When I fed my fishes 3X a day, the water became cloudy due to uneaten food. The nitrate level became so high that some fishes died. I now feed my fishes once a day up to 30 seconds of eating with fasting twice a week. The water is so clean and clear and the nitrates became low. No fish died since then.

Thanks Irene. Great video. I just bought one of those floating feeder cones to try. To feed smaller amounts and make it easier to clean up any extra. Setting up a new 5.5 gal and will try it then.

I feel better about feeding them once a day , between 8-10pm because I'm always home during that time and their lights have been on for a few hours at that point. I fast them once a week. I decided that having them on a routine that I knew I could stick to was best. I over feed a little cuz I have shrimp/snails/bottom feeders in the tanks and want to make sure they get some too. When I was young and in my prime I would eat all the time. Now that I'm old and gray I might only eat once a day. When I was a bodybuilder I would eat 5 to 7 thousand calories a day. So I watch what my fish eat and take into consideration their age and activity level. Also as you said the food should be of quality. I do cut down on the protein like bloodworms as they get older.

How much they can eat in 2-5 minutes - is an instruction I never understood. A new hobbyist who has never seen an expert feeding the fish will definitely overpollute the tank based on that instruction.

I feed twice a day. Tetras & Rasporas in one tank. Tiger Barbs in another. If they dont go at it aggressively in the am feeding then I skip the pm feeding.

i'm struggling to figure this out atm. i got some otocinclus two weeks ago, and they demolished the algae i'd grown for them in just two days - so i started feeding them algae tablets, cucumber and squash, which they seem to love! however, now there's a lot of algae again, and i guess they're eating their fill on the things i feed them? however, i'm really scared of underfeeding them since i've read that their gut bacteria will die without food, and i'm constantly paranoid that they'll die (doesn't help that they hide under the filter where i can't see them, so it's difficult to check if they're all alive and well). should i fast them until the algae's gone?

I've had a betta for abt 1.5 years now and have also added a 30 gal community tank to my collection. This tank has cherry barbs, neon tetras and shrimp. This tank has been up for abt 3 months. I've been researching and reading and watching youtube channels to gather more knowledge. Now I'm starting to worry abt getting Planaria in my tank, ESP my community tank as it has shrimp and I LOVE my shrimp! (Want to get a shrimp tank, kind of love!) Do you have a video that educates us on the worms and how to treat, if/when I end up with these pests? Sorry to stick this here but since the worms are said to be a result of overfeeding I figured this question kinda fit here. I've been seeing

This is easier with pellets but you can do it with flakes. Feed the fish one piece of food and wait until they eat it before adding another piece. Continue until they lose interest. When the pieces start sinking to the bottom stop adding food. If I have a bottom feeder like corys add a little extra. This will give you a good idea of how much to feed. Most people feed way too much.

When feeding, I watch to see how much the fish eat to judge the amount to put into the tank. Then what little remains, the clean up crew on the bottom gets.

Same, I keep balloon mollies, glass cat fish and Khuli loaches -- the balloons are pretty efficient at getting food and scavenging leftovers, so I try to make sure the khulis get some of the food during feeding time (the glass catfish are easy because I can SEE they have food in their belly lol)

Hey I’m looking for a response from anyone who know the answer. So basically a friend of mine has some black neon tetras and one of them is getting really skinny and sickly while the others are super fat. She tried to remove it and feed it separately but they are really fast and it’s hard to get the fish alone. How can she get it to eat more? Does she really have to remove it everyday in order to feed it sufficiently

Maybe the friend should quarantine the sick fish in a separate tank for a few weeks then she can really tell what the problem is. That can also help prevent spreading whatever illness to the other fish.

My betta foerschi (male) got super wigged out when I got him a female tank mate of like kind. She is aggressive and is also a little piggy. He is getting a little better but he is looking skinny so I hope he comes out of this phase. Also I have a female betta in a tank with white clouds and neons and she is getting very plump, too plump for her own good. The other fish feed pretty good but having them together with the betta (as she wants as much food as she can get) isn't the best.

Feed so much they eat up everything (100%) within under 5 minuttes. if there is leftovers floating around afer its overfeeding, i have about 50 fish, diffrent size and types.. they clean up a good chunch of food really fast:) i have to make sure there drop enough food to all types of fishes.. many bottom fished also need little extra food on top of the algea they eat.

Fish aren't guaranteed in wild food even daily so one time a day unless you have danios that steal all food so pinch food to 3 corners for all

Their stomachs about the size of their eyes. Good example. I overfed when I first got into the hobby. They're adorably convincing. At times I'll purposely overfeed to get some behaviors to show that they otherwise wouldn't. The depth of their cognitive abilities, co-operative hunting, manipulation of their environment, etc... incredible! Not something I expected with "Just a fish". To compensate I remove any remaining food followed by a water change. Well worth it.

I have 50 red nose rummies. 2 gourami dwarf honey and 10 sterbai cory. I'm struggling to get ANYTHING past the rummies. Ever after lights out. But they all seem happy and healthy. And growing. You could try to pick up the food for the corys with a pipette and reach into the tank to drop the food directly in front of the corys a few times a week. Maybe this will keep the tetras at a distance and as a bonus, the corys get very tame and easy to catch.

Good afternoon, hope all is well. I'm sorry to have to do this here (I'd rather send a private message) but I really don't know how to contact you and I just wanted to make sure someone involved with the business knows that there are at least 2 moderators on the CARE forum railroading new members (or at least just me, don't actually know if they've done this to anyone else) who aren't showing complete deference to them. The moderation is really out of hand. In my 2nd ever post (on my topic/thread) I said something that could have been taken as rude (but apparently wasn't) and the person I was addressing (a longtime forum member) actually apologized to me for how they responded and yet a moderator felt it was necessary to step in on their behalf and warn/threaten me (but not them). When I called that moderator out another, nicer, moderate started to try to mediate (although that first one doubled down and didn't apologize for needlessly side railing my thread) and then next thing you know a 3rd moderator steps in and shuts everything down..... I just wanted to share an experience and get feedback yet these moderators interjected for no good reason and ruined any chance of productive conversation and have penalized me even though the only thing I did wrong was maybe say something slightly rude and then call them out for unfairly going after the new person (probably because they thought it would be easy to do).
