I made that "mustn't" mistake in reverse and it haunted me ever since. When I was a young kid and just in my first year of learning English, relatives from England visited us. Among them was a young boy, 1 year younger than me. We and a few other kids played together and one of the other ones shoved a drink in the English kid's hand and told him to drink. I wanted to tell him he doesn't have to drink, if he isn't thirsty and erroneously said: "You mustn't drink this." And that happened several times during his stay. I wonder what he was thinking about me constantly telling him he can't drink anything, hehe.

@haben/sein for perfect tenses: It's not just about movement. It's about moving around or away or so. Stationary movement doesn't count. For instance "tanzen / to dance": Flailed on the dancefloor? Ich habe getanzt. (It's movement at one point) Jumping through the apartment? Ich bin durch die Wohnung getanzt. (That's movement over some distance) or "rudern / to row": I rowed for two hours. Ich habe zwei Stunden gerudert. (while sitting on the row seat) I rowed across the lake. Ich bin über den See gerudert. (traveled a distance)

Yes the movement explanation is always a bit misleading IMO. It's mostly about a change of state, and that includes movement of you, the subject, in the sense of you start in one place and end in another place. But if there's a direct/transitive object, that is you move another thing, it's haben. Ich bin mit dem Auto gefahren, vs. Ich habe das Auto gefahren = I went there by car (change of location) vs I drove the car (and maybe ended up back home - no change in state). There are plenty of examples that are nothing to do with movement - i.e. passieren (to happen) and gelingen (to succeed), sterben (to die). And then there's bleiben which uses sein even though it explicitly means "not a change in state". And sein itself as well. I think the worst thing about all this is the whole putting the verb at the end. Because you start with "Ich habe..." because you're talking about the past, say a whole load of other stuff and then: "gegangen" - oh !*"*% I should have used Ich bin. English used to do all this, and then we dropped it. So like the "must not" example you can blame English for being wrong.

Hey Trixie, I dont know if anyone ever mentioned this, but i live near a Tourist town, And of the Tourists from other countries, the German and Scandinavian tourists are by far the most well behaved and polite. It would be hard for me to say which was better behaved. So, possible Positive stereotype? Many Shop owners i know actually give a sigh of relief when a group of tourists come in to her shop, and she hears German be spoken, because she knows they will be polite and not cause trouble. I don't know if this is something others experienced, but it seems to have some truth in my area.

as an Australian I am using the quarantine time to start learning German, it's slow going but fun, simple things like this are what I need to improve on, words are easy and I can make basic sentences but grammar is hard. on another note, I am told that I speak quite monotone in German which is interesting.

Thank you so much Trixie! Your video definitely makes a couple things I have had a difficult time learning make a little more sense, especially where direct translation doesn't apply. Sentences with stehen, liegen, machen and laufen (etc) have always given me fits, because when I see the English translation it sort of makes sense in a very literal way. Oh! I don't know if you've done a video on this, but a mistake I make a lot is when to use da-words (it was a long time before I learned they're pronominal adverbs formed from a preposition + demonstrative/interrogative pronoun, and keeping in mind that some of them exist in formal English has helped: e.g. "by what" = "whereby" = wobei ; "about that" = "thereabout" = "darüber").

The last one could probably also be _verallgemeinert_ a little bit: not just movement, but state transition, i.e. changing the state. So, this could also include things like "es *ist* gestorben" or "ich *bin* ... geworden"

I‘d argue the haben/sein distinction is a bit more complex in everyday speech, at least in some regions. Personally I‘d distinguish „Ich bin geflogen“ and „Ich habe geflogen“ as the former being more general, including me as a passenger whereas the second one specifies me as the pilot („Ich habe das Flugzeug geflogen.“). I can only assume it‘s due to „fliegen“ actually taking over the meaning of „steuern“?

Kein Problem. Meine Muttersprache ist Spanisch. Ich bin Mexikaner. 😁 My problems with German language are other ones. We can find the difference between "bedeutet" (significar/querer decir) and "meinen" (opinar/querer decir). The problem comes with the fact that we aren't familiarized with the "V2" syntax. 😅 Also, the accent. Pronouncing high German is almost like pronouncing French. So, we tend to read the final "~er" as "~eeerrrrrr" (rolling R instead of uvular trill). For us, the way we hear that sound is more like an "A" or an English "uh". 😅

ive found that in my languages being learned, that sometimes when a grammatical thing doesnt make sense, its really in finding perhaps an older way of saying it, like how it would have been said in the 1920s or something because in the older dialect if you want to call it that, there seems to have been less slangifying of the actual structure such that the structure used to match more closely the way these things are presented in other languages to learners. same thing with odd vocabulary. often, thinking of a different way of saying the same thing can reveal a perfectly correct english version of whats being said. also, just saying, i really adore your wit and humor in your videos

Very well done! I'm an Egyptian who learned German in Egypt, along with English and Arabic. I notice that I often mess up that whole "verb am ende" deal. Sometimes it makes sense to me and I know what verbs to put where, but sometimes I just approach it like I would in English and I don't throw the verb in the end. Example: "Pah, als ob Ich das wüsste". I might likely fall into the mistake of instead saying: "Pah, als ob Ich wüsste das (or even dass). Any tips on that? And of course, gut gemacht wie immer!

Must not is a dated phrasing in American English. It is a very strong concept though compared to the replacement "Do not". Must not is far more forbidden.

SPELLING IS IMPORTANT TOO! English has the "i before e" rule but switching those letters around wont necessarily change the pronunciation/meaning of the word...but in German "ie" makes a different sound than "ei" and makes the word you are trying to spell have a completely different meaning. For example, misspelling "schießen". Our German teacher had a good laugh at our expense that day!

In Swedish, we use the words "betyda" and "mena" similarly. Probably due to influence from Low German: "Vad betyder det?" (What does it mean?) and "Vad menar du?" (What do you mean?). And for so. "Du får inte göra så (här)." (You are not allowed to do [like] this) "Du måste göra så här." (You must do like this.) " Så" (so) and "Här" (pronounced "haihr") means "here". "Dürfen" corresponds to "få" (may). It can also mean "get". "Får jag åka?" (May I go?) An, "müssen" is "måste" ("moss-teh") "Du måste äta upp din mat" (You must eat up your food)
