I’ve struggled with insomnia for years. I overcame it with meditation, no screens before bed, a lot of exercise, quitting caffeine and cutting way back on cannabis. The biggest help by far was meditation. Ruminating thoughts will keep u awake all night. Calm the mind and sleep becomes way easier. It’s usually not a sleep issue, it’s an over active mind issue.
@C.Hawkshaw Жыл бұрын
Meditation makes new pathways from your gut to your brain and the rest of your body. It gives you a better “gut instinct”. Then you don’t have to think so hard with your brain about reading every daily interaction with people, and waves, and animals.
@joeblow1942 Жыл бұрын
I struggle with insomnia often too. Can’t do caffeine at all and cannabis kills REM sleep.
@djrakman3909 Жыл бұрын
meditation does not work for me anymore ever since i had a life changing head injury, the ruminating thought never go away and get worse as i am trying to sleep. If anybody is in the same catergory as me and struggling i suggest zopiclone. I basically puts your brain in the same mindstate as deep meditation but heavier and more sedative. Quitting coffee and pot and cutting back on sugar is vital, also fasting during the day and eating only once at night as much as possible makes a huge difference to slowing down your metabolism and getting to sleep at nights. Serious insomnia can not be cured with anything else except meds like zopiclone....

Nate, just as the megaburst of energy you get since you started eating early in the day,Try to reverse the process at the end of the day so you are not generating the insane energy. The reason you feel so different and crave food is how the name breakfast was formed. It is when you break your body fast. Once done the cycle starts. Good luck with upcoming year and don’t worry about what is appreciated by the masses. Pioneers aren’t appreciated. Look how long Jeff Clark surfed Mavericks by himself. We watch and appreciate every time you are in the water. You and Koa are the future!!

A really enjoyable podcast and discussion about big wave and slab surfing. A lot of big wave surfing at Nazare for example, seems like the surfer is outrunning the wave as opposed to surfing it (apart from Kai Lenny and a couple of other notable exceptions) Slab surfing seems to be far more about the surfer getting into the wave and locking in to the barrel using speed and technique; as Nathan states, it is far more technical to surf a slab. Cheers

Caffeine has a half-life, meaning your body is still metabolizing it in half it's intensity even after the obvious stimulation has worn off. It could still be present in your system for up to 9hrs after ingestion. And that midday coffee or energy drink is like hitting replay on the process; your sympathetic nervous system will be all keyed up. In terms of exercise, everyone's thresholds are different, but if pushed too far, a sustained adrenal response leads to a cortisol response. At that point, your sympathetic nervous system is overstimulated. Flood your body with caffeine and cortisol and you're looking at the recipe for "tired but wired." Parasympathetic nervous system activation will help. Meditation, yin yoga, breathwork (pranayama) - these all stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system. And alcohol for sleeping is a fools remedy. It will put you to sleep initially, yet keep you from deeper stages of restorative sleep as your blood sugar spikes throughout the night, resulting in low quality sleep. That equates to low quality athletic recovery which cumulatively leads to stress and eventual injury. Stay away from caffeine after midday. Avoid alcohol before bed. Be kind to your adrenal glands. Foster a relaxation practice 🤙🏼

the difference to surfers is when the ocean is FLAT on the back and 20 feet on the front, like teahupoo, and the lip is 10 feet thick...it's really about the amount of ocean folding over the reef...that's why teahupoo is so unique.

Love the podcast guys. It would be great if you also went over kind of what you did for the week with surfing and some upcoming trips and things that are going on in the surfing community. Would also be cool if you guys attack topics from the perspective of not doing anything about surfing so that you appeal to a wider audience. Maybe just could be done by explaining terms. Something else that I feel like what up the game is also, if you guys had your own independent mics and maybe some good background noise like the ocean or outside with the birds. Also, I would love to hear your guises take on the Apple series, make or break and maybe what do you think its affect on the surfing culture and popularity it has.

