@Intranetusa3 жыл бұрын
@@koreancowboy42 The formations in Red Cliff movie are mostly fictional or a very poor representation of real world formations. The Eight Gates Golden Locks Formation is a fictional formation invented by the Romance of the Three Kingdoms historical fiction novel. There was a real life "eight formation" used in the Three Kingdoms period, but it wouldn't have resembled anything in the movie. Reddit's Ask-historians subreddit has a recent thread about this in a post submitted by Iphikrates entitled: "The decisive battle in Red Cliff (2007) involves a sophisticated maze of moving infantry formations to trap enemy cavalry. Does this have any basis in warfare of the Three Kingdoms period?"

That shield wall in 'Red Cliff' has no spears and is one man thick. There's no way those cavalry will be stopped by that, they'll just pound straight through it.
@koreancowboy423 жыл бұрын
Has no spears? Yet they have halberds its the same thing also red cliff movie doesn't show it as effective due to the very poorly done unit sizes. Check out three kingdoms they have alot of extras and have done it even better. Also those cavalry would be stopped cuz no horse would even charge into an braced heavy tower shield that's firmly planted on the ground let alone with halberds and spears ready to jab at the horse or rider. They didn't do enough to make the formation very effective So again I'd recommend 2010 three kingdoms TV show on KZbin. I forgot which episode it was but I'll search for it and give you the number episode also that it depends which Playlist of the three kingdoms 2010 you choose from cuz it differs.

@@koreancowboy42 No those are Gē ('dagger axes') not halberds. And no, the don't function like spears/pikes, they're far too short (a one-handed spear can reach up to 8' long, and a pike between 10' and 25' long), plus they don't have a spike on the end. And no, those _single lines of men_ wouldn't stop a cavalry charge IRL.
@NephTheNeph3 жыл бұрын
The barrier for the horses attacking the shield wall wasn't the shield wall but the horses in the middle being killed by the arrows. If you attack a single point on a cavalry formation with ranged weapons, the herd will be divided at this place. Especially if the lucky survivors that didn't got killed at this place lack the bravery or (more often) the mere ability to "steer" themselves and their horses into the arrows to close the gap. After dividing the herd you could think of the shield wall as a river and the gaps in it are golden bridges. It's like the herd being divided by a barrier to be channeled on the only possible path. With most cavalry tactics based on triggering the horses flight reactions it would be really hard to regain control of the horse against this flight instinct to flee through these gaps and to force it to run into a barrier.

@VulpesChama3 жыл бұрын
A good defense is a good defense. The only thing that an offense can offer is that you wouldn't be in need of a defense at all. Though this offense vs. defense is not meant for in-battle decisions. If you've build up your formation, you've already committed your army to a certain strategy and changing this on the fly into the opposite is most likely to fail badly. In the case of the Wakandans, they play into the strength of their opponent here: Thanos' army is made up of numerous swarming melee fighters and what do the Wakandans and Avengers do? Giving up their formation. This battle is absolutely bad thought through and too much focused on the heroes instead of what these heroes stand for. The Avengers goal would/should be to lose as few people as possible, but by countercharging they allow their enemy to use his strength to his advantage (the opening of the formation offers the chance for Thanos' troops to actually swarm every enemy soldier individually instead of fighting a coherent army) The only thing that saves a lot of Wakandans is the sheer overpowerdness of Thor and other Avengers, which begs the question, why is the Wakandan army there at all? The only answer is: They're meatshields. The Avengers use the Wakandan army as meatshields.
@nunya31633 жыл бұрын
@@VulpesChama "A good defense is a good defense. The only thing that an offense can offer is that you wouldn't be in need of a defense at all." Not quite true. Even the best defense will be defeated given enough time. The good offense can deny the enemy the time needed to defeat that defense. Now in the case of Wakanda, they had relied on a very poor offense, and compromised their own defense.

I think something that needs to be taken into context with the Gungans though is that the whole point of their fight against the Trade Federation wasn't to win, but it was to hold out and distract. On that front they did their part and did it well. Not to mention the simple fact that despite not being overly exposed to outside technology, their own technology STILL held up against the technology superior Trade Federation. It was only the Trade Federation's numbers that actually allowed them to win that fight, not a inferiority on the part of the Gungan's technology. Their Faamba plasma shield generators stopped the weaponry of the AAT's and their personal shields did stop the Trade Federation battle droid's when their blasters hit the shields.

@@providedyeti1518 Thats a common misconception. General rule in medieval period was that frontal cavalry charges were extremely effective against infantry. Frontally an armored knight on his armored warhorse in tight ranks is almost invulnerable. In every case where cavalry was beaten by infantry they were actually hindered by terrain or got outflanked themselves. Take for example Agincourt that you mentioned. French expected an easy victory against outnumbered english and charged across muddied terrain. Besides they couldnt flank even if they wanted to since the field was flanked by thick forest on either side. Their ranks were broken up by massive longbow barrage which didnt cause significant casualties but still blunted the initial charge. They got stuck in a melee in the mud that hindered their maneuverability and then english longbowmen flanked from the forrest and shot at french knights point blank. When they ran out of arrows longbowmen joined the melee.

To be honest most war horses were never really trained. Most riders neither. Most cavalry formations instead use the horses' herd instincts. For example the V shaping. The riders at the sides are trained and "steer" their horses into the group. By doing so they hold the group together while they also trigger the flight reaction of the horses in front of them. Because they get pushed by the herd from behind and from the sides into the herds - means predator is behind and at the sides. The only way to survive for the herd is to run straight forward. By that the flight reaction can overcome the fear of the single horse when facing the shield wall. Because without that no horse would run into a line of animals which it would let on its back. Or in any other barrier. But this horses have nowhere else to go. And think about it. Adequate training for horse and rider together take from months to years. And all for a war horse that would serve about 6 months if it is a lucky one - many will not survive a single battle...

The 8gate formation may looks sily but it actually very effecitve formation from attacing enemy But as you guessed that formation is very hard to use First, you need to have more powerful ranged forces than enemy's forces because it's very Static formation Second, your army need to be 'VERY' well trained third, your army need even terrain

my concern about that statement is they are trying to diminish the racism experienced by people in the US by saying "it's not that bad" or "it's worse else-where". Even if he, or you, never say it, that is kinda of being outwardly implied.

In reality the Czechs had a shield master named "Ján Žižka z Trocnova a Kalicha". He used armored wagons for defence against knights and fully trained soldiers. (I'm not a Czech.)
@RaviPatel-cj9wd3 жыл бұрын
There are dozens of shield wall formation. Most of them taken from Ancient Indian history. The turtoise formation in red cliff, is actually The chakravyuh formation. The formation in Bahubali is also one of war formations called trident formation. Clearly this knowledge has been condensed in such a manner that we have to to literally piece it together to make sense. But overall their all brilliant formations in their own way.

I would just like to say that while Spot #4 was pretty crazy, it was mostly formed out of desperation, and not so much a crazy thought so much as "we don't have anything else"

They used to put blinders on horses so they would run into anything the rider wanted them to. They have to run along side and then shift into the line. Stirrups on a horse weren't in until Mongols came through with them I believe. I may be wrong about that though

@@RinoGato There are actual genocides being carried out around the world. I don't think the planet's even gone 20 years without one. Indians have a more dangerous version of 8 gate called chakravyuha. Its a maze which keep rotating. If you use normal entrance you will get trapped in it. Only way to broke into it and come out without getting trapped is to attack specific spots which will be protected by the strongest troops.

The 8-Gate formation is more of an idea than reality. There is no record of it being successfully executed or even attempted. It's also not a good strategy anyway.
