Knowing full songs, even with simple chords, is a million times more useful than any of the licks, riffs, or solos I used to practice over and over and over. I wish I learned that sooner.

Yea but aren’t riffs cooler when you are at a boring party?😮

Well done. Ive found that even just switching from my electric to an acoustic as I work through learning something new can help. Its harder to pull off a lot of the stuff on an acoustic for me, so when I need to tighten the song up, i play on it until I can make it sound reasonably good. When I switch back to my electric, things are tighter, and I flow a bit better.

Great advice. This might sound silly but I'm adding foot tapping to my playing. I don't tap my foot when I play so it's a new thing for me. The trick I'm finding is forcing the guitar to follow the foot.

Rhythm. Counting, subdivisions. Took me a long time to realize I wasn’t hearing subdivisions properly. Was it a triplet or a 16th with a rest on the e of 1 e and ah? For example. Sometimes it’s hard to go back and learn what you missed. Thanks for posting.

after 40something years of playing i don't really concern myself with intentionally improving anything with it. I may learn a few things here and there, remember some and forget most, but that's all fine with me

Thanks...you provide some great advice. I have an ever expanding list of covers that I want to learn and try to do a few each day. Lately I've been using Chordify a lot to get me started and then figuring out how to make the song "mine" and of course often have to transpose it to fit my voice. Appreciate the suggestions!

My struggle is I only play full songs. But it’s real hard to know a lot of songs I want to know how to play. I can’t play boring to play songs. Majority are E or A minor so I can slip my way through the solos. Been in this rut for roughly 15 years

I like to think that after 20 yrs I’m not gettin better but I am just gettin more n more idiosyncratic. Who wants to be a technical guitar player, the real glory is in carving out something that’s peculiarly you. Character guitar players are the guys Iv always orbited around, it’s also where pretty much all the great songs n live performances emanate from. Give me jack white or Marc Ribotor Joey Santiago over vai or satriani etc any day.

Hey Sean, just wondering if you could do a video of how to palm mute on electric guitar when the volume control is directly below the strings - I find I keep hitting it with my strumming hand. Would really help thanks as ever man!

I mostly play guitar to come up with music that I can sing to. I can get suck for hours just trying to figure out chords that sound good together. I feel like I play the same old chords and a lot of my songs sound similar. There are a lot of insane chords out there my fingers just don’t reach. Not sure if you have put together a video on how to come up with fresh chords that go well together to build a song with a chorus, but there is an idea if you have not 😊

Because of a lot of knowledge I was studying and learning. After 2 1/2 years of every single day practicing and learning. I've reached where I want to be.. wait, just a Campfire Hero that's it.. I was 50 years old when I first picked up a guitar. Now, I've accomplished my mission. Just strumming and singing for friends after grilling out and drinks.. Didn't want to be a technical player. I'm not a flashy player. But I can be everyones Campfire Hero..

Yes very true learn riff maybe learn guitar solo. But if you are in a band you better learn that song note for note from beginning to end. Because now somebody might be paying you. For your.music services.

It's not about the guitar playing expertise ... there are loads of fantastic players. It's all about the songwriting. Mediocre (technically speaking) musicians have become super rich from songwriting royalties and can hire top players, or not, on their recordings. Noel Gallagher is a perfect example. Just saying ...
