Totally dude! I think mastering is such a tricky concept to explain. Once you know what’s happening, you’re kind of like... “that’s it?” But then you realize the art form that it really is - and how much of the tracking and mixing process that really makes a good master.

I know I'm like 9 months late for this, but I use the API Vision Channel Strip on literally everything. I just act as if we have an API console. Every single item gets that plugin, no exceptions. I also use the Ampex ATR-102 on my master bus on everything. It's crazy how it can transform a mix from good to finished immediately. I'm a fan of the Distrssor, as well, especially on bass, sometimes I can do all of my bass tone shaping with that. Having a compressor with built in saturation and filtration is very nice.

Hi Steve! Congratulations for your amazing and helpful channel! My favorite uad plug is Lexicon 244 digital reverb, it’s great! One question, i want to buy an interface for my new computer via thunderbolt 3. I had before the classic rme fireface 800, but I’m felt in love with UA Apollo Solo... but, what about the AD/DA converters?? How is it in comparison with the rme800 in terms of sound of converters?? May be is it better Apollo Twin X?? Thank you so much!
@TheSteveKinney3 жыл бұрын
The twin X from everything I’ve seen in the hardware manual - and comparing them across the market is absolutely unreal. Some of the best AD/DA, Dynamic range, THD specs out there. The Solo is damn close. The twin is a bit better. Now - I use both and I don’t really notice a difference particularly. I use the solo to track at other studios and other rooms - when I’m on the go. My main room at my apartment is just too noisy downtown. And believe it or not - the solo is nicer than the rme800. The twin is even nicer. Don’t take my word for it though - compare the hardware manuals and scroll to the tech specs! Hope that helps! Cheers Ray

If I get an apollo for recording jazz guitar only (clean guitar) what plugins do you recommend? I will plug the guitar straight to the guitar input on the front of the interface
@TheSteveKinney3 ай бұрын
Eeeeehhhhhhhhh. I mean, for jazz, I’d recommend amplitube 5 max. Their clean tones are wayyyy better than the UAD amp sim clean tones. Just being honest. Now the Apollo interface is an amazing interface still. But just saying.
@lekinguitarrista84453 ай бұрын
@@TheSteveKinney my biggest concern is recording with latency. I got a scalert 2i2 4th gen. I returned it the next day because I can’t take the smallest latency when playing. If I use the apollo solo with amplitube 5 will I get any latency? Or would you think is better to record and add the amplitude plugin after , just to solve the latency? I really like the idea of the apollo solo to avoid the latency. Thank you so much for your channel man!
@TheSteveKinney3 ай бұрын
@@lekinguitarrista8445 a lot of people fundamentally misunderstand where latency comes from. It’s entirely from your cpu at this point. The interfaces were only the problem about 10-12 years ago. The Apollo also hasn’t had a significant redesign in about that amount of time. The reason it has no latency is because - when you use their plugins, you are sending your signal into the interface - the onboard processors compute your signal and split it. One signal goes into your daw The second signal is immediately sent straight back out of the Apollo - now if you throw on a UAD-2 plugin, this is also where it’s processed, by the interface and then sent out. So - the latency of a round trip from your mic or guitar into the daw and then processed by your CPU and then spit back out to your interface hasn’t change. That’s physics. You are bottled necked by your computer. Unless you have a way around it. The only ways around it is some sort of DSP or FPGA system or go entirely analogue. So. The Apollo. Antelope. Or pro tools HDX. Both the limitation of the Apollo and Antelope is that they will only run THEIR plugins in real time. There are a few others - but. Yeah. That’s the gist of it.

Hi Steve, is the UAD basically only game in town (as far as good plugins if one doesn't want to get hardware/mic pre-amps) or is there an alternative out there? Thanks
@TheSteveKinney3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know - they are the only game in town that is modeling the pre-amps and getting the actual hardware preamp on the interface to gain stage, and impedance match the hardware it’s emulating. Making it actually incredibly realistic. There are a number of other high quality interfaces and a number of options now included DSP - but those only take the processing load off the computer. They don’t simulate at the hardware level. My take - is that it’s the best way like you said - to get tons of classic gear and not actually have to fork out money for the real thing. Pretty damn special. Cheers.

