Over engineered money pits? So what else is new with German cars. A friend of mine had a German convertible in the 1990s, and the bushings for the convertible top would slightly wear and they'd have to be replaced or they would bind, he had a whole bag of these bushings. Remember the car commercial joking about German cars about how one must first shim and rebalance the wipers blades? It goes back even farther than that. My grandfather was the type to try a lot of different kinds of cars, and bought a Mercedes, and if you think some domestic or Japanese brands are bad about finding ways to weasel out of honoring warranty coverage (in my experience, both Japanese and the one American brand I've had all do a pretty good job with warranties) you've obviously not had a German brand. Oh, BTW, my boss is German but working here as a permanent resident alien, and he absolutely despises German cars, won't touch them with a ten foot pole, thinks that German engineering is greatly overrated and that so many Germans think it is so good he chalks up to a national delusion. Germans do seem to be very good at deceiving themselves. Another instance of it was the Audi brake problem.

And all these people crowing that we should be more like Germany or Europe, but Germany would be among the 5 poorest US states if it were a US state, and that was BEFORE their current economic malaise. Pretty bad when the wealthiest European country is that poor, and France is even worse.

I worked at German new car dealers in the Seattle area for 20 years before I retired in 2014. I was continually amazed by the constant, very expensive issues that customers complained to me about. Then they would buy another new one! The basis of a lot of the issues was the horrible design and quality of the Bosch parts in the electrical systems. I could write a very long, very boring book about the disasters I witnessed, and the cartons of Kleenex I dispensed to upset clients. I drove shuttle van, and was on a first-name basis with hundreds of customers, who I saw literally every month. When I would gently suggest that they might have better luck with a Toyota or Honda, these geniuses would respond "I don't like Japanese cars". BILL

I had a 1975 VW Dasher I bought brand new and it was the most UNRELIABLE car I've ever owned. Why you ask? 2 words: ROBERT BOSCH. Everything electrical crapped out at least once: alternator, voltage regulators, sensors, and a wiring harness that smoked at about 1K miles out of warranty. This is without mentioning broken brake adjusters, A/T vacuum modulators, and sundry other items. I once voiced my anger with Bosch quality - or, more apropos, the lack thereof - in a dealership once. I said that the Germans must have lost the WW II tank battle at Kursk to the Soviets because all the German tanks had Bosch electrical systems that broke down. I saw 2 prospective customers leave the showroom and I was then asked to leave in no uncertain terms. Well, I was happy that I cost them a sale, anyway.

Toyota, Honda, Mazda-- most reliable. Can you detect any common trait? Can you tell which brand new compact SUV I just bought late last year from a foreign company that was made in that country for under 34k MSRP? Hint #1 : Not Korean. Hint #2 : Not a small 1.5L engine matched to a turbo -- yeah, that should last! 2.5L 187HP, naturally aspirated, Hint #3 : Not a CVT transmission.6-speed traditional tranny. AWD, of course. Hint #4 : Moonroof, 19" wheels, Red leather seats. Beautiful interior, so quiet. Hint #5 : On the dealer lot, picked up one week later. Hint #6 : Soooo.. much fun to drive. I love everything abou it! Answer: 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon edition. After almost a year of driving it, there is nothing else that I would rather have. (ZOOM, ZOOM!)

Scotty, I enjoy your channel and appreciate you sharing your vast knowledge. Question: given that the US is by far the largest consumer of oil in the world. And that a whopping 68% of that oil goes to transportation. Is it not worth it to wean us off of fossil fuels, even if that costs money? If your answer is yes, then do you have any suggestions other than EV’s to accomplish that? I’ve heard of H2, but I’ve also heard there’s lots of issues with that, too. What about modular batteries that are made in the USA and can be automatically changed? Then, convert gas stations into drive thru refueling stations, creating jobs and helping fight climate change.

You might like to comment why Australians are waiting years to pay at least A$80,000 on a 70 series Land Cruiser that is so basic, not particularly comfortable, vinyl floors, wind up windows 5 speed manual gearbox, fm am radio. How often do you have to repair a wind up window mechanism? Just this year they are dropping the 4.5 litre V8 turbo diesel that produces a whopping (sic) 151kw and replaced with their 2.8 litre 4 cyd. turbo diesel that puts out 150kw with a six speed auto gearbox. (all lifted from the hi Lux and Prado models). We'll see how they last but that was all done to meet government emission and consumption requirements.