I agree with the wave talking. slab waves look crazier. It looks like they crash down instead of rise up. One thing they have in common is I would never get near them. Shoulder to head high is right about my max. I have the most fun on waste high but I only surf in San Diego and not as often as I did at your age.

Question for you guys… what is your thoughts on helmets at pipe and in big wave surfing, and why don’t you wear them? This came from watching the Eddie, anytime someone ate it on a big drop, it looked like their heads slap pretty hard on the water. Does that actually happen or was I just seeing things? If you guys are wearing impact suits for the big falls and reef, why not use that same protection for your head?

I have been thoroughly enjoying you guys, since I found your Podcast. I grew up just north, of a strip of sandbars where Koa showed up around a year or so ago, and I believe he left a bit surprised over the conditions he found there that day. There is a very interesting guy, from the NS community, who also grew up here, and regularly commuted to that same strip in N.C. at an early age, where he developed such a love of Surfing, that he left here at 17, and moved to the NS. A Buddy of mine, who I met in the early 90's, kept asking my girl & I, to go to Hawaii with him, & meet his childhood buddy, who was an established Surf Photographer there. In Feb. of '96, we finally agreed to go, and it turned out, that his Buddy was everything Dominic had bragged about. When we arrived, Brian had set us up with a bedroom in Foo's back house, that everyone there claimed, was the room right below a little room where Mark once slept, and could check the waves from when he woke each morning. It was also likely a good spot to watch Koa the morning of the Eddie, panicking & parking his truck. This trip set off a few incredible experiences for me. Like Dominic, & Brian convincing Melissa & I to postpone our return flights, & extend our visit from 21 to 25 days. On the 24th day, we drove to Brian's(likely very close to Koa's house), to thank him for his hospitality, and arrived to find his roommate Vince, in a springsuit holding his flippers & camera. He asked us for a ride to Pipe, to shoot a contest being held that day. We had no idea, but even though it was raining & overcast, we were there. We saw some big names, and I joked around with this cool old guy passing out jerseys, about trading my WRV sweatshirt, for his HIC contest tee shirts. And the winner, of his first Pro Contest: Some Kid named Andy Irons. But this is about a guy some of the younger people may not know very well, but would make a very likeable & interesting guest on your Podcast- Brian Bielman! Sadly, our mutual friend Dominic passed away a couple of years ago, but Brian has very interesting stories about people he's met while waiting for contests all over, he has an incredible knowledge & interest in Rock & Blues music, and a one of a kind collection of his photography, perfect for any residence or business. I hope he's available if you guys are interested. I know I'll enjoy it..... Mark's sister Sharlyn, told me that the old guy passing out jerseys, was "Original Hawaiian Beachboy": Rabbit Kekai. I have a cool photo of him and Derek Ho. I also have rare video of A.I. in his Semi & Final heat, but I had never used a Video Cam before, & didn't know there was a zoom. "Dork!"

About sleep. You might have some PTSD from the spinal fracture. Your brain and gut are arguing about whose fault it was that you went ahead on that wave. It was your brain’s fault. Your brain has ego. Your gut doesn’t. Your brain can never process as quickly or deeply about danger as your gut can. After an injury, your gut will work harder to send you the message about that incident. If you resist it, and let the brain say “I got this” , the war rages on, and you won’t sleep, for the tension. Let the message come in. Embrace it, feel it. Don’t think. Keep feeling it until the gut is reassured that next time you will humble your brain to the gut’s supreme processing power. Your gut wants to protect you.

(Conversation at ~16 mins) the difference with other sports is that the playing field is the same. That's not the case with surfing. Some people rip at lowers but cannot compete at Chopes and vice versa. I would love them to go back to the old way of crowning the Champion. Also, other countries outside of the US don't operate on the "Super Bowl" model so it does really suck for us. Love the podcast!!!

It was meant to be used in a way to give you positive messages and all that kinda thing but I modified it so that my body was relaxed and more importantly I thought about nothing as that was the problem for me getting to sleep, my mind would race. It does take an age, at least a month every night doing it and I'm well out of practice, but it's worth a go.
