Great video! A good strategy is to roll into a nearby campground for a night or two too dump your tanks and trash, take on fresh water and propane, do laundry, provision up, take a long hot shower or two, then repeat. It’s like one stop shopping.

I have several more aspects of the technical systems and the WiFi, cell booster and connectivity in general is a big topic. I’ll be sure to address these topics. I think you will only need one, I put the internal antenna near the pass through window and that will boost signal inside the truck. A little Velcro holds it in place. One thing I would suggest, is looking into the spring loaded antennas that you can get with the system. It will make mounting easier and you won’t have to worry about breaking it on a low branch. I’ll discuss that when I put it together!

I'm enjoying watching your videos...very informative. I have a question though. When you said your parts for your solar/charging system would arrive in a week (ref. 10:47 min), where do you have them delivered when you're travelling? Can you have items like this or from Amazon delivered to a local post office and held there for pick up? Thanks.
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 4 жыл бұрын
That’s an excellent question! I’m thinking about doing a video about that topic. It’s rather complicated, especially when you have to get speciality medications delivered monthly. Since FedEx, UPS and USPS all have different policies, it’s been difficult getting deliveries. I usually have to figure out which service will be used to ship, them chose an appropriate FedEx drop off, UPS store or Post Office to have it shipped to. One problem with Amazon is that they use all three services depending on their pricing and the item being shipped. With my last larger order, I found a local computer shop that would accept any package for a $5 fee per package. It takes a lot of planning and phone calls, but it’s doable. There might be a video on that soon!

Pease be careful!!!! It is so dangerous to keep gas strapped to the outside of your truck. fuel should no t be carried anywhere that is prone to impact, which rules out front of vehicle, rear of vehicle/ trailer and draw bars.
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 4 жыл бұрын
Michel B I agree completely. I’m limited on options, but will be mounting it high up on my box in the back of the camper as soon as the bracket ships. I still don’t want it inside the vehicle. Also, its usually empty, we fill it up when we are ready to run the generator. I don’t like transporting gas, but the propane isn’t energy dense enough to meet our needs. Luckily, in about a week, I should be getting most of my power from the alternators and solar which means I can ditch the gas can!

@@Stonyboot I would consider converting the generator to propane since you are still going to have that on board. You'll probably want to keep the generator for emergencies or long stretches without sun but ditch the gas can and still keep a backup power source.

I’m so confused. A boondock is a half shoe, half boot footwear worn by navy enlisted, basically a high top sneaker made of black leather designed to prevent seaman from drowning and or burning their feet off. Given all that, what does that have to do with you taking a shower? Thx
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 3 жыл бұрын
Same word, different meaning. The best I definition I could find is from Macmillan Dictionary: Boondocking is a recent American term that is also making its way into British English. It refers to the practice of staying overnight in a car, caravan, camper van or RV in places that are not set up to accommodate campers, and thus have few or no facilities. The term derives from boondock, a US term for a place that is far from towns and cities, although boondocking might also be done in less remote locations such as car parks and truck stops. The activity is also called ‘dry camping’ or ‘dispersed camping’. Someone who practises boondocking is a boondocker. So boondocking is camping out in the boonies or boondocks. A commonly used phrase when camping without any hookups.

Hi thanks for the great video and just wondering if you add a splash of bleach in your jerry cans when you fill them up with freshwater. When I use city water I'm not so sure I need to add anything extra since there are so many chemicals in there to begin with? I use chem strips people use for hot tubs and swimming pools to determine how much of what is in my water.
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot Жыл бұрын
Great question! For us, when we fill our tanks with city treated water, we don't bother adding bleach. If we fill with non-treated water from a well or something similar, we add a couple drops of bleach. Also, since we don't store our water for more than a week, and , we give it a sniff test before we dump it in the tank, we've never had any issues. In hot climates you might need to adjust your procedures. You have the right mindset, keep it up!

do bears or wild animals ever smell the food you have in the truck camper? is this something to be worried about or no?
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure they can smell it, their sense of smell is incredible! We aren’t worried. It’s unlikely that they would go through the effort to break into the camper. I’d be more cautious in grizzly country. If we do go out at night, we generally shine a flashlight around and make some noise to alert animals that we are there. We can also use the exterior camper lights to illuminate the area. We never leave any food outside and feel pretty secure in our camper. I have seen pictures of damage done by bears trying to gain access. It’s mostly some bent or broken panels, but nothing crazy.

