I have had Ozzy from 6 weeks to 8 years now. He is the complete package; loyalty, fierce protection of the house and slightly loony. We had a terrible time with aggressiveness toward other dogs when taking him to the dog park. I finally realized that it was best not to go and the aggressiveness subsided. He now looks forward to other dog encounters. Nail trimming has been his big trigger. He sees the clippers and freaks. I cannot figure out how to help him, so we have to have him sedated for each trim. Ozzy is as much a family member as my wife and myself. He is super smart, has an amazing vocabulary and keeps us on our toes. There is never a dull moment and wonder if he actually sleeps.

Got my 2nd Heeler after I retired, took her out every 2 hours, praised her when she went, house trained in 2 days! Put her on a leash and walked her around the farm. When I let her loose on my 5 acre farm, took treats with me, called her when she came, praised and gave her treats. She's now 2, comes when I call her, never goes in the house, has free run of the house. YOU CANNOT PUT A DOG LIKE THIS IN A CRATE ALL DAY! They need to run, and have interaction with you, if you can't commit to that, don't get a Blue Heeler!

Good points - all very true concerns! Crate 'em early and crate' em often (and feed/water only in their crates!). Retractable leads are only for advanced dogs, or a rushing do will injure your shoulder when he hits the end. Finally - regular sit/stay/come/down/heel/fetch/"LEAVE IT!" practice are all true cornerstones of training - and often lifesavers.

It's great to see other countries appreciating Australia's working dog breeds. My family have had heelers for about 70 years. We were cattle people from Queensland. But when we got our first "bluey" as a pet, we made the same mistakes as you guys. Too. Much. Freedom. They definitely need boundaries and consistency. Obedience training fixed most of our problems. I would love to say we all lived happily ever after, and for a while we did, but my little mate developed a brain tumour @ 16 years of age and died last year. I really hope you and Louie have a much longer innings than that. Best wishes and enjoy your relationship with your lovely dog.

Oh yes !!! I made those mistakes . Wow ! I have three dogs . My oldest is a blue heeler Sheba inu . He’s blue !! And I have a female blue heeler , my other dog is a black lab / Pitt bull , aka labradoreable !!! My female is two years old smaller than your Louie ! He’s a big boy . Honestly I prefer to not put her on a leash . If I have to , I use a good harness that attaches in the front at her chest . She won’t pull when it is on . I enjoy her having freedom to be herself . I love her energy and her spirit . She comes to me when I call her . She will tag close by me off the leash . I love your dog and how you are doing with him !! He is a saint of a blue heeler !! With the best dog mama ever!!

These are all VERY good tips. I have a ACD and a GSD. I made the harness mistake as well. Got pulled all over the place. Switched to a Sprenger Prong Training Collar while out on walks, it was like a miracle! No more pulling! The prong collar was actually better than a choker, they don't cut off the dogs air supply if they still pull like a choker did. I no longer needed to use them after a few weeks, except for a few times to reinforce the training when they started pulling again. Just make sure you only use them when you are actually training and don't keep them on all the time. I actually don't keep any collars on my dogs when we are not away from the house for safety, since they play very rough together.

I adopted a blue heeler/ shepherd just yesterday. Over night he changed into another dog completely, mine just came this way.....I will work with him.....but it's like I have a 3 year old that is really a 10 week old puppy. I am looking at videos and researching to train a 10 week old dog. This is a rescue dog from Texas and I honestly think he was a street dog, he has been taught NOTHING........i did find your video really useful......before another night goes by I will have a crate for him...I think that is #1 on my list!!! He is great as far as friendly and he is sincere....he is worth training. Thanks for your video...I can't wait to watch the rest to learn...it's the first time I have owned this breed!

We got our first Blue Heeler first week in December 2019! We also live in Northern Wisconsin where it winter almost 9 months out of a year! Absolutely NO issue with our Bear and snow either! He loved jumping from snowbank to snow even at 12 weeks old!! Ihave to say we are AMAZED how smart this breed is......can’t wait until SUMMER to introduce Bear to Lake Superior beaches!! ❤️

Love your videos. I am considering a blue heeler for my next dog. You are helping me make an educated decision. Just wanted to mention that the harness has its place in tracking training and in training a disability service dog. My service dog understands his real job just kicked in as soon as his service harness goes on him. But I still also put a collar on him for control confidence. And my sport dog that tracked understood what was expected when the harness went on. Anything to make life easier.

