s not that much more work to remove the pan. On a 4wd truck, it’s kind of a pain but I would still do it.

As long as you buy the new lifters with larger needle bearings and are meticulous with oil changes , use a good synthetic oil in 0w40 or 5w40, and don't idle your vehicle needlessly , you will have a reliable powerplant.

thank you for the video. after viewing it for 30 times lol I worked on my 2014 1500 ram 5.7 . I followed your video step by step when I got it back together I was nervous when I first started up cause it ran rough but after 10 minutes it started to run smooth. I doubled and triple checked myself by referring to your video. thank you. the only issue is that my battery lite is now on it wasn't before I replaced the alternator and the battery but it still on I checked all connections but I still can't find the issue the old ones where good but I changed them anyways. if anybody has any idea please share. thank you for this great video

May be a bad ground connection. Double check the grounds at the back of the cylinder heads. Also make sure the serpentine belt is installed properly so that the alternator isn’t spinning backwards lol.

Did the same to my 2013 dodge charger and one of my lifters roller broke completely and stuck down and chewed a lobe off on my cam shaft. Needless to say it was a prettty bad misfire. Replace with aftermarket cam, lifters and everything in between. After oil pan dropped we found the broke pieces of the lifter. 205k miles so far and running great. Did the repairs at 95k. Definitely worth changing out those bad lifters with an upgrade. Dodge didn’t make good lifters on those gens.

ASE question. You remove the ground side of the battery first. He removed the positive first. Anything metal gets caught between the positive terminal and ground. It will blow up.

The 90’ head bolt suggestion. Use paper tape on the socket. Make a 4 lines divide in 4. Each line is 90’. When you put the socket on Reference one line Then turn your bolt 1/4 turn to the next line. Why 4 lines. You have more area to pick your reference line in the head.

This was a good video that had some nice tips but it could have been a great video (IMO) if you did not skip over much of the actual wrenching portions that you could have tipped viewers on as far as removing clips/connectors/ratchet - extension(s) or wrench/ getting the heads off & on/ a better view and demo how you pinned the tension on the timing chain to remove it and the gears, do you recommend all oem parts (even gaskets) or were some aftermarket etc etc. I know it is routine for you but most people that come to watch the video it will be their first time doing the job. Ty for what you did show however, it will definitely be a big help.

What cam did you use in the video or would you personally use or recomend? I see some forums guys are recomending comp cam, melling double roller chain, and melling HV oil pump, factory lifters

doing my 5.7 now, what a bitch to do. Mis fire cylinder 3, its actually easier than it looks just time consuming. Lifter in cylinder 3 completely snapped the roller bearing apart. Now have to tear about the lower part of the engine to find the broken piece before it cause more damage. Been taking my time removing everything, chemical wash all the parts air dry on racks before I start putting it all back together. Video helped before taking everything apart. now have a garage full of parts spread out every where lol After learning this new skill, I think I can keep this truck running up to a million miles haha

thank you for posting this. I'll be replacing a few things on mine. I'm going with shorties and a bigger throttle body, stock cam but I'm doing away with the mds system. any advise?

Getting rid of the MDS is a good idea. My advice would be to take your time. Don’t get in a rush. Make sure all the important bolts are torqued.

Don't do shorties, waste of time and money for no gains. Longtubes are the deal.