The reliance jugs are ok and definitely better than most on the market, but I'd go for NATO or US Military Water jerry cans - yes, only 5 gal of water but very thick walled plastic that can take a beating. I have mine up on the tongue of my offroad trailer and those jugs hold up nicely. I do use a 12V transfer pump with a hose to transfer water to the on-board tank - that way I don't have to take the jugs off the trailer tongue and I don't have to lift 40lbs around. Of course, my offroad trailer doesn't have a bathroom, but it does have a on demand hot shower which sucks water from whatever supply you give it. That allows me to conserve potable water because we use the shower with water from creeks and lakes - clean enough to suck up, heat and shower in - just keep your mouth shut. Get some old books on how food was preserved way back when. I generally bring several weeks worth on trips and we've never had to head out and buy food on any of our trips. Usually we can stay out there for weeks at a time if we find a water source we can filter for drinking. Yes, dried things like rice and beans go a long way as well as bringing flour and other such base ingredients that store well and if you have the knowledge you can make everything from bread to tortillas right there on a campfire. We go camp with a 30 quart electric fridge and that can keep the few perishable items we bring for weeks. You have a lot of batteries and very few solar panels. I run 200Ah LiFePO4 batteries and 400W solar panels in addition to the Renogy DC to DC charger which is mounted in the back of my jeep and connected to the trailer via a fat 8gauge wire. That pumps spare charge into the batteries while driving since all but 150W of my solar are mobile panels only useful when parked.

We do drink from the tank. I’m pretty fastidious about keeping the tank sterilized. We always keep some clean drinking water in the rig Incase we have a questionable source of water. I’m a backpacker too and we have our filtering equipment with us. I’ll reserve the filtering for when we really need it. We move a lot, which makes it easy to fill up from clean sources. Thanks for the comment/questions! This has become I have gotten a lot of questions about the batteries and will cover them in a future video, so stay tuned. For now, I can tell you that they are a custom design to meet the space requirements that I have in my camper. There was nothing on the market that had the correct capacity and dimensions. I set out to design something to support our needs. They are completely custom and not available, however, with all of the questions people have been asking, I'm looking at options to bring them to market. I'm workin on a second version to improve a few key areas. Check back soon for an update. They did replace our dual 6 V 224 AH AGM batteries since those were only enough to keep us powered for half a day (lots of computer work). Right now, we charge from our generator, we have a full video on that on our channel. I'll also be finishing up our alternator charging system as well as expanding our solar setup soon. We are working on a series of videos to cover RV power systems and will include our entire setup. It's all coming soon!

That's a great question! We are working on a video cover that topic. But, to summarize, we use a family member's address as our permanent address and she forwards our mail as needed. While on the road, we use a combination of USPS General Delivery, UPS Stores, FedEx On-Site, Mail order prescriptions that are delivered to local CVS stores, Amazon, Walmart and other shipping services. The biggest challenge is knowing how a package will be shipped. FedEx, UPS and USPS don't play well together. In those cases, we use ASO (Authorized Shipping Outlets) locations that will receive packages for you and you pay a per package fee. Stay tuned while we turn this topic into a detailed video.

I am very surprised that you go through 38 Gallons of fresh water in three or four days boondocking! My wife and I had a rig with a 40 gallon water tank and we could make it last almost 2 weeks! I think you should seriously take another look at your daily water usage! You can probably extent that 38 gallons to over a week by finding ways to conserve it!
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 3 жыл бұрын
Of course we can extend it! But our goal was to maintain a certain level of “normalcy” part of that is doing dishes and showering. If we are in a place where water is really scare, we adjust our usage. However, most of the time, water is plentiful and easy to obtain. We move frequently and can simply refill. While making this video, the focus was on people new to boondocking and wanted to give realistic usage numbers. We both shower daily and do it in a normal navy shower way. When things get tight, we do more of a sponge bath or skip it all together.