I just rescued a 4 mth old Red heeler mix 3 days ago 😅 He's so cute and has a very friendly personality for the most part. The first day he came home i used a leash and collar. He was so glued to me that let him off leash and he still behaved amazingly. Fast forward to today I'm using a harness and I tried both the extendable and regular short leash and now he's doesn't move or walk lol. If i take the leash off or just let it drag on the floor then he moves and starts sniffing and exploring and generally being good but yet completely ignores me if I call him. I had to carry him up the stairs after a short walk lol I can see that it's him being stubborn and trying to exert his independence. But after watching your video I can see that it really has a lot to do with the breed so I'm going to try the collar tomorrow. Thanks for posting all your vids, very helpful ❤️

I tip my hat to you, you have been pretty honest and open with your mistakes with owning a heeler (I didn't know it was your first dog, you picked one hell of a breed to start with) and I have been critical in some of my comments. Please keep making videos, about acd's, it's good for the breed..... just don't make them to popular...... we don't want this breed destroyed, like so many others........ pitbulls are America's dog,...... they used to be 45, to 60 pounds, strong, stable, and bomb-proof. Now look at them, bad breeding, bad breeders, and owners who treat them like ghetto jewelry

ACD’s are ridiculously habitual as they age. Tilly is my third Cattle Dog (she’s 12 now) and now knows that after I’ve had my morning coffee it is breakfast for her. She snores on her pillow until I put the coffee mug down, then up like she hasn’t been fed for days!

I just recently came across your channel and liking all of the videos I see so far. I have two Heelers one that is a 7 month old puppy. It's also very easy to give them to much freedom in the Summer she had the ability to come and go to the backyard which made potty training very easy because the back door was always open. However when the weather started to get cold she freaked out a little bit and we had a few accidents.

I, too, own a Heeler. I love the breed. Mine is very well behaved and isn’t too aggressive. Using a harness is not a mistake to make when training a dog in general. If they get too far, and you try to reel him back in, the pressure will be on his chest where he is stronger instead of the pressure being on his throat which happens with a collar. Queensland Heelers are VERY active dogs so I do agree with you about not getting them in the winter if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow so they can get some exercise and play and be a puppy. But my dog never had boundaries or a crate and I have always used a harness and extending leash with my dog, and I have no problems with him whatsoever. The “mistakes” all depends on the dog’s own personality and how the owner trains them. There is no right way or wrong way to train a dog.

Thats what I was thinking , so many say not to use harness but I notice they clip the leash on the back which is prime position for pulling work. Ive always known clipping leash on the front stopped pulling and harness save necks. Would you say pulling work is a great job for ACD?

Heelers are bright. Clicker training with positive reinforcement is the way to go. As said in video, crate training is a must. Makes a safe place for dog to relax when overestimulated. Also makes boarding easier when you go on vacation.

They are a very stubborn and dominant breed, I've had many dogs before but never a blue heeler and she is my husband's dog all the way and it has taken me over the course of the year we've had her just to get her to really begin to listen (knowing she was still a puppy and mentality wise shes just a small kid at the time) but they are amazing dogs once you get them to where you want them to be at!! She might be his dog but I do love her to death and she is Amazing with our daughter and all babies😍

I relate to this so much. My heeler is my first dog too. I made some mistakes with him too that i had to deal with as he got older. I took him everywhere with me, so he is great with people when in public, but I don't have people over often so he doesn't have a great attitude about people in the house. He knows now that he can't be aggressive to guests now, but I don't think he will ever be friendly when I have company. He just sulks at my feet and gives the stink eye to everyone. I will say, a harness can be a great training tool if you have a pull harness since it stops them from pulling you. Rocky, my dog, pulled so much with the collar as a baby and it can be damaging to the dog's throat, but with the pull harness he learned not to pull so quickly, now he trots at my side no problems.

