I did get the "tick" early on but my dealer replaced the broken studs for "free" with a 300 dollar deductible. Somehow, we the people always get screwed. I complained about them telling me when I bought the truck that it had an unlimited power train warranty but they were gaffing me for something involved in the power train. His response was that anything "outside the block" was not power train. Oddly enough, very shortly after I made my initial comment, I was driving home from a GF's house one evening and the rear end locked up and the driveshaft snapped. Pretty gnarly event. My usual mechanic wanted nearly 4500-5K to repair with all new parts. Something about the rear end of 2009 and up being more expensive. Anyway, I called a buddy who works at a Dodge dealership parts counter and asked him for assistance in finding a lightly used rear end for my truck. He asked for the VIN and when I gave it he said, "Are you aware that there is a open recall on your truck for the pinion nut? Just tow it here and we'll fix everything for free." So I did. That was last September. Was very stoked to get a new rear end and drive shaft after 265K+ miles. They did recommend replacing the front wheel hubs as they were beat. I did that repair on my own with decent quality aftermarket hubs. Motor is still doing fine. I've performed every oil change on it, I use Valvoline full synthetic with one quart of Marvel substituted. Dumped one coil when accelerating hard one morning at @125K. Replaced it. No problems since then. I love my truck!

As a former dodge tech, I must correct you on the cam and lifters. It is not year specific, however I have found it to be mds specific.(to my knowledge the first gen 5.7s did not suffer from this issue. The only 5.7s I ever saw that had cam problems were police chargers and oil field work trucks. #1 cause of failure is extended periods of idle time. Idling for extended periods of time causes the roller on the tappet to seize, therefore making it slowly eat down into the cam lobe, effectively shortening valve travel, which in most cases shows up as a misfire. This is not something that happens over night. Typically found in cylinders 3,4,5 and sometimes 6. Some other things that you did not mention are that the early 5.7s were prone to idler pulley failures and water pump failures. Also, some newer generation 5.7s were plagued by bad timing chain guides. There is a recall for this. The timing chain and guides both get replaced. Some like to break exhaust manifold bolts, seems to depend on driving habits/conditions. Otherwise, good vid bud. 👍

Why does the roller not like idling?? Oil flow too low at idle?
@unburntfuel5974
@unburntfuel5974 6 жыл бұрын
lee hancock I guess it depends on who you ask really, but I believe they produce sufficient oil pressure, (ive never seen one that didnt carry excellent oil pressure) if not there would be problems showing up in the rest of the valve train. For instance the hydraulic tappets in the 5.7 are kind of finicky and want lots of pressure. Some people think it has something to do with the force the tappets are exerting on the roller, meaning at idle there is so much force being applied that over a long period of time idling it's just too much for the oil flow to handle, and some think it is to do with the extra resistance to the oil flow as the multiple displacement system is run on oil pressure. Either way I believe what happens is when the engine idles for an extended period of time, (and we're talking an like an hour or more at a time), oil pressure is diminished just enough right at the roller and nowhere else to cause enough heat build up between the roller and the cam lobe (for whichever reason it may be) that the oil that is making it there is not enough to overcome the heat. Therefore if the idle were raised to say 1000 or 1200 rpm when idling for a long time, I doint believe it would ever be an issue. If your worried about this happening to your engine, don't. As long as your daily routine doesn't involve letting it warm up for ridiculous amounts of time from dead cold, (which can cause a few other nasty problems over time), or letting it sit around and idle for hours on end, your fine. That, and the other big thing to remember with an mds hemi is to ALWAYS KEEP CLEAN OIL IN IT!!! So many people go 7,000, 10,000 miles or more between oil changes and then when the engine no longer can deactivate 4 cylinders on the highway from sludged up oil passages, somehow it's the engines fault... let's all keep in mind here that extended periods of idle time isn't good for any engine.

Unburnt Fuel Police Chargers getting new engines due to lifter roller failures at less then 100,000 km. even when using Mobil 1 synthetic oil at 5000 km. Interval. Still an issue with 2016 and 2017 models. 3.6 l is even worse, every Police cruiser needed multiple engine repairs before end of warranty so we stopped buying 3.6 l. It was very rare for a Ford 4.6 to have an engine problem other then a water pump.

benjaminwayneb Fortunatley for me I never had to have much interaction with the 3.6, so I'm no help there, but I've never replaced an engine for tappet roller seizure. I can certainly understand why, shavings introduced into the oil, but I've never had one come back with an issue. I also never had one that was ran for long once the customer noticed an issue. Clean oil multiple oil changes later, and nothing in the oil filters when cut open. Run them too long with a seized roller maybe?

