I dislocated my shoulder within the first 10 minutes of me trying to snowboard for the very first time in Wisconsin (Feb 2018). It took almost a year to heal, I g0t out once again in March 2019 and took a lesson, I was super scared to not get hurt again but still went up the green hill once to face my fears. And then I took to the same hill where I dislocated my shoulder last week and was finally linking turns. Really proud of myself and loving it. I bought a used board and boots and plan to get on the hill every week now. Thanks for the beginner's videos, these really help with technique and motivation.

Hey, this is great. I watched the beginner series with my son. I’m commenting because I like what you’re doing - I started snowboarding in 1984, got the first Burton Elite 130 and then a Cruzer 165, Burton Air - and raced and was one of the very first to build a half pipe and have a freestyle contest - picked up sponsorships here and there and went from resort to resort every winter and just loved getting turned away at ski hills and then looking all night for urban opportunities to light it up. I learned to snowboard when the sport didn’t exist and when I went to teach my son I didn’t even consider looking for help. After a couple hours on the hill my son was struggling, so I came accross your channel and watched it with my son. It was a fantastic enlightenment as watched how you teach beginners. It was really great to use your method and acellerate his learning. So once again, thanks - teaching this old dog new tricks is just awesome. Matt

Excellent tutorial (again!) ! 3:23-falling off the lift......here's how interested EVERY resort is in keeping newbies involved in the sport: not a one of them has an old chair set up in such a fashion as to provide a practice place to refine the chairlift-exit technique. Thus, many so frustrated by lift-phobia NEVER come back after their initial foray into the sport. It actually represents a considerable loss for the industry, "all-told".

This january it was my 3rd time I’ve gone snowboarding, and it was also my first time in the Alps. It was freaking amazing. I finally learned to relax on the board, hold a good body position and have complete control over my speed - I took it easy this week, no need to act like I’m a pro or something, just concentrate on what I’m doing and learning to trust my motion and flow. Your video’s have truly helped me, certainly the correct body stance. As a beginner, I also cannot stress enough how important it is to use your legs and relax your upper body. Don’t swing your torso around your legs, don’t swing your arms to make turns, but literally be one with the board underneath you. Man, once you got the hang of it, you’ll be hooked!

Many beginners feel like they don't need it (and honestly, the beginner areas are the most dangerous part of the mountains because beginner snowboarders struggle with turning). I took a bad fall off a half-pipe a few years ago on an ice patch and thanks to a helmet I was able to walk away from that alive (tore a hamstring though so I couldn't really "walk" away, more like limp away but no permanent damage, I went boarding again the next year).

What helped my girlfriend progress was going from arms out facing forwards and backwards, to arms out but elbows bent and hands on your waist. Then gradually progressing to holding hands behind her back so that she kept her entire body aligned with the board and used her whole body to turn instead of pushing with one leg or her back foot into each turn. Then everything else here as well. At some point, you're snowboarding ability plateaus - 3rd or 4th day on the mountain and it feels like you aren't getting any better because of the significant improvements from those first 2 or 3 days of being on your butt. Just gotta put in the time, dial in your turns, and learn to feel out the snow. Also, it never hurts to take an advanced or expert class at a resort. You could have been riding for a decade and still learn some good stuff. Great video lads.
@Nolimittt7 жыл бұрын
My mistake was over estimating my progress. I took a lesson or two with a private instructor on a VERY mild slope, practiced a bit going up hill myself on a beginner part, it had pomma and I couldn't for a life of me get on that. Then on the last day I took the chairlift to a more advanced run (it was blue, I should have been on green), fell so many times because as soon as I went a bit my speed was increasing too much, I was determined to get down, I'd walk a bit then board to part that flattens out and in mist of that I had a fall, that wasn't that bad comparing to many from others, but it broke my humerus (upper arm bone) really bad. Been in cast for 2 months, then physical therapy and I'm to keep training my arm for more months to regain strength and size. One thing I learned is I personally can't learn from videos, I understood it all but when it came to practice I need someone to guide me... So if you don't have really mild or beginners course, don't go where you shouldn't.

I grew up a ski kid, and both me and my sister after me were skiing from 3. When my sister was 4, she was still using the kiddie leash or some variation with my mom. Well, mom accidentally goes down a black diamond. Being a good mom, though, she just went slow and took most of the falls for my sis. Plus, it's infinitely easier to "bail" on a run on skis than it is snowboarding, because you can just "pizza" the ever-living shit out of it the whole way down.