I'm no dog expert but it's still just as likely to pull with a collar on, it will be just a bit more uncomfortable. What I did to make sure my dog stays by my side is to treat everytime the dog walks by my side and not pulling me. My cousins pitbull is a nasty puller and they even got her a prong collar and it dosent do shit she still pulls

You'll do better with the harness , make sure you establish control and make tugs on leash while making your stop noise, on every onset of disobedience do the same thing tug and make sound. Eventually it will click. Make sound and tug at every movement you don't like. Practice whenever and always allow some freedom. I trianed My pup without leash before I leashed him. Best way to go , hard to go in reverse because he will want to escape totally.

Our dog, Argos, actually lived with relatives (with small children) for the first 6 months of his life. He was crated the majority of the time inside because he would, surprise surprise, nip at the kids and try to heard them. They did not walk Argos but kept him on a tether when he was outside. Now the thing about Argos is he poops off the beaten track. He poops in bushes or off to the side by a fence. So he wouldn’t potty outside in the limited yard space he had access too, but would potty in his kennel. Partying in his kennel meant he got to get out of his kennel. He also wasn’t socialized. Our relatives were inexperienced dog owners who just wanted a cute puppy. My husband and I are both experienced at training dogs from when we were kids and on. So we offered to take Argos in to train him as opposed to seeing him dumped at a shelter. 2 months in the conversation went “He’s making great improvements, but I think he will always nip.” “Alright, just go ahead and keep him.” We still struggled with behavioral issues for a few years: aggression, energy (I discribed him as the Looney Tunes Taz tornado with arms and legs coming out all over), and distructive behavior. Now at 9 (starting around 5) he is such a wonderful dog. Another change in the last few months is our other two senior dogs passed away. I always thought I’d adopt another, older heeler, however, he loves and thrives as an only child. I wonder how the first few years of his life might have been different had we had him from the start. But I love this crazy, loyal, loving dog with all of my heart! *Side note, for leash training I’d also suggest looking into a Gentle Leader. It’s a harness the slips over their nose and around their neck. They don’t like it at first because it sits on the sensitive bridge of their nose, and they will try to scratch it off. But for pulling, when they pull they get the pressure on the bridge of their nose causing them to naturally want to stop pulling. Now sometimes instead of pulling, my smart little booger will slow fall behind me and try to slip it off very sneakily 😜 I always say they are too smart for their own good. But because of the gentle leader he is a pro at “stay by me” (heel) off leash, with a collar, or with a harness. Thanks. Love your videos.

I was given an 8th month old blue healer because she got to big for their two yr old and don't think they knew she would nip the two yr old cause she was playing or knocking her down. she had came over when I was at my friends and she took to me from that day forward. The neighbor said he couldn't find a home for her and asked would I take her if I wanted her cause he knew I would care for her and I truly do so. I had a severe back surgery and constantly in pain but she sleeps beside me and all I could do recently was get up and feed and water her and pick up puppy pads. It was like she knew I couldn't do much more at the time. She really loves me but a month ago she chased a car and was hit and I stayed up day and night to care for her and I think she was repaying the favor because I had to go three days without my meds. She is really really smart and seems to check on me when she hears me hurt. I have a military harness for her and when I walk her I lead and giving her military commands. and trying to teach sign so I won't have to give her vocal commands she is learning. when I am able to go back to teaching survival techniques I will definitly have her in videos. Everyone says I really done a miracle in caring for her since her accident. We definitly were paired perfectly together.

I made a lot of the same mistakes with my red heeler. However I found using a harness can be very useful if you find the right one for your dog, we went through so many finding the right one. Also we have a martingal collar for when we go in stores and that keeps her at more of a heel with "loose" slack as in I don't have to keep the leash super tight for her to stay next to me... anyway you seem like you've done an incredible job raising your dog I understand his breed can be a handful but you're rocking it!!

yes I definitely understand a lot of these problems but my heeler is already six months now. he’s actually done so well I have done everything that I need to. he has become really great he just needed consistency time and exercise exercise really important with these dogs because they have so much energy. But they’re very smart and the only problem I’ve ever had with him was his stubbornness so yes I had to take a lot of time to train him for him to listen. He’s been so great for only six months he’s such a good puppy and I’m so proud of myself 😄I think that in the future he will be even better dog as long as I’m consistent and I exercise him he will be healthy/happy overall-and you wanna healthy dog if you want them to live longer.

