I head into the woods to learn basic beginner bushcraft tips from Bushcraft & Survival instructor Paul Kirtley. This long, informative video goes through a number of different techniques on how to use an axe, a knife, setup camp and light a fire. This video covers some very useful skills that can help to enhance your knowledge of Bushcraft and potentially help you in a survival situation. Myself and Paul also setup a camping spot to do an overnight. I opt for a hammock and tarp setup, as the bugs are still around. Paul goes for a ground sleeping setup with tarp overhead.

I remember my most memorable 'bush' coffee experience, was an overnight in the Amazon rainforest near Manaus (I say near, but it was about a 4 hour boat ride up the Amazon). In the morning our guide boiled water, added coffee to it (pretty much eye-balling it like you guys seem to do), stirred it and then let it steep for 10 minutes and. Then without out much fan-fair, he said "Coffee's ready," grabbed a piece of wood from the campfire with the end burning, blew it out and stuck it in the pot and moved it around a bit. That caused the grounds to drop. Honestly, with the novelty of that experience, the quality of the guide, and just the experience of having it in the Amazon rainforest made it the best darn cup of coffee I've ever had. Think of you often, Raul!

Notice how when he's carring the bare-blade axe away from where he cut down that dead standing bole, he's carrying the cutting edge angled *away* from his body. If he trips and stumbles, at most he'll get a bruise or minor cut from the axe, but the blade itself won't lodge into his body unless he fumbles it completely around. It's a subtle but important safety tip.

Another technique to get the coffee to drop is to lift the pot 1-2cm and just let it fall gently bak to the ground, learned this trick from a reindeer farmers boy in the finnish army, he called it "tötsäyttää" and he told me that the grains that have som air in them you need to "knock" out the air from them so they fall to the bottom

In Australia we spin the billy. You hold the billy with a locked, fully extended arm as Paul was doing at the end of each "drop" but you spin your arm a full 360 degrees using centrifugal force to keep the water in the billy. Does a similar job to this Norwegian drop technique. Also, I know this is a 3 years old video but this was fantastically detailed and helpful Thanks Mike and Paul.

Would love to have a Video from my father back in the 90's. He managed to chop locks twohanded (with two axes) while standing on Top of the pile. He was just doing it for the Show, but he had it. Brilliant video dude!! You can tell that Paul knows these things because he's been living it for a long time. there are so many little specifics that only years of experience can bring. You can really tell he didn't just read it in a book or see it in a video and then start talking about it like he's done it 100 times. He's really done all these things many times and you can tell. I originally thought "oh man...an hour and a half long? I'm probably not gonna watch the whole thing." I've watched the whole thing TWICE in 2 days. thanks for this, guys!

Send money to... Just kidding. I relate but it is a shame we have been conditioned to think the common knowledge that allowed our ancestors to survive should be paid for in this day and age. The governor of my state is trying to ban trapping among other survival techniques. It is an embarrassing time to be an American but I think it is ironic that America was founded to get out from under Europe and now I learn to live free by Brits, Aussies, Irish... Basically anywhere not the U.S.A.

I did the coffee technique and had one of the nicest yet quickest brew of my life, me and my mates were out on his private land which is nothing but fields and shrubs but we managed, in the morning I was the one making sausage and egg muffins, and I decided to make coffee as well. This is the best guide i have seen and used the info ❤