I think one of the biggest mistakes that I used to make was not committing to an edge. I tended to ride too "flat" on the bunny hill and would get turned around because my edge wouldn't "bite" the snow, and so I was basically spinning out of control and trying to keep my balance. That's why I think it's a mistake to tell a beginner to ever let their board ride flat, even when pointed downhill. Until you know how to go in and out of turns properly, it's best to ride a slight edge at all times.

Leah Nguyen make the laces on your boots smaller with your shins. Really squish them down. Also use a kind of chest and hips out "proud dolphin" stance (thats what i call it anyway, haha... its shoulders back, chest and hips out) while keeping your knees bent. This will force more weight down onto your toes. Practice traversing across the hill, holding your toe edge, making as long a toe turn as you can. That will help you really feel it. It just takes practice. You'll get it! Also... relating to the video, keep your weight more forward! Leaning back on your back foot feels good when you're scared because you're leaning more into the hill, but it robs you of control. If you're having trouble controlling your toe edge, it's very likely this is part of your issue.

Amazing video! My son is 12 & an he’s a fantastic skier- he’s now wanting to transition to snowboarding 🏂, he’s had a couple of private lessons he said mum it’s completely different from skiing . Ppl have the misconception that the two are almost the same -- wrong !!! I think that snowboarding is so darn cool 😎. I sincerely hope he gets the hang of boarding:)

Some skiers will say the first mistake is learning to snowboard. What is the difference between a ski instructor and God? God doesn't think he is a ski instructor. How do snowboarders introduce themselves? “SORRY DUDE” What's the difference between a tele chick and a hockey player? The hockey player takes a shower after three periods. Three snowboarders are riding in the back of a car. Who is driving? A police officer. ...enjoy gaper day!

My friends took me on a double black run today.. 2nd time snowboarding. Scared shitless staring off the edge of a mountain. Did it anyway, and by god was it the best feeling overcoming that fear. Snowboarding is a drug, and I'm addicted.

I have huge problems with getting off the chairlift. I can practice riding with one foot for whole day but when riding on chairlift I always fall. I have no idea what position to take and how to jump off from it. I did try sitting at the sideway and trying to slide out, sitting sideway and somehow jumping off and sitting sideway and trying to push myself from the chairlift using the hand that is near the back of chair. I always fail to do this correctly and need to cralw like the bug so that others will be able to get off. I just have no idea how to make itwork out.
@benjaminkoenig7597 жыл бұрын
Stomp pads are essential. Push your back foot against your back binding. Maybe practice riding away from a bench for balance reasons? Stopping on heels is easier for a lot of people as well. I struggled alot on chairlifts but I (kinda) have it now. Hope you do too!
@spazzen7 жыл бұрын
I had trouble with chair lifts for ages, if you're bad sit in the outside seat as it lets you hold the chair longer and if you fall you can fall to the side so you're not in anyone's way. I'd always sit somewhat sideways and prep really early, so that i could have a while to balance while still holding the chair. And depending on what side i was on I'd be thinking about moving to the left or right with a toe or heelside movement as i always found it easier than just going forwards.

"How to fall" video. To avoid injuries. Particularly shoulder injury from using your arms when falling.

I love the "bad end/fall" demos in every segment, and 2:38 (with the correct posture at 3:03) was exactly what my instructor suggested I do. :)

+SnowboardProCamp one thing you showed but didnt directly talk about is to learn how to fall. Mainly, DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS DOWN when you fall. this can lead to some serious injuries for your hands, writsts, forearms, elbows, etc.

Makes me feel better about myself. Snowboarded for the first time yesterday and second time today, never fell when I got up and could turn and maneuver and had to jump a few times for rogue skis. Getting up was killing me though. Took me an hour to stand up at any one time.

#4 was always an issue for me for my first and second year to the point that I would NEVER heel turn and I would only toe turn and had to do 180s with it to keep myself from going off the path. I ended up kind of figuring out on my own the years after and I'm glad that this video covers that.

How about this common mistake. The way a beginner falls and lands flat on a hand bent backwards, which results in a common beginner injury. Such as, wrist sprain, forearm break even at a near standstill. I notice you do not land in such a way, you fall correctly on flat out forearms. Why do instructors fail to teach such an important safety lesson ?

AJ Maine Just snowboarded for the first time today. My instructor did cover it, and we did some practice falls, but when we were actually on the slopes I used my hands every time, mainly because I could reduce the impact of the fall with the extended reach of my hands than by waiting to land on my forearms.
