Here's a thought for something else. In the 1800s and early 1900s in the Pacific Northwest (among other places) log mills used black powder wedges to split logs that were too big to fit in the mill. It would be interesting to see one in action. P.S keep up the great work.👍

I would love to see the effectiveness of the late WW2 Japanese ceramic grenades. I have a couple of bodies of them and cannot imagine them damaging anything but unprotected flesh. In the post-WW2 era the USN used them to test welds on subsurface ship hulls.
@skrimper3 жыл бұрын
I have a ton of those! (Shell only) My Navy builder uncle was stationed in Okinawa in the 80s and ended up in a hotel attic for a repair, found an entire crate of them and brought them back. They're cool. Always wondered about the lethality myself. The walls are quite thick and they're rather sturdy, dropped one and it was fine. I bet they could do a number. Probably not always though, I have one with some defects

Crazy fun fact!
@andersjjensen3 жыл бұрын
As a kid I put a firecracker in a big wine bottle and ran 'round the corner. Because of the curvature a relatively large triangular piece followed me. It went through a pair of jeans and my undies and far enough into my butt that I had to pull it out. So without having solid evidence I'd still say that a ceramic shell could be pretty dangerous if it was constructed like a pineapple (or similar) provided the charge isn't so overpowered it just turns the ceramic to dust.
@FreeAmericaChannel3 жыл бұрын
@@andersjjensen And thus my curiosity about ceramic grenades. I am interested in learning about their effectiveness against different types of targets like ballistic gel, car doors/windows, body armor, etc. The originals had enough explosive charge to bust poor welds on submerged hulls of ships, so there is some evidence of their power. I can't help but point out the differences between a glass wine bottle and a ceramic grenade, but glass encased explosives have proven their lethality for centuries.
@andersjjensen3 жыл бұрын
@@FreeAmericaChannel Aye, but ceramics can be both harder and denser than glass, so in like for like conditions ceramics look like a hit (no pun intended). Obviously if the ceramic is like adobe earthenware it's going to do fuck all, but if it's like the high density shit they used to encase CPUs in I'd rather get hit by glass... That shit was tough as nails (I tried to drill a hole in the corner of a CPU once. No dice and a molten HSS drill!).

@doughudgens92753 жыл бұрын
According to a book I read on the Army of the Potomac Artillery, not much. The gunpowder charge is a low explosive and only made around 6-12 pieces of the shell. Also not moving with lots of velocity. So effective radius not real big. Canister and grape shells (think big shotguns) worked the best, but in defensive role. For example, the confederate artillery bombardment before Picket’s Charge at Gettysburg did not do much to the Union troops. The latter artillery were major contributors to the failure of the attack.

It would be interesting to see what the process would look like if you zoomed in close to the charge and used a really fast frame rate, even if at a lower resolution. Two things:1. German stick grenade had a cover design to slip over the head for more shrapnel. Plus, could add just more heads for bigger explosive. 2. Read a report years ago that an suicide bomber set of a vest in back of a bus. The driver was pushed against the window shield without breaking. The shockwave alone killed him. His insides were liquid from just the shockwave. Not always shrapnel gets you. Great work
