I've probably saved $2,000 thereabouts this past summer for parts which cost $300. $200/ hr shop cost, and the person doing the work gets 10% of that, ain't right either. And years ago when speaking with my mech at Nissan he informed me that even though his experience allows him to complete a job in 30 minutes, if'n their internal repair manual indicates that the job should take 1 1/2 hour, he still has to charge that 1 1/2 labour charge, which rounds to 2 hours. He’s absolutely right about the Mercedes. I work for an auto group and we own several MB dealerships. Since moving their factory to Mexico, they aren’t built like my mother’s 30yr old E320 that was built in Germany. The new ones have a lot of recalls and annual maintenance cost is ridiculously expensive.

Another one to look out for: If you buy a 4runner, make sure it doesn't have the XREAS suspension. It's hardly beneficial at all and when it fails, it's upwards of $5,000 to replace. Most everyone who has to replace them goes with traditional shocks and struts. Much cheaper and give the same ride quality.

To be fair, BMW is a luxury performance brand. Not defending them, but if you buy a luxury car you can expect the cost of maintaining a luxury car to go along with it. Why does that mean you shouldn’t buy one? As for them always breaking, not sure where this comes from as Consumer Reports ranked them in the top 10 for reliability for 2023. It’s the mid-tier brands that are more in most people’s price ranges and is of good advice in this video. Nearly every vehicle and engine can last a long time so long as you’re responsible with oil change intervals and the regular maintenance checks. You know, the things ANY vehicle would regularly need... Your car will cost you more if you refuse or ignore taking care of it.

Scotty, I recently read a car magazine (forget which one) and two journalists employed by the magazine wrote an article in which they priced the ownership of 5 luxury vehicles. There was an Audi, a BMW, a Lexus, a Mercedes and I forget the fifth one. They carried out this experiment for four years. They totaled the ownership price of each one - the purchase price, insurance, registration, fuel, servicing, etc. At the end of four years, the cheapest car to own was the Lexus. The next cheapest was the Mercedes - at FOUR TIMES the cost. Interesting article.

Having had a past life working as a service writer for some auto repair shops. Those brands are either money pits and you will get more headaches from them than actual enjoyment from driving. Also I would never purchase a preowned BMW or Mercedes unless the previous owner was a saint and actually spent the money and time on the maintenance and care of the vehicle. A good majority I would see come in were owned by real cheap skate owners, which was understandable due to the high price of maintenance/repairs.

I had a BMW 528e. It had the engine rebuilt twice, once under warranty, and once out-of-pocket. The first time it was burning through a quart of oil every 500-600 miles. This was documented by the time the vehicle had 20,000 total miles on it. They couldn't figure out what was wrong, so just bored out the pistons and put in new rings. The second time the head cracked, with no reason given, except that it got "too hot." Given that there was no problem with the radiator or cooling system, it is not clear why it got "too hot."