I never heard of the Australian Cattle Dog or BH till I saw this little guy.. had an OE Sheep dog which is another Hearder and knew I liked that type of dog. He is now 8w old, and the 3rd day as my new dog. At first, I thought he was too young.. the first day he was very nervous, afraid of everything.. wouldnt go outside unless I dragged him. But Potty training was Instantaneous.. It's mid march, chilly to 70ish. I just put him out every 2-3 hours. Make him stay for 3 to 4 minutes, and whamo! No accidents yet, even over a full 8 hour night. Hopefully he'll let me know when he wants out as things progress.. No Crate yet, but this lil guy is Rambuncious as heck.. He likes Paper, Wires (!), and Towels (Tug of war), some baby proofing req'd! He has no real desire to explore the house or outside yet, but that's coming very soon. I need a crate. Once outside, and out of sight of the door, This Lil guy will follow me anywhere.. even at a slight run. Could be out of fear of getting lost? BUT, I Can't pull him an inch with a leash.. Instant 4 wheel brake lock. Love his independence, but going to be an issue in public w/o a leash. Needs leash training, but real kewl he follows me! Riding in the car his mouth starts frothing after several minutes.. then he starts barfing. The third ride its getting better. Obviously it's fear. He wants to look out now whereas before he would try to hide under my feet as I drove! I think he'll get over it and really like going for a ride. This guy should be easy to train to fetch! Always wanted a dog that would bring it back to me. So far a very Unique puppy to me.. he's a total pleasure to have. Highly Recommended breed. By the way, this Breed is the Bad Ass dog in the Mad Max Series! a Famous Dog Hero so to speak.. Made in Australia of course.

My blue heeler‘s name is BlueBell and the BIGGEST mistake we made with her was letting her think that crying means she gets let out of her crate. EVERY MORNING my day starts with a crying/ barking dog because she decided it was time to get up Also I completely blame my boyfriend for this because he’s a pushover 😂
@LizLife
@LizLife 6 жыл бұрын
Emilie Wallace omg I did that with Lou for awhile too!! He would cry every morning at like 6 am to be given breakfast & let out. I ended up ignoring him everyday until 9-10 am (when I actually woke up) and I got him into a routine where he’d wait for me and not bark to wake me up. They are such habitual animals so I try to give Lou new habits. ex. (Waiting for me to wake up and make the decision myself that he’s allowed to have breakfast & go outside ) . Thanks for sharing I hope more people open up about their mistakes/ what they’ve learned from their heelers!

Liz Life I would love to ignore her because I’m such a deep sleepier I could probably sleep through it but my boyfriend is a very light sleeper and like I said she’s got him wrapped around her little paw (she’s 4 months btw) and he’ll either get up to let her out or make me wake up

Emilie Wallace I’m literally having deja vu because my boyfriend used to do the same thing!! She’s young still, Louie learned to hold his bladder longer as he got older. I think as she gets older she’ll sleep in longer!

So we have a retriever/cattle dog mix he is about 9 mos we got him at 14 weeks. He is extremely territorial and protective of us and our house. He doesn’t like any strangers at all! He is pretty good on a leash but does get obsessed with certain people or if he thinks someone is chasing us. My biggest concern is just trying to get him more socialized and not bark at my neighbors kids when they want to pet him: ( he is so sweet but can come across as mean or aggressive form an outsiders view. Just looking for tips on how to train him better and make him have better manners also when we have company come over! By the way he is huge he already weighs 63 pounds😱looks like a small pony lol!!!

When potty training a puppy, besides going potty, give him a job to do outside like picking up sticks and put them in one place. He will be helping you and will just naturally get used to going outside.

