I use a pump connected to a bottle with foam inside and it cleans my water and makes it clearer without having to syphon. I wanted to say thank you for all you do. it was a pleasure meeting you at Aquashella Orlando. I'm the hybrid fish guy :) took your advice and made my channel dedicated to hybrid fish. Thank you for your advice.

One method I learnt on how to add more sand to an aquarium without clouding up the water is to fill a plastic bottle with sand, fill it with water, turn it upside down in the aquarium and let the sand fall down. It'll be nice and clean with all the cloudy particles suspended inside the bottle. Just cap it and remove it from the tank. Makes it easy to add sand in tight spots instead of dumping it all over the plants and decor.
@SirJamez0
@SirJamez0 2 жыл бұрын
I was literally making a mess in my tank today adding sand while you were commenting this. I learnt you can't take a hand full of wet sand and slowly lower it to the bottom of your tank. It just disintegrates in your hand, no matter how tight you hold it!

Great tips! I use a plastic colander to rinse my gravel. It lets me get more rinsed at a time and shaking the colander really gets all the smaller particles rinsed out. A colander also comes in handy if I have some gravel and sand mixed and I want to separate them out. I just do it in a bucket of tank water so the sand is collected in the bucket and the gravel stays in the colander.

As someone who was 'out' of the hobby for a few years with a new job/career change, I agree completely with downsizing the livestock! Most of my tanks are now plant and shrimp only, it's a huge relief To not have to find time every weekend for huge water changes. Now I have about three years of Aquarium Co-op videos to catch up on!

This came just in time. I had no idea this hobby was so time consuming when I started 😅 As much as I love aquatic plants, I think I should limit how many (and what kind) I put in a tank. They do create detritus when they shed leaves or if they start to melt. It results in lots of cleaning and sometimes excess biomass.
@ScruffyCityAquatics
@ScruffyCityAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
That initial melt back should be all that you experience unless they are missing some nutrients. More plants help with keeping the water quality high.

LOVE snails! I picked up a few by accident in online plants from somewhere other than Aquarium Coop (I know, I know...learned my lesson). I got to missing one of my algae eaters a while back. Finally found him behind some rocks, snails were making short work of the carcass. Went ahead and took the remains out then, and treated my snails to a little green bean snack!

@@Definitelynotacelebrity that is a great tip. When it isn’t freezing I water my landscaping with it. I pump or siphon into a 32 gallon trash can on wheels and then go around watering everything. I need a 100’ extension cord and I can pump it all out. 😅

@@godschild5587 believe me, I don’t want to waste water. My water utility bill is higher than my energy bill. Our local water company is ran by professional crooks. I have 10 aquariums and decided I'd be a little less human and overstock one of the tanks. Holy crap! Did this tank ever turn into a chore. I won't say all the fish are as happy as they could be; they could be in the wild. But to appropriate ensure the water parameters are safe, tank is clean, It's a lot of careful work. Everyone gets along. Tank is massively planted. Taught myself a good lesson. I at least in my life trust I can make do and manage one larger overstocked tank at least once in my life. Please don't be upset folks I have 9 other species only tanks done right. Only one tank Is overstocked. Anyone else have any experience ? Tips? Tricks? I am open minded and respectful. Thank you. Combine #1 and 2. Ive got smart power strips on all of my aquariums and name one of the outlets “water pump” so that I don’t have to mess with the power cord when I have wet hands. I just say “Alexa, turn on/off the water pump.” Honestly, I don’t know who is still using the old style Zoo-Med day/night timers when getting a smart strip gives you so much more control options.

Fastest way to clean lots of substrate: get a fabric mesh plant pot aka grow bag, it allows water to drain through the mesh but keeps substrate from washing away. throw your sand/gravel in the grow bag, run it under a faucet. No awkwardly draining a bucket of sand and water anymore.

How about nerite snails? They don't eat live plants and don't breed in freshwater, only leaving small white eggs which dissolve after a while. There are several kinds with different looks to choose from. They are hardworking, fun to watch and have doors (operculum) to protect themselves.
