Join me on a 5 day camping, canoeing and bushcraft trip on Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park. I setup various tarp shelters at camp, sleep by a lake for 5 nights and learn how to paddle a canoe on open water. In addition to this, I expand my bushcraft skills and learn how to incorporate bushcraft and canoeing when out on long distance wilderness camping trips. This is my journey into canoeing, and it is part of the Frontier Bushcraft Expedition Canoeing Skills course run by Paul Kirtley and expert canoe coach Ray Goodwin.

Nice film Mike. The pace of the film seemed to match the canoeing very well. You definitely got into a rhythm after a few days and this is apparent in the film too. Thanks for making the video as well as doing the course at the same time - no mean feat! I look forward to paddling with you again and that river trip later in the year ;-) Cheers, Paul

This video is amazing but also SOOO needed. Your a knowledgeable outdoors man taking a class to learn more. That's so important. So many people these days watch a KZbin video and think they can go out and survive in the woods. That's scary and dangerous. It's important and awesome that your showing your viewers to learn what you don't know before you go and do it. Love the content. Take care brother.

It was great to watch you discipline yourself and grow into a more weathered and more experienced bushcrafter ! Looking back at age 51 to when I was a teenager in the Boy Scouts of America I really do appreciate the trainers that I had .. a.k.a my scoutmasters , because you definitely have some pretty knowledgeable teachers for your trip and it sounded like you truly appreciate the whole experience... God bless you Mike ! 🎸 Rock on dude !!

Soooo well filmed and edited Mike! I can't imagine it was easy to film as well as you did and still take in the course. looked like a wicked time! My hubby and I do tons of canoe trips but there's always something to learn no matter how much experience you have, definitely learned a thing or two in this video! Thanks for sharing :) Cheers!

Quote of the day:"That is a nice boulder!" 4:52 ;). Canoeing is so relaxing, great vid! I love it! We were taught those canoe rescue techniques in high school, in swim class, in a pool. I live in Québec, I had assumed that it was standard, you know, part of everybody's school system. I see now it might have been a bit more specific to my region, which makes me like it even more. We had a folk story we were told when we were young called "La Chasse-galerie". It's about men who worked in logging camps, when the french colonized the Québec region. It was new year's eve and they were missing their families. They were too far to make the trip and be back for work the next day, but the devil made them an offer. He would fly them in and out, in a canoe, with conditions. They were not allowed to say God's name, they were not allowed to touch a cross and they had to be back in the canoe by midnight. The men decided not to drink to keep their heads straight, because if they disobeyed, the devil would have their soul. They made the trip, had fun, but on the way back, the canoe's "pilot" was drunk and almost clipped a church's cross, then almost crashed them in a tree. The turbulence made him start to swear and say God's name, so the men started to panic, afraid to lose their souls. They jumped on the pilot, trying to shut him up, but the struggle in a flying canoe was a bad idea. They crashed in a tree and all the men fell down to the ground. In the version I was told, the men woke up in the morning, face in the snow. They had crashed only a few meters from their camp, they were all safe and sound. It turns out, the pilot was the devil in disguise trying to cheat them for their soul. Wow, long comment sorry about that, love the vid, cya

Another one of your superb videos. I greatly appreciate the fact that you always mix in a lot of campsite and area scene footage. That gives many of us not-so-lucky city dwellers a chance to view the gorgeous landscape around you. Sure, I enjoy getting the bushcraft skill tips, but you love what you do, and it shows. Thanks a million.

Got the B.S.A. canoeing merit badge back when I was like 14 years old, those skills have served me well for many, many years. Glad to see you are learning the right way to handle a canoe. They are great little boats but you must respect them at all times.

It warmed my heart to see you learning so much about canoe-tripping from such skilled teachers. So many of us learn through trial and error and/or from people with marginal skills, only to become entrenched in bad practices and even unsafe ones. You took the wise course. Happy paddling, from here in Canada. Cheers, - Martin

Hi Mike: Growing up in the bush country of Ontario, Canada a canoe is part of my natural element. I'm glad you are developing this style of entering God's land. Glad to see you using some Nova Craft Canoes. I've been using a 15 ft 7 inch Bob's Blue Steel Special (only 41 lbs). for the last 12 years. Believe me after spending bug season for 70 years in the woods I don't go without a well screened tent. By the way your showing a good stroke. Welcome to total peace & fun. Brian 79

The canoe is a great new feature to the channel. I have to admit I've never known anybody that's taken canoe lessons. When we were teens, we just jumped in the canoe and just went and taught ourselves. Only requirement was to know how to swim. Nobody turned over, nobody drowned, nobody got hurt. I wonder if it's age that makes people so cautious.
