Never heard them called 'cheese head' sockets. I refer to them a 'triple squares,' or '12 points.' I just found your channel and I dig it. I'm a vw/audi and BMW tech. In my time at the few Volkswagen Stealerships, I did my fair share of turning wrenches on these. Definitely more reliable than the TSI engine. Should be quite the cool swap for the 944. The 5cyl sounds awesome alone. You paid under $300 shipped?!?!? You got a hell of a deal.

Those are triple square sockets. If it were me I'd replace that manifold gasket with an OEM Volkswagen gasket, they're not expensive. I can help you out with any OEM VW parts you might need.

you explained what the oil bloc is but you really didn't say, why you actually replace the factory part? as for the throw out bearing, how is it held in place now? is there a pipe on which it sits?

The new oil block is now part of the engine mount. The factory part with the integral oil cooler was too large. The slave cylinder / throw out bearing is bolted to the inside of the bellhousing

No, actually using coils off a 1.8T (if I remember correctly). They were the only ones low profile enough to fit under the stock hood without modifications

Been wanting to swap my 82' with an Audi AAN or ADU for a while, but this seems interesting !! its got me wanting to try it ! what did you guys do for engine harnesses and integration for the 944 ?

We partnered with Performance Electronics to develop a swap harness and ECU package. It integrates with the factory gauges on the late model 944’s but we haven’t tried it on an early car yet. Would be easy enough to modify if nothing else.

No, we developed a bellhousing for the swap. It does use the factory torque tube and transaxle though

The 944 requires the oil block for the mounts to work, as well as the valve cover in order to fit under the factory hood. The oil pan has to be extensively modified as well, which we are selling already done. I’m happy to price just the mounts and bellhousing for you but unfortunately it won’t do you any good without the other stuff unless you are planning to fabricate all of it.

@@nealmaha7889 Bellhousing w/ pilot adapter as well as mounts with oil block would be $1,420. The oil pan took an obscene amount of R&D as well as machining and modification. If you decide you need one of those, they are 975 with you supplying your upper pan for us to modify.

Reliable to 400 whp in stock trim with a turbo. Add forged pistons and rods and the sky is the limit.

@@BoostBrothersGarage lol you forgot to mention a LOT of other costly requirements for 400whp: TTRS or custom flywheel/clutch, head bolts, standalone management, custom exhaust manifold/turbo, injectors, tuning, many hours of custom fabrication, etc which are $5000-$7000 minimum. But you guys encourage unsuspecting “builders” so good luck in convincing idiots that this is a good choice. Reminds me of a guy turbocharging and then fully building a Camry 4cylinder because he got it for free from his parents years ago. Yeah he eventually got 450whp, only cost him about $14,000 and 6 months on a $3000 car….which in the end was worth about $4000. Great plan huh?

Gotcha... We are just going to use a 90 and a machined flange to adapt to the stock setup. Should be able to be used in a lot of different applications

09walon it depends on a number of things really. It could be done as cheap as $7k or cost $20k depending on what you do with the engine. My complete turbo build is on track to be less than $10k, and capable of 400whp reliably

From the conversations I’ve had, it would be extremely difficult. I don’t know CA regulations, but mainly because it has an additional cylinder, and almost certainly needs to run an aftermarke an aftermarket ECU.

I keep hoping for them to "wake up" to the idea that updating an engine to a more fuel efficient - more modern designed engine is actually better. My take on the laws is - they'd rather have us scrap the car altogether - for the pseudo "better for the environment" electric hybrid. Anyway, thanks for the very clear, well put-together videos. They are a huge asset to all of us weekend wrench warriors. (I work in film - i know what videos work and what doesn't!) Maybe I'll just ship the car to my nephew in Texas and make it an Uncle/Nephew project. Thanks again! @@BoostBrothersGarage

For instance a giant shiny turbo and intercooler is one thing, but will a stock looking engine that passes the sniff test get denied too? I know you want to get that thing in there and running but while it’s out don’t you want to throw some high compression pistons in there? Intergrated engineering makes a piston and baring kit for that engine. I know 944 fest

Engine swaps cost money, that’s just how it is. The LS swaps are the exact same way. We post spreadsheets with every item needed and pricing to be completely transparent. I’m not sure why you felt the need to post this same message on multiple videos when you clearly haven’t done your research or understand what it takes to swap an engine into a 944..

Lol, I’ve done swaps in 944s when you were probably in diapers (early 90s) and they were family correct (Audi 2.2T and VW VR6, you know, choices that make some sense?) Admit it, you mislead newbs into spending a ton of money by starting off with a cheap engine (07K) which then requires a TON of money to get any real power, because you’re vendors and connect with other “convenient options” vendors. Your main objectives are profit, not results

We have to do these production runs as group buys in order to keep the costs down so that people can afford them. You couldn’t be any more off base. Very few are 18-20, most are 30’s and 40’s. I specifically steer people away who are looking for the low cost 400hp route and have zero intentions of tracking the car. That’s not what this swap is for. Again, you are entitled to your opinion but if you look up the 07K swap development thread on Rennlist or have an opportunity to talk to our customers you won’t feel the same way. Good luck with your build, whatever it may be.