I strongly believe its how you treat your engine, i always run the best oil, always keep up with maintenance, also i always give er plenty of time to warm up before i drive it. alot of people neglect to do all these things and bitch when the truck breaks down or has issues. so many negative people i talked to that knew nothing about trucks.. RAM this RAM that. 1 year later all the shit talkers with there 5.0s.. ECO BOOMS... Vortecs etc have been in the shop for recalls.. repairs.. not me.. i don't drive the shit out of mine. Yeah I agree! All brands have their own issues and there will always be that hardcore guy that has something to say about a different brand lol. Even some of the comments in here are funny. Yes there were some problems with the cam in some of the 5.7L engines but think about how many of these engines are out there. People only come to the internet to complain when they have a problem but not usually when they are running great so you have to take that into consideration when deciding if its an issue to be worried about. 👍

First of all, thank you for taking some of your time to make this video for many of us that are interested in this information. I'm in the process of buying a 2005 Dodge Ram with the 5.7 Hemi engine and because of your video you have given me confidence purchase this truck. The engine sounds so strong and it runs so evenly but your video has pushed me over the top. I own a 2001 Dodge Durango with the 4.7 v8 engine and I've owned it for 6 years and I have never even changed a spark plug in it. It runs so good set my 19 year old son has demanded I not get rid of it because he wants it. Again, thank you for making this video and taking your time because I truly believe time is a precious commodity that we never get back so this was time well spent. I wish you well you and your family.

Towing prevents the MDS from kicking in and although may have been hard could be responsible for saving your engine. Although other things can happen the MDS has been linked as the primary cause of lifter failure. In a nutshell when the MDS activates it diverts oil pressure to lockout the lifters and this pressurization cycle robs the still running lifters of oil pressure. This shouldn't affect performance but the problem is exacerbated by malfunctions in the mechanism (wear, breakage, bad sensors, etc.) I believe this affects all MDS engines 2006 - present. There are two ways to deactivate MDS without mods. 1) Turn on the tow/haul switch 2) Press the shifter up/down switch down one click so that a 6 appears on the instrument panel (or 8 if you have an 8 speed tranny) or if you have a center console shifter switch to manual. Whatever you have switch so that your highest gear number appears and the (ECO) light turns off. You will have to do this [every time] you shift the vehicle into drive. So as of the second half of 2019 FCA has fixed the problem (again), the jury is still out.

No rust anywhere and spent a hour looking the truck over before a test drive. I have put a few miles on it now and I am very happy with it. I have done mechanical work for the last 14 yrs so I figured anything that breaks I could fix. My first truck was a 68 f100 and then a 94 f250 that I had forever. I had a 2014 5.7 hemi sport that had over 100,000 kms on it and it was a fantastic truck. Liked it so much I traded it in for a brand new 2017 hemi sport 5.7 last year which I currently have now and thanks to the channel is getting modded out really nice. Keep up the good work man these videos are super helpful for guys who enjoy some affordable and clean modifications.

I just bought a 2017 Ram 1500 5.7 Limited, it has 113,200 miles on her and she still feels like a new truck, nice and tight with gobs of power. It even still looks like a new truck. It's delmonico red pearl coat, I love the Ram boxes to. I've had 7 Ram truck in my years from 1996, 1999, 2001, 2007, 2016, 2017 and 2019. I have NEVER had any problems with any of them. They have been REALLY GREAT trucks.

I had a 2015 tradesman ram 1500 5.7L v8, put fifty thousand miles on it in two and a half years. Ran like a top. Just traded it in in January this year for a liquidated 2017 1500 Big Horn brand new. I have 8000 miles in it so far and I'm totally in love with it. The ONLY issue I have is the Eco drive when it drops off to 4 cylinders, I just don't like how it feels. No different than the 2015. Still, my Ram is my work truck, I work in a sand mine and I drive 40 minutes one way to work. Really decent gas mileage considering its a v8.

