Awesome First Guest. Pyzell what a cool dude. My new Favorite Surfer is Tora Watanabe. You should have him on your Podcast when he's in Town. Super cool Cat and his Dad is. super chill maybe both. I meet at the cold water classic Santa Cruz he came in 2nd lost to Kolohe Andino at the Buzzer in the Finals. Rides The Pyzell noticed--Pyzell brought him up in the Podcast. He's. my pick not only to make it to WCT but be in the Top 5.

Love your stuff guys, I really enjoy your attitudes and your ability to keep everything low key. However, it would be awesome to hear you guys jump even more into his past with you guys. What drew him to it? How shaping has changed from when he was a kid in SB. How you met him would be super cool to hear also! Knowing he is a friend to you guys it would be so much fun to hear it through the conversation and stories you guys have. Either way, love to listen to this at work!

Growing up 3rd gen HB now 62yro... I get so inspired by anything you put out. Have to say that I am so grateful to see the greats like Pyzel, they have the secrets of the ocean within their souls. (Growing up they would have me test all the new boards because if it could be trashed out I would prove it) You never lose the eye, whether shaping a board or seeing the sets roll in.... a little piece of the heart of Mother ocean in every board

Appreciate the discussion about environmental impacts. The surfing community in general is well aware but it's good to still talk about it for those who may not think about it otherwise. Great conversation all around and very informative description of epoxy vs reg glass boards!
@jamesroscoe7555 Жыл бұрын
The most environmentally sound board is the one that is least inclined to break because they are all plastic waste. Of course there are tradeoffs between strength and performance and cost. Laminating with epoxy, S-glass, Innegra, Dark Arts' process, etc are more expensive but can make a tougher board. Really enjoy the podcast! Thanks for bringing Pyzel on!
@jamesroscoe7555 Жыл бұрын
@@jt3366 I've made a few boards now glassed with 4oz s glass (4/4+4). It is slightly less flowy to laminate than e, but no heavier. The boards are really tough. Probably the main reason it is not more common is the cost, but it's strength is better matched to epoxy than e. I've also played around with innegra and basalt laminations, but the s glass seems good enough (actually basalt is pretty comparable but much harder to laminate since it is dark and you see every fiber, sand through, etc).
@jamesroscoe7555 Жыл бұрын
@@jt3366 Also, with weight, the board is floating the mass of the board plus rider. I'm sure pros are hyper tuned in to feel the board lightness doing airs etc, but a lb difference in a board is a pretty small percentage of the total mass of board +rider. I'm from Canada and this time of year, we add an extra 10 lbs of soaking wet 6/5/4, boots, and gloves. I agree with you, I'd rather have a stronger board than have a super lightweight board that is easy to ding.
@jamesroscoe7555 Жыл бұрын
@@jt3366 I agree completely, especially riding comparable boards back to back. I mostly added that because human weight was left out of the discussion in the video where he talks about how deep a board sits in the water (poly vs EPS). What he says is true, but the human (+ suit) weight variation can dwarf it. We often put on or lose weight gradually and maybe adapt before we notice.

Less weight fights you paddling into solid offshore. Like holding a piece of paper in the wind vs a book.

I like most of the surfers on Pyzel's boards and have thought about getting one or two myself. While, honestly I have never considered the environmental impact of surfboards themselves (guess I am just a bad person), hearing Pyzel be so honest about the negative impact and not sugarcoat it shows so much integrity, which I am sure is carried throughout his whole business. Guess I will need to pull that trigger on a purchase soon.

Loved this podcast! Just wished we could have been shown the boards talked about. Anyways, it helped bring me more up to date because to be honest all I can remember was my ‘66 Brewer 9’2 baby gun that I practically slept with every night. It was my only board and was sooo gorgeous. I never surfed Laniakea or Himalayas over 7-8’ so never got out of it all it could do, but who cares. And I loved this podcast because it reminded me of how much loved to hang out with the guys, especially in surf shops … resin & catalyst was my Home … used to fix my own dings. Nate & Koa, just love you guys because you are just so open and don’t try to be anything else than who you really are. Hugs from Kona

Just to bring some clarification to the EPS and PU foam blank environmental implications, PU foam is known as a thermoset, meaning once it's formed the bonds can't be broken and remolded. So when you make a PU blank, that petroleum-based product can't be recycled again into another product so all that's left for it to do is just take hundreds of years to biodegrade. However, EPS is a thermoplastic, meaning it doesn't create any chemical bond during curing that prevents it from being recycled again into another product. So what makes EPS foam blanks more environmentally friendly is the fact that it's recyclable and can be used again, whereas PU foam blank is unrecyclable and can't be used again. The biodegradability of both of these petroleum-based products is horrible and takes hundreds to thousands of years to biodegrade and usually break down into microplastics that can potentially end up harming marine and land species, but at least EPS foam can be used again and again so we don't have to keep sourcing and creating new foam blanks. The surfing industry needs to create a sourcing point in which surfers can send or drop off old blanks to be responsibly dealt with, or even recycled to be used again if it's an EPS blank. It's important as stewards of the ocean that we as a surfing community inform and educate ourselves of the implications of the very tool, surfboards, we use to commune with mother earth. Much love to everyone!