thanks! whats the difference between the fader and the output knob in the neve?
@TheSteveKinney10 ай бұрын
The output knob at the bottom is a digital trim aka a literally clean volume knob. The fader on the other hand - is a modeled output section of the neve 1073. So - as you gain up the preamp signal - obviously the signal gets louder - and you can get the “saturation” of the neve by turned the digital gain down - and leaving the fader up. So you’re getting output section clipping. Aka saturation. In the real world, youd just be literally clipping/overloading the neve and you’d have to have something in the chain after the neve in order to get your overloaded signal down to a “normal” signal level…. Or you pull the fader down and lose some of that saturation. Hopefully this all makes sense! Cheers!
@tendingtropic777810 ай бұрын
@@TheSteveKinney thanks great explanation. does turning the output faders up also introduce some 'analog' distortion/saturation?
@TheSteveKinney10 ай бұрын
@@tendingtropic7778 yes, there are some non linear characteristics, subtle tone changes to that as well. Much harder to notice if I’m being honest, mainly because headroom is really coming from the preamp section going INTO the output section… But there is definitely some tonal changes throughout the taper of the fader.

Hey Rohit, Great to see ya in the comments section again. Thanks for watching! I’d love/have to get my hands on the space delay to compare them! They mentioned in a livestream that the license ran out - so they legally had to change the name. However, it’s still the same code. So yeah! It rocks. I think I’d have to name my pack something else in that instance - like the sound toys session pack or something lol love it.

It is impossible to chose the top 5 UAD plugins. They are light years ahead the competition. My all time favourite is SSL E. UAD are the masters of emulations so if you combine them with something surgical and precise like FabFilter bundle you should be set for life and neve need any other pugin. Ever.

@@kontemplatemusic2189 totally! I love the ssl too! The input section on that is pretty bang on, I had some VHD hardware units, I even have a video comparing the hardware and plugin. Almost no difference and that’s in a direct vacuum. Also, I love SSL’s 4K too. Those sound incredible as well.

Thanks, but you can improve your sound quality. Again, thanks for the video.

Yeah man! There was an issue at one point while I filmed - I had my camera on charge while I had my lapel mic plugged in - and didn’t know until after the fact that it would pick up the 60hz hum lol So now I have about 4 batters at full charge all the time lol Sorry about the audio issues!

My question is why are there so many damn plugins that do the same thing?

Hey Kenny, What do you mean? like in general across the industry?

@@TheSteveKinney In UAD? There are so many EQs. Limiters. I'm on their site about to buy the 10 plugin bundle but... What the hell to buy for hip vocal mixing and also plugins on the beat (stems)

@@KennyLauderdale hey brotha! Great question. Love that bundle. I did that myself the first go round last year. You’re definitely gonna want some staples for the sound. 1. Ssl g bus comp 2. Ssl channel strip 3. Neve 1084 4. Avalon pre 5. Lexicon 480L or 224 or AMX verb 6. 1176 collection 7. La2a collection or la3a It’s always a good idea to have some tape plugins too. The atr 102 great choice. Whether you go the Luna route or the plugin route. Outside of that - good idea to have a great de-esser. Again whether that’s a UAD or something different... you can find a number of good ones out there. Those would be my top recommendations. After that - a lot of it becomes personal taste and creative choice. Cheers mate!

I do have them on a lot of videos. Haven’t gotten around to it on others. KZbin has me eligible for monetization but hasn’t approved yet. And I don’t make a living from this channel. When I have the time - I do my best to get to stuff like this. 😎💯 Cheers mate!

Yeah - my camera was on a low battery so I had it plugged into power, and the Lav mic that was also plugged into the camera was picking up the electricity. Unfortunately, I only found out about a week later when it hit the editing room lol - wasn't about to redo the entire video. Sometimes, the show must go on. Cheers brotha! Steve

Calls himself engineer. Can’t record a fkng lav without hum noise and distort it
@TheSteveKinney3 жыл бұрын
ACTUALLY Daniel lol My Sony a7 iii was plugged into the wall charging while the lav was plugged when filming. Didn’t know at the time of filming that there would be electrical interference from my camera - days had passed - as you know I was doing other engineering things - then when I got to edit I said “the show must go on”. Lol Funny comment though. Cheers.