I got my heeler Athena in the winter as well. She potty trained within a couple weeks but my problem is she is very high strung with lots of energy and because it was muddy and snowy out for the first 4 months of her life she could never go out and play. I'll never get another high strung dog like her in the winter again lol
@sarawingle
@sarawingle 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly your second tip was the exact Same my Rosie is 7 years old and we got her at the end of November when it’s starting to get cold out and we didn’t bring her anywhere cause her and our other dog (Roscoe - he’s a jack Russell) who would literally shake when in the cold so anyways we couldn’t bring them out because they would be freezing and now of course she can’t get enough of the cold weather and the snow she is now not as socialized as we would have liked her to be and is very timid during social interactions like full on has her head between my legs and her tail between her legs and is almost shaking, she can also become a little bit aggressive if it’s a puppy(Ik that is also her being assertive) and I mean she’s gotten a lot better I’ve started taking her out to more social environments but it’s still a pain in the butt having a scared dog😑

Wow you are cute 😎. The 5 mistakes you made I think a lot of new dog owners can relate to. I had my first dog in the winter too (ny) and we didn’t walk, socialize or potty train her like she needed. Now she’s barking at every and all thing. She listens to our commands though. I wouldn’t trade her up for nothing. Love her too much. We recently got 2 more puppies and I’m trying to do everything the right way now 😊.

I literally potty trained my heeler in less than two weeks by taking him out and i peed outside and kept telling him to go pee too! and it WORKED! so now i go take a piss with my dog outside! like true BFF's :P i have had a hard time socializing him because he gets spooked by new people and doesn't care for attention from other people. and twice when we go for walks other dogs have attacked us! so he really gets defensive around other dogs which i'm still trying to figure out how to socialize him without him fighting with other dogs. Any ideas??

Heelers need only one person. Socializing is important though, even if it is at least another dog now and then. Mine travelled to work with me at a hotel, so she interacted with a lot of people since she was a pup, but she still prefers to just be with me.

Eventually trained to respond to my speaking voice, a loud yell, a clicker which weaned to snapping my fingers, soft or very loud whistling. Different sounds for the basics. (sit stay heel) left, right and forwards and back. Most of the time she's painted against my pant leg. People say so cute, she's my shadow. More like velcro. Gave her her own couch. Now no one can sit on that couch unless they want to brush her. My mistake was brushing her every morning while I have coffee. Now whenever she hears the coffee maker she wants to be brushed. She does get burrs when they're in season.

I agree, I go on runs with my heeler so I use a harness so if something happens while at a high speed it causes less injury, and she has never had a problem pulling. The dog just needs to be taught from early on that when they are on a leash they are following you not the other way around.

I have three heelers. Several of your "mistakes" are personal to your dog. My pups potty trained with no issues in heavy snow. We live in the forest and the males have marked acres upon acres away but one would come back and one wouldn't. A shock collar fixed that in two days. Two of my socialized heelers love everyone....but one hates other dogs. My other one will growl at people but loves other dogs. They all have their own personalities and quirks.

Genealogical Historian San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society I think it’s good advice to potty train in warm weather just for the purpose of being able to get ready and leave the house more quickly and with more ease as you won’t have to spend time putting on gloves, beanie, boots etc.

katina smith. When brought up with other animals they're usually fine but as they get more mature they will want to be boss. You need to be firm with them, but they will not generally tolerate hitting and will normally bite you, They do respond extremely well to affection rewards (and food) and i have found mine will do anything to please you for a pat

Just one tip, if your dog pulls a lot never put him on a leash as it’s extremely bad for their neck and spine. If you use long line leash always use harness. If you don’t want your dog to pull, Instead I recommend using a front leash connection harness, it’s a harness you clip in the front so when you pull the leash they naturally turn back and it’s not applying any pressure on their neck.

I own a 7 month old Pitbull/blue heeler mix, he's my first dog, however I have had experience with fostering from my local shelter and petsitting. The more videos I look at concerning first time puppy owners, the more I realize how lucky I got with my baby. The only problem I had when he was younger was biting, I wasn't firm enough on not playfully biting on people that he has had a small problem of getting too excited and biting at people. He also is very independent and extremely smart. He's very protective of my family (Especially my younger siblings) and if we are in public and they walk away he gets very anxious. (He only does it in public, he doesn't have seperation anxiety.) He also tends to ignore commands if he knows I can't do anything about it. (Like if he runs a little way away and I call him, he knows I'm not going to run all the way to him.) All in all though, he's a great boy and I don't regret anything about how I raised him.