For electrical I ran everything in my RV off of propane and 12 volts. I had two big batteries on my diesel pickup and one battery on my trailer and I would plug the trailer into my truck during the night and run the truck a few minutes during the day to charge the batteries. That gave me enough 12 volt power to run my lights, my TV, and my 12-volt fan blowing on me all night because in the summer it was a record heatwave but that fan kept me plenty cool all night. Converters and inverters have a certain amount of loss making them less efficient and draining your batteries faster. Instead of converting 12 volts into 110v and then running 110 volt appliances you would be better off buying 12 volt kitchen appliances and etc which are plentiful. There are many dozens and dozens of different 12 volt kitchen appliances, household appliances, tools, beauty products, including 12 volt heaters, 12 volt swamp coolers/evaporative coolers, 12 volt refrigerators and the list goes on and on etc. There is a great number of 12 volt TVs with built in DVD CD players for RVs. Most electronics design for household use also run on low voltage around 12 volts. They have a built-in step down transformer with a full wave bridge to change them from 110 volt AC down to 12 volt DC. From household current down Automotive/RV current. Most RVs have a lot of 12 volt lighting throughout the RV and you can put a 12 volt outlet by each 12 volt light fixture to give you more access to 12 volts for your different appliances throughout the whole RV. And again by avoiding using an inverter your batteries will stay charged a little longer. Most of the time I would have no use for an inverter generator except on very rare occasions. And people like to steal them in broad daylight, even while you're traveling stuck in heavy traffic to run up and grab them off your vehicle. you can also charge your onboard batteries a lot faster by running the tow vehicle engine then you can by running a generator anyway. I have also heard a lot of people having frequent problems with their generators breaking down at the worst times. I have seen a couple of other people mention this also.
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing we use 120 volts for are the traditional appliances like, A/C, Microwave, hair dryer, etc. We also have a bunch of computer stuff. While I could convert everything to 12v, that causes problems when we need to take advantage of a hotel, or when we visit friends. The last thing I need is more adapters and cables. The efficiency loss through the inverter is solved by having adequate capacity and charging. 600 AH keeps us powered up for quite a while, and 80 amps of charging from the truck gives us a solid source of power.

Well, ingenious method of holding up the water jug. ;) I'm new to your channel and wonder if you've had the opportunity to travel within Canada yet. I ask because you are dependent on cell service and have already rigged up your camper accordingly. For us U.S. RV'ers, Canada seems a tough nut to crack when it comes to finding reasonably priced cell data service. (I'm referring accessible areas, e.g. cities and larger towns). Arranging the American provider to allow Canadian access for a small fee is the easy part; finding a Canadian vendor with an affordable data package has, so far, been impossible. Any thoughts? And you both do a very nice job here. Best wishes to you.

You two are funny. I’ll subscribe. Good video. Thanks for the video. So the parks you are waiting on will charge your battery bank running from your truck alternator? Is that when solar does not work ? Or in addition?
@Stonyboot
@Stonyboot 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing and leaving a comment :) And yes, the alternators on the truck (dual 220 amp) will charge the batteries when the truck is running. This will help us recharge and take advantage of a huge power source that currently sits unused. Since our power needs are high and the roof is small, 600 watts probably wont keep up with our demands. However, they will reduce the rate at which the batteries get depleted. Our batteries currently give us enough reserve to go 3-5 days on a change, the solar should extend that to 5-8 days. We rarely boondock longer than 5-7 days without driving, so when we do drive, it will rapidly recharge the batteries and get us ready for our next stop.

This is an uncommon but excellent question. It isn't a big issue for us since we are in constant communication with friends and family. One option you have is to use location sharing through google maps or other tools with a trusted friend or family member. There are several "real time tracking" tools out there that would allow someone close to you to know your exact location all the time. You could setup a schedule where you check in with them at a certain time each day by text message, email, or phone call so that they know you are OK. If you don't have someone that could fill that trusted friend role, there is a HUGE RV community online and in person that you could connect with and build a network for safety. Also, most cell phones have the ability to send a text message with your GPS location to someone. Lastly, if you are going to be someplace without cell service, you can either let someone know where you are going and when you will be back or look into a Global satellite phone so you can always stay in communication. I you need any help finding information on any of these topics, just let us know. If anyone else reading this message has any input on this please leave a comment!
