I absolutely LOVE Hilma af Klint. Her work is so inspiring. Find it quite mind-blowing that she was born in the mid-19th Century! I currently have 3 of her books on my Amazon "Books" wishlist and they've been waiting patiently for me for a while now. Top of that list is her late watercolours book. I see a great deal of reference to the womb and it's structures within a lot of her paintings. Although I'm not sure if anybody else can see this! I have an obscene amount of art books which my husband and I have been collecting for years now but I just can't stop finding "must haves". Time spent in second hand bookshops is never time wasted. And, as far as I'm concerned, an Artist can NEVER have enough art reference books and art biographies 😊. Anyhoo, thanks for another fabulous flick through.

(whoops! posted this on the wrong video!) I had never heard of Hilma af Klint either, so I looked her up on my library website and found a 2020 film about her called Beyond the Visible: Hilma af Klint. It was very interesting, and seeing her works hanging in a gallery, it's amazing how large some of them are-- like the one on the cover is floor to ceiling. Perhaps your library system also has a streaming film option?

This is such a great series, Laura. I don't care for geometric patterns but I still enjoyed seeing some of the books. Hilma's too out there for me, but it was interesting to see how different her work was from other artists of her time. Two books I want to check out are Creative Walls by Geraldine James and Timeless Paris by Marin Montagut. Other books you might like are Art Forms in Nature by Ernst Haeckel and Anna Atkins' Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns. I don't own them (yet) but they look really interesting. So many books, so little money and time! Haha!

The Guggenheim in NYC had a big Hilma af Klint show a few years back (I wanna say 2017-2018?) which is where this book is from. I believe it was the first major retrospective of her work and it was what really introduced a whole bunch of people to her since she stipulated her art not be shown until she died ... and interestingly believed a white circular building with a spiral structure would be best to display her works, and that is precisely what the Guggenheim in NYC is! That show changed my life. I saw it twice. It also opened my eyes to investigating a whole thread of early 20th century female artists who were bringing metaphysical and scientific inquiry into their art in various ways and many of these women have fallen into the cracks in the canon. I would also recommend Agnes Pelton if you don't know her.
@LauraHornArt4 ай бұрын
This weekend I watched Beyond the Visible and I learned about the temple she envisaged for her paintings; the Guggenheim was a great match for her vision. I will check out Agnes Pelton, I am on a similar journey of discovery!! Absolutely fascinated by Hilma's work. Life-changing for sure!

About Hilma af Klim. I wish we had some short of writing about her process or her artwork from her. We only have analysis from art historians. Which, let's be honest, is rarely NEVER a good analysis. Also, the fact that somehow now there is this trend to idealise her artwork is starting to be annoying. The only merit seems to be the fact that she was ahead of its time. But there is not much information to go deeper in such statement.
@ginawoods20715 ай бұрын
A word of caution about Hilma - she practiced spiritualism including seances, and claimed that her work contains messages from spirits. Spirits aren't all good and these works may contain satanic messages.

Thanks Laura for going through these interesting books…only it would be nice if you spend more time showing the content of the books instead of we have to look at your sweet face. It is often difficult to find out about a book on the internet, and when you do use time and space to show a book, it is so frustrating that you show so much talk instead of flipping slowly through the book while talking. By the way Hilma af Klimt means Hilma OF Klimt, “af” is Swedish for “of”.