@@dylkelley We just traded in a 2013 Ram 1500 Quad cab for a 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab but our 2013 Ram only had 28,000 miles on it. We just wanted a nice new one, the engine was perfectly fine and 28,000 is really low mileage and it honestly drove like a dream (we originally paid about $38,000 for it). The person who got that truck got a really great truck at a very good price, the dealer was asking around $25,000 for it when he put it on the lot (I later looked up the VIN #). We took excellent care of that truck cause my husband (who is in his 50's) is a real fanatic when it comes to his vehicles. He washed it all of the time and waxed it religiously and changed all of the fluids religiously and kept it spotless. Before the 2013, we had a Dodge Dakota pickup truck which was okay (I wasn't in love with it but husband used it for occasional work situations) but when they changed the model design we bought the 2013 Ram. When the 2019 came out we could just not resist how nice the new ones are so we traded in the 2013 Ram but we could have easily kept it another 5 years or more with no problem. We traded in our 2013 Ram at Route 18 Dodge in East Brunswick, NJ which is right on Route 18. (I am kind of mad because I felt like we should have kept it longer). Good luck getting a great vehicle. Try to buy one that the owner took great care of.

You can buy a tuner to disable the mds. There's also kit you can purchase to remove the solenoids and lifters. I had to replace one solenoid because the stealership said I had one bad (they wanted $950). I did it in a day for 30 bucks. I was having electrical issues because they tried drilling out the broken manifold bolts. They screwed the head up and had to put a new one on. In and out of shop for 2 months. I replaced plugs one day and saw that they had forgot to tighten down the ground wire from pcm. Which is probably why the coil pack and solenoid went out due to electrical issues of ground not being tightened. Haven't had any issues since other than that. (Knock on wood) 130,000 miles and still runs like the day I bought it.

If you want a long lasting Chrysler, maintain it very well. As a former Service Advisor who worked for Chrysler many years ago, Chrysler vehicles that are maintained very well, outlast the competition. The problem is that most Chrysler owners are clueless that they even they have to do an oil and oil filter change and then they wonder why their Chrysler breaks down.

BoostedMotorsports Agreed that there is some luck involved but that is just a small part of the pie. Luck is, when opportunity meets preparation. As an owner of many Chrysler vehicles since I got my license 30 years ago, the vast majority of the vehicles that me and my family have owned have been Chryslers. Due to the fact that we are meticulous when it comes to maintenance, our Chryslers have only given us many years of trouble free motoring. WHEN people start taking responsibility in their lives, that is when things work out for the better, although it may take awhile.

BoostedMotorsports, Hello, I am the original owner of a 2005 Dodge Power Wagon 3/4 ton with a 5.7 liter Hemi. I currently have over 150,000 miles (I'll let you do the km conversion). My truck looks and runs like the day I drove it off of the lot back in '05. It is an exceptional truck. I did have to change one cracked exhaust manifold, motor mounts and one battery. So again, exceptional truck. It's seen it's share of mud, sand and one meter deep water. Years ago I had a hand-me-down, full size Dodge van with a 318cc engine. I sold it with 215,000 thousand miles and it still ran great. My latest purchase was a new 2016 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack with a shaker hood and a 6.4 hemi. I have high hopes for it as well. Bottom line: Mopar or no car. Thank you for your video and your patience. Best regards, Robert

