I've been thinking about those big drills, I think the torque load of drill could be controlled by a spring loaded system on the actual drill body, that instead allows the spring to deflect the excess torque caused by binding of the drill, carpenter's are the same as every one else, they enjoy a good laugh at work, it may be at your expense, get used to it as you'll be doing the job for the next 30 years. When you've eaten too much crap, speak up for yourself, a jobsite is the real world, none of us will just let someone dump on us forever, don't be rude, but stand up for yourself. Life on the site will calm down, dirt is your friend, and if you ever get a sideways look, know what you did to make the money and that you are doing work others will never understand, even though it might be the roof covering their house. Peace

Great advice, as always. Those macho roto hammers are no joke. They used to break a lot of guys wrist in the past. Like Billy said, the jobsite is still the real world. You don't have to be picked on because you work in construction. Sticking up for yourself is always the best policy.
@gregbryant3826

@@unscriptedwithantonio Even small electric drills come with a torque arm. Everyone throws them away. If you actually use it it will let you overcome the torque of the drill and if it grabs the bit will slip in the chuck before you end up hurting yourself. Another key to drilling is pecking. If the teeth are full you aren't cutting anything. Move the drill in and out as you go to clear the chip load.
@unscriptedwithantonio
@unscriptedwithantonio Жыл бұрын
@greg bryant If you can find one of those arms on a job, you're a lucky guy. You're right. Most guys throw them a way.

@@unscriptedwithantonio actually I've seen the arm in use with hammer drills, I'm wondering why a spring system attached to the collar of the drill couldn't release the torque, as you apply pressure to the drill the spring would both be compressed and wound at the same time, and if the drill were to kick it would be released just within the collar.

I was terminated from the carpentry apprenticeship program going into my second year, due to letting the bad he say he say get to me. Ion play them type games, I get work done. The disrespectful comments that was being said I wanted to react but I couldn’t and it messed with my mental health to where I missed two days of class n 3 days of work that when they sent a letter through mail terminating me. I learn from it and will be back soon. Btw great video brother 💯

Thanks for sharing this. I'm currently looking for a new job after being out of work for a while. I like designing, making and fixing things and have enjoyed doing basic woodwork so I thought about learning carpentry. What puts me off is the thought of injuries, not being able to cope with the physical demands, early starts as I'm more of a night owl, and men being rude, sexist and aggressive. I experienced bullying in past jobs and it definitely messed with my mental health, it's a shame to hear there tends to be bullying and aggression in the trades. By the way you have a really good calm, professional manner. You'd make a great mentor, coach and manager.
@unscriptedwithantonio

This is a more aggressive line of work, to be sure. But I still find it rewarding and enjoy working with my hands. To be honest, bullying isn't really tolerated. All you have to do is speak up. The early mornings are just part of the job. Thank you for watching. I appreciate you.

Great advice on dealing with callous personalities in the trades, I've always considered their to be 3 major life pathways into concrete work 1. A felony 2. Military Service 3. Immigrating from Mexico If you're lucky, all your coworkers are Mexican dads who can barely speak to you but are polite when they do. Otherwise you're stuck with assholes who have only ever had to deal with worse assholes throughout their life and you just gotta buck up and adapt.

I hate driving and I fear of driving because I almost got into a few car crashes while driving. so I quit and now take pubic transit to get anywhere. Currently going through it with my career paths rn. I’m currently studying interior design but it’s not working out. I am fit 25 year old guy who’s done general labour work at 16-17 years old. later I worked in commercial kitchens while in high school until almost 2 year ago. Now I work in a plumbing supply showroom and don’t know what to do. Ive gained skills in sales and some plumbing knowledge but, I’m thinking about carpentry as a career because I love being creative and using my hands (I refurbish furniture as a side hustle). I haven’t really done a lot of labour intensive work in a long time and, I’m trying to figure out the right trade for me. Top two is carpentry, plumbing. Based of what I’ve said I just need some suggestions or resources to look into before committing to a path.

One danger you could add is uncontrollable variables such as unintentional negligence or inexperience of new guys on site, I can't count how many times I've seen guys get hurt on a scaffold that's passed inspection from not knowing how to properly conduct themselves on it or they altered and area and didn't flag things off properly.

I did bridge work and sewer work, and I can’t lie I really hated my life during that time. I was risking my life and sanity for what is considered good money but I say it’s bs. @unscriptedwithantonio
@unscriptedwithantonio Жыл бұрын
I've done a lot of concrete formwork. Walls, slabs , and high rises. It's fairly easy once you get the hang out of it. Lay-out is the most important part of the process. As long as you get that right. It's pretty simple. Concrete has the highest tolerance of error. It's like a quarter of an inch in some cases. And a lot of it gets buried. Concrete is less about perfection. It's more about can it hold mud, and is it at the right elevation.

To a certain point, yes. Banter is common in construction, and it's not always P.C... The homeless stuff is crazy. They have more rights than you employees. I had a guy run up on me and was threatening me. I was told pretty much run away. If you get caught fighting or getting into Confrontation with a homeless person. You most likely will be fired.

Its a white-male dominated industry(im white, just stating an important fact, as race does matter in the USA whether you acknowledge it or not) and it's a field with a lot of families who have been in the trades for generations, and they, as well as others, feel like they belong there, period, and it often becomes very hostile with and even amongst these types of guys, as well as the guys you mentioned(felons/military), and new hires are also a wild card since you dont know where they came from or what their deal is, yet. Conflicts can also go from verbal to physical really quick, or just instantly physical sometimes, especially where there's little to no supervision, and moreso on smaller jobs, and not always between strangers or acquaintances, but sometimes among friends or even family. Yes, family; seen it, experienced it. This field(the trades; carpentry especially) will push people, mostly men, to their/our mental and physical limits; far beyond what most jobs will push a man to. Can only speak for men as I don't know a woman's experience in the trades; never seen one. As difficult as it can be physically, it's even more difficult mentally. You have to navigate the waterways of your trade very carefully, and if done right, you will likely be ok. Either way, there will be challenges with people, as well as things, like you've never experienced at any other job. Good video.

I appreciate the insight. And I agree. Their is a lot of nepotism and conflict. This work is tough. But for me, it's worth it. I've had some pretty shitty jobs. And carpentry isn't close to the worse. Thank you for watching I appreciate you.

Im not sure what you mean. Carpenters get paid more than a lot of jobs. I don't remember saying they were the highest paid trade. As far as trades. They make more than masons, rod bucks, roofers, labors, and painters. They are in the top half of skilled labor.

Not a con or a pro. If there is one job no other trade can or wants to do the carpenters end up having to figure it out. Spent part of a season diving down after pumps and patching holes inside of a portable dam system with the hoe buckets. Sounds well and good until you have to signal a crane while treading water. EMBRACE THE SUCK!

It's not for everybody. Been in the trades for 11 years, always the same attitudes, stories, pitfalls. But you learn a lot, it can be very fun if you're young with thick skin. You walk away with a lot of useful hands on knowledge. I think I was one of the dirtiest guy on site: you just accept it. I always felt like a bum going into any store after work.
