1. "winging it" with the animation process 2. thinking that gear / equipment is the most important thing 3. hoarding animations without releasing them 4. failing to make the animation presentable 5. not taking your own artwork seriously

Markust I enjoy to watch Howard go through the animating process for his work while he talks about it. He also goes into greater detail than just what was listed here and elaborates on each point. It’s like a two in one learning process for me, and I’m really appreciative of it because I’m just getting started in animation and Howard your videos are helping me tremendously thus far! Thank you!!

One of my mistakes was I spent way to little time on pre-production. I gave myself only 11 days. This causes back and forth between stages and overall unorganised. And for a 2.5-minute run time that slowly climbed to almost 4 minutes(because new ideas was coming in), 11 days wasn't gonna cut it. What I found interesting was that the first half made sense, but the second half was confusing. So if I just spent a month on planning, It would have been less of a problem. But I would understand why I made that mistake. I got Howard's email and I had like 5 1/2 months to do it, so the thought of using 20% of it just for planning was just too much for me. Another factor is that ambition got to me, and I thought I could fit a 4 minute film in 5 months. Which doesn't help for a story that has such a complex story structure without dialogue. Overall, I realised these through trails. These mistakes is only a fraction of all the mistakes that is possible. So feel free to make mistakes. Failure is just quitting.

My one mistake I will say with Animation after years of animating and being so dirty with it too, for years, was the mindset that of ignoring outside of animation, other media. The masterworks of Directors like Ingram Bergman or films like Come and See, even the great books, are still totally useful to watch even if the media isnt the exact same

A mistake (or at least I think it's one for me) I made was ditching an idea for an animation purely because it wasn't cool enough. I really like drawing/animating flashy ideas and drawing something mundane and calm sounds really boring in my mind (despite knowing that character acting in animation, flows/transitions in animation, and background animation is a thing). I just really like the flashy stuff, the cool stuff. After I ditched that mentality, I feel like whatever I can and or want to animate broadened by so much. I start to go through with animation ideas that aren't just fighting or magical effects and i don't run into art blocks in animation like i used to anymore. I mean...I still like animating the cool stuff so I'm not gonna stop doing that lol

Being a young animator, I take as much time to look at many videos and even tips for certain aspects of them since it’s a huge passion of mine. This video is really helpful! It’s really good talking about not only just the animation itself but also the “physical” and mental attention towards what people want to create. “Hoarding Animations” is what I struggle with the most. I have many I am almost done with or still working on but then I continue to keep making more. Confidence and self esteem is very important for not animation alone but for almost what is part of daily life! This video does really help and honestly I’m going to take in what you say here. By the way your videos are great!

I think a big mistake I make is not practicing or not being satisfied with my practice, I don't like doing drawing or animating not good things and I just can't get my mind to understand that this is practice and with time I get better.

I thought it was gonna be technical but it really surprised bc I definitely resonated with these points :0 I think another big mistake artists make is the idea of competition; rather than seeing it as a way to connect and get help, some see it as I have to be better or I’m nothing. And it affects how you see your and others work

Hi! I really enjoy watching your videos. I do have a question... I come from an illustration background and the idea of animation just doesn't want to leave me but I find it quite hard to get started. Like there are so many ways of doing it and at first, I got quite anxious about the digital software bit and so on. I draw a lot and I read/watched a lot about animation now. But taking the big step to actually animate something is hard for me. If there is something you think could help to break this, I would really appreciate it! Hope that made sense!

you know it really weird no matter how hard I try to give up the desire to create artwork for seemly senseable reasons(not being good enough, you need to make money stop wasting time on pointless art, etc), I still had that nagging impulse after all this years to pick up the pen again. It's crazy to me but maybe I really do have the soul of the artist. seeing how I'm home more often because of the c-virus, I guess I have no excuse but to create now. well... wish me luck ya'll