Mechanically my 2005 & 2008 were both great, I only got rid of them to trade up into nicer rams before 100k miles. My only complaint with them was the common rust area above the wheel wells on the bed. I am currently enjoying better mileage on the 2017 from the 8sp transmission that is netting me 20.1 mpg combined (80% highway, 20% city) which is up from 16mpg on the 2008. Hey man I love your channel, and I don’t know if you’ll still get a notification to this comment being that it’s 4 years old. But what I wanted to share is I have always been a Silverado guy , however I purchased my first Ram 2018 1500 CC RWD 5.7 Hemi exactly 15 months ago. The truck had 83K miles on it and I absolutely love everything about the truck. If I had any complaint at all it would only be I wish the truck had more braking power to stop. I’ve lowered it and I’ve done a lot of your modifications you’ve featured on this channel. I recently lowered it and purchased the Diablosport platinum tuner for it and it responded very well. Last week the truck rolled 100k miles and it displayed a fault code indicating misfire #8 cylinder it was also due a complete service. I purchased all new plugs and coils and the oil and filter for the oil change. When I pulled #8 plugs one (maybe both I can’t recall) plugs were tapped closed. So I couldn’t determine anything else damaged so I proceeded with gapping my new plugs and installed the rest, changed the oil and drove the truck for a couple of days without incident. After a couple hundred miles I pulled number 8 plugs out again to check if they were closed shut again however they were not in fact they were gapped at exactly .043 just like I gapped them a few days prior. So with all this being said my fiancé and I had a road trip planned to go to Charlotte NC from Charleston SC where we live. So for the trip I wanted to try out the MPG Booster tune pre installed with my Diablosport tuner, so fillled up with 87 , turned MDS on and my fiancé drove the next 2.25 hours to Charlotte without any issues and the truck averaging 24 MPG (interstate cruising speed of about 78 MPH @ 90 degrees F and the AC on blast). We got off the interstate and topped off with 93 so I put the 91 octane tune in the truck and switched drivers. Drove the truck approximately 2 miles from that gas station and got a fault code that number 8 misfired then as we went another mile it turned into multiple misfires, skipping, smoking (burning oil) knocking and raising hell with loss of power. So we finally limped it onto my brother in laws house about 10 miles from that gas station. Once we arrived and let the truck cool down I pulled number 8 plugs again with number 6, and number 1 just randomly checking all plugs were still set gapped as I set them. However on my Diablosport monitor I could see number 8 injector not firing constantly. And if the engine sat idle it would load up with oil and burn off a hell of a smoke cloud behind me so thick it was unbelievable. So I dumped the Royal purple 5w30 I had put in it earlier in the week and replaced it with the mobile one 5w20 I had been using prior to that particular oil servicing. So with work and adult lives we had to get back home and $1500 for a tow truck to carry my truck home , and Uhaul with NO car transporter nor dolly they said my truck would fit onto, I decided to try to limp it the 235 miles back home. So stopping to top off the oil every 30-40 miles and watching each cylinder (via injector pulse) on the monitor we dropped off cylinders 8,6,and 5 was shitting the bed when the truck finally just didn’t have anymore power to push itself up another hill about 90 miles from our home. Knocking at this point we arranged for an Uber home and sent for a wrecker to return my truck to my driveway (it should be home tomorrow) what do you suspect I am going to find when I tear this engine apart at just over 100K miles blown up under normal driving conditions? Any guesses, or suggestions? Did I mess up with the change of brand or viscosity oil during my oil change ? Why was number 8 plugs tapped closed, why were they gapped as they should be after I changed them? Any ideas would be helpful. I also would like to get your information on how to obtain one of your 80 mm throttle bodies for this same build or rebuild. Thanks in advance Rick Confused in Charleston

I bought my 2008 Jeep Commander brand new with the 5.7 Hemi. It now has 210,000 miles on it. Now problems at all except for broken manifold bolts, yet to be replaced. I have used it to also to tow a 24 foot RV trailer, with a Hensley hitch to provide a stable tow. I love the Hemi. I'm on here wondering how long it will last. I have never held onto a car beyond 140 thousand miles before, as they all start having issues. My jeep has had almost no issues all the way around. Great motor, great vehicle.

I have a 2013 5.7 Hemi Sport 4x4 I bought new with only 80,000 km on it so far. This is the longest I have ever owned a vehicle and was starting to get concerned about the mileage. I use to hall a 30’ travel trailer and now use it to plow my lane way, plus I do like the power of the Hemi and tend to drive it a bit hard at times. I had the exhaust manifold bolts done under warranty and the 2 front fenders replaced under warranty for rust bubbling and I keep it in mint condition. Aside from that, no issues and she’s fully loaded, I love this truck! Sounds like it’s a keeper.

I absolutely love my 2014 ram 1500 sport 5.7L Hemi, as you mentioned with the exhaust manifolds 4 of the original bolts had snapped on me. I just replaced the manifolds with BBK shorty headers and they seem to be doing well so far just a note when using the DEI exhaust wrap your truck will smoke quite a bit until the wrap sets completely. Stopped at the convenience store last night and I thought my truck was on fire! 😕

Thanks for posting! I recently purchased 2009 Ram 1500 with 127,000 miles on the 5.7 Hemi. It is refreshing to know the hemi is a good solid motor. I traded a 2003 Dodge Dakota which had 233,000 miles on a 4.7 Magnum motor and was still running strong. Only reason I traded it was the front end needed alot of work and it was just starting to rust around one of the wheel wells.

