Once you start sketching a lot, you'll start understanding the proportions. I would say learning basic anatomy, perspective sketch, drawing postures using shapes are few exercises that may help you improve

I'm glad there was a tip about color pencils used for sketching. I would often be hesitant about it since there are actual red and blue pencils more specific for sketching but now, I feel a lot more comfortable and confident to use regular color pencil. I just noticed a few weeks ago I bought Bristol VELLUM paper instead of Bristol SMOOTH. What’s the difference? How does it affect colouring?

Bristol vellum surface is a bit rough and works nicely with colored pencils. The Bristol smooth is great for markers usage
