I use all of these on a daily basis. For productivity, these add so much speed to my workflow. I take all these for granted and it’s not until watching this, do I realise the value these simple, yet effective features have. Nice video. You have a very calm, clear and concise why of explaining. Thank you!

Hi Gary! I teach physics for a living. Due to the pandemic, all that teaching has been online. As much as all my students are quite bright, some are being held back simply because of relatively weak computer skills. For these students, I have started to share your videos and I want you to know how much it has helped them. Happy Holidays and continue the great work!!!

great tips...I couldn't get the space bar to do anything (quick look vs. preview?) I'm confused : doesn't do anything watching your video except pause/play....Mission Control & multiple desktops I knew about via trackpad(3 fingers), but I guess I need some practice to get these all to work, or perhaps they don't work all the time?? depending on what app Im in? why are multiple desktops important? if memory use isn't an issue, is it not OK to have everything we're working on all on the same desktop?

When you have a bunch of apps open, control/tab goes through the icons left to right. If, after going partway to the right, you want to go back to the left again, click control/tilde (immediately above the tab key). I call it the tilde key, but I guess technically it is the reverse apostrophe key or whatever that tiny little thing my eyes can't see and I never use is. :-)
@macmost
@macmost 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, Shift+Tab goes backwards in the App Switcher. Command+` will go through open windows for that app -- an in-app Window Switcher.
@bobh9526
@bobh9526 3 жыл бұрын
@@macmost My bad. I meant command/tilde will go backwards. At least it does on my machine. Shift+tab does nothing to change windows on my M1 mini. What am I doing wrong? It does move the cursor from link to link on a web page in Safari, or move the cursor highlight around in a Finder window. But it doesn't go through open windows.
@macmost
@macmost 3 жыл бұрын
@@bobh9526 Yes, Command+Tab forward, Command+Shift+Tab backward, also Command+Tab followed by Command+` backward, as long as you don't lift up on the Command key.

I don't use the app switcher out of spite because that was a feature brought over from Windows the same way cmd-c, cmd-v, cmd-x, cmd-z, cmd-b, cmd-i and cmd-a went to Windows from Mac. I've been hiding apps ever since the feature was available in System 7 thirty years ago. Multiple desktops are something I first learned to appreciate in Linux and was delighted the functionality was included in Mac OS X.

@@macmostThank you for responding, for instance I go to Yahoo and under a "stories for you" heading I'll open a story and instead of a fully readable story it turns into a slide show and instead of using my right arrow to bypass quickly I have to click on the arrow to get to the next slide it would be a lot quicker to just be able to make a keybd selection to get to the next slide but the slides make you go thru every slide one at a time! @Anickelsworth
@Anickelsworth 3 жыл бұрын
As Gary shared, you could consider them as different monitors. I use them to declutter my immediate window. Rather than closing or hiding apps, I can just switch desktops and all is like I left it. At work, I also set up different desktops for functional reasons: email on one, word processing or spreadsheet on another, code work on a third. My brain appreciates knowing the specific focus rather than having it all clustered in one desktop.

@@macmost switching between multiple windows of the app. F.e. Safari. F.e. I have several of them on one workspace and couple more on another. I have some other programs running as well. If I switch to and app on second workspace using Cmd-Tab then I am unable to switch back to Safari window on first workspace. Next Cmd-Tab switches me to the Safari window on current workspace. Right now I use program HyperSwitch which alleviates this a little bit. But I was always wondering what is the right way to handle this without using external apps.