Regarding frequent manifold bolt replacement: wouldn’t a stainless steel stud vs bolt be a more logical choice for longevity? It would never rust or corrode plus have better elasticity properties.

Everyone complains about a ticking noise when the engine is cold then it still ticks, just not as loud. I've had friends take their 2005 5.7 to the shop to had lifters fixed and I've told 90 percent of them that it's not the lifters. The condensate tube from the ac drips into the hot manifolds, and BAM! Rusts the number 7 and 8 I think, manifold bolts right in half. Over time, I've replaced my broken manifold bolts with high quality bolts and the sound goes away. The ticking sound is just air being sucked in or blowing out I should say on each exhaust cycle. Any of you having that ticking noise, check your heat shield on manifolds. You'll find your very own broken bolts. 36 dollars at auto zone and about an hour and a half, and you've got a strong, smooth sounding Hemi again!

2014 Ram 1500 crew cab express...around 50,000 miles had to get the exhaust manifold bolts replaced. I live in an area where temperatures drop anywhere from 20-30 degrees from whatever it is during daytime. HEMIs run hot, so those bolts didn’t last long. I've run fleet vehicles for decades and a well maintained and used modern gasser will go as long as you want to keep it. Synthetic oil, oil analysis and bypass filtration is next level maintenance but the real secret is keeping the vehicle clean. If a vehicle is kept glossy your attitude towards it stays right.

Excellent engines, and believe it or not, one of the most economical V8s on the market (thanks 8HP, VVT, and MDS). There have been a small number of 5.7s out there with lifters that seize and eat into the cam, causing a very expensive repair. And first gens had valves that would pop loose and grenade the engine. Other than that, a VERY solid engine. With FCA installing them in Chargers, Challengers, RAM, Grand Cherokees, and Durangos, it has to be reliable.

@Boosted2k : not THAT small of an issue, I bought my 2013 used in Oct 2015 with 52k mi. I'm in the states. My truck is a Canadian manufactured. I bought an extended warranty thank God. Dodge America would not cover anything. My warranty co covered the cam lifter problem. Yep, my truck @ 69,900mi had the motor replaced. Started seeing all the misfire signs and then the terrible obvious tapping from a top end lifter knock. Dodge wanted to rebuild top-end my warranty company said hell no, and they found me a salvage motor with 19k mi. Took dealership 90days to sort it out between my warranty co and Dodge!!!! At any rate, I love the truck. It's a 1500 Quad Cab Express Tradesmen but no cargo boxes in the bed. It's got a nice deep bed, just over 6' it rides and drives very tight and I love that. Also really like the coil spring rear end. Ford's 150 just way too soft feeling for me in a truck. (I've rented them a lot) This Ram just feels and looks sporty. New motor now has 50k mi on it and 100k my on the truck & tranny. I cannot stand the 6spd 25yrd old trans!!! It is worthless. Well, 5th & 6th gear anyway. Unless you're on the flats, unloaded, with a tail wind, those gears are worthless. Truck has ECO too but it can't stay in ECO but for a second like downhill only! I don't understand why Ram did that. Redesign the Hemi and new trans for 2013 and throw some of your left over old shit in with the new motor!!!! I read that all the express models got the old 6spd trans. It revs up too high before shifting, shifts way too late and never shifts on time. It also can't handle the pressure the Hemi can out on it. Solenoids just release occasionally without shifting !!!! I can't wait to upgrade to a 2014 or newer. Your '14 Sport looks very sharp.

My 2010 Laramie with the hemi just turned over 183,000 miles. The only problems I've ever had was a fuel pump and finally last week a rear outer axle bearing went bad. However for the past couple of years I can hear some kind of a rattling sound in the engine while decelerating with the window down. The noise goes away if I put it into tow/haul mode effectively shutting off the MDS. I've heard it could be the timing chain or the rocker arms or the lifters but I've never bothered to fix it cuz it doesn't cause much of a problem it just makes a noise. Anybody have any ideas about this?
