A common error that plagues many reconstructions of Megalodon is that's depicted as basically just a bigger great white shark. This is because we used to think they were closely related, but more recent studies recover Megalodon as a member of the genus Otodus, which are lamniformes, but belong to their own family, otodontidae. Anatomically, Megalodon differed from the great white shark in having a more slender, elongated build and proportionately larger caudal and pectoral fins.

@@Serucipe You make two claims in this comment, both of which are wrong. While we don't have a complete skeleton for megalodon, we do have some vertrbrae in addition to the numerous teeth. Second, it could not have looked like anything, due to the requirements for macropredation and the constraints of hydrodynamics. We might not be sure about all of the details, but we have good understanding of the big picture.
@Erlik0_89

When you think about it, it makes sense tho. When people think of a big shark, they think of the biggest shark they know of (which is usually the great white). They then just upscale it because they think that both sharks serve the same niches.

Basilosaurus has a rather funny reason why it has such a name (meaning "King Lizard"). Because when it was found, they thought it was some kind of massive reptile. So it was labelled as such. But due to the rules of taxonomy, when it was later found to be a mammal instead...the name had to stick. If you screw up with naming an animal, your shame is permanent. Also surprised Dimetrodon didn't pop up. A lot of people label it as a dinosaur or lump it in with them or even depict them together. But Dimetrodon lived millions of years before dinosaurs, and was a basal mammal, splitting off from reptiles long before dinosaurs arrived.

I think the frequency with which Clint uses the term "non-avian dinosaur" is a great demonstration of the *usefulness* of paraphyletic groups, despite his aversion to them. Sure, phyla are the most well-motivated in general, but exceptional sub-groups exist, and it's useful to have terms both for them and the rest. For example, as demonstrated by Clint himself, it's very useful to be able to talk about the non-avian dinosaurs. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue though. I wish we had a proper name for them.

It's also kind of odd to talk about the extinction of the "non-avian" dinosaurs because most avialan dinosaurs and mesozoic birds also went extinct. So it's the extinction of the "non-avian and most avian" dinosaurs. Doesn't really roll off the tongue. I'm honestly not sure how they classify what dinosaurs are avian. Avialans or members of Aves? Glad to hear the correction about Sarcosuchus! The only thing I would note is that you say Sarcosuchus is not a crocodilian but a pseudosuchian, as if they are two separate groups. Rather ironically, true crocodilians are part of pseudosuchia ("false crocodiles") so Deinosuchus is both a pseudosuchian _and_ a crocodilian, whilst Sarcosuchus is a pseudosuchian that sits outside of crocodylia (specifically a tethysuchian that sits in either pholidosauridae or elosuchidae, depending on the phylogeny you use). Oh, and one slight correction is that Deinosuchus wasn't in Alligatoridae itself, it was a basal alligatoroid which means it was closer related to alligators than any other living crocodilians, but wasn't actually part of that group!

One small correction: Deinosuchus only holds the title of largest crocodilian because it has better fossil remains (ironically, since it lived in the Mesozoic and not the Cenozoic, like the other contender), but it has SERIOUS competition from the Miocene cayman, Purrusaurus, which is only known from skull remains, but some paleontologists place it at a size of 12 m long, so quite possibly even bigger than Deinosuchus. @jakkaljakobie8774 Жыл бұрын
@@trevorle7382 the game bases many of the dinosaur models off actual species, but deviates and puts it's own spin on them. For example, the spinosaurus received a TLC update many years ago to reflect it's new body form, but was never updated to change the tail. Jerboas are real, extant animals, but the one in game looks nothing like real life (it's even cuter imo), but the carno is pretty spot on. To explain these changes, the dino dossier lists them as different made-up sub species. This gets more egregious with other dinos. The dilophosaur is modeled off the Jurassic Park version, and has nothing to do with the real life counterpart aside from the head crests. Lore-wise, this is justified through explaining that the dinosaurs are genetically engineered from scratch, and they are doing so hundreds or even thousands of years in the future. The dino dossiers we get in game are written by one of the game's major lore characters, and they are usually accurate to real gameplay but sometimes things got patched and the dossier was never updated to reflect the changes.

I didn't really care about Megalodon but now that you mentioned it - yes, one the coolest thing to be alive. Marine giants are impressive but marine giant predators are even more impressive, since they rely on active predation to feed and eat less "efficient" nutrients, since they are further from the sun in the food chain. If giant beiline whales look like something that shouldn't be possible to exist, giant predators feeding on them and thriving shouldn't exist even more.

When I was a child, Dimetrodon was usually included in books about dinosaurs and in packs of toy dinosaurs, so for quite a number of years, I thought of her as my favorite dinosaur, but sadly that cannot be, as I learned later. So, for many years now, my favorite dinosaur has been the Triceratops. Why? Because I had a terrifying dream about a family of albino Triceratops(es?) in which I learned more about them than I had ever known before from books. When I started fact-checking my dream, I discovered that everything I experienced in the dream-world was probably accurate. Now, having "met" them, I can say with confidence that Triceratops is not only my favorite dinosaur, but also that were one of the full-grown bull Triceratops(es?) to actually get into a scrap with a T-Rex, my money would be on the Triceratops to win, every time! The largest of the creatures I met in my dream was not only much bigger than an elephant, it was also insanely territorial and violent! They may have been herbivores, but those Triceratops creatures were extremely aggressive! I think that any wise T-Rex would have stayed well out of their way. Apologies for the oversharing! I love your channel, and it brings out my inner paleo-enthusiast. --N

If I had to choose a singular dinosaur to put above all others, I would probably, very hesitantly, say parasaurolophus. Their massive hollow crests and ability to be both quadrupedal and bipedal is pretty cool. The sauropods are still shown as swamp dwellers, Spinosaurus is basically a scaled-down Dimetrodon, dinosaur tails were still shown as dragging on the ground, and the only feathers were on the panel for Archaeopteryx. The Chicxulub iridium discoveries were still in the future so the reason for the extinctions was still unknown.
