Thank you so much for bringing Now and then, here and there to my attention with this video. I just finished it today and it has become one of my favourite shows. It is so well done, my only complaints are the one dimensional villain and hero (Which it kinda' works in this case because his viewpoints are constantly challenged) and the short duration, one or two more episodes would have done wonders for the show as the ending felt a bit rushed.

Credit for “getting” Zvezda as most reviews I read passed on it because they don’t “get the point” when the appeal is all over each episode and the point becomes irrelevant. It’s about charm and creativity. King of Bandits Jing is also a nice choice. Its one of those desert traveler with each episode in a new town kind of shows a la Saiyuuki Reload. It has this air of old times-ness to it. Like scooby doo. And it looks like an allegory for Purgatory

I THOUGHT i WAS THE ONLY ONE! Funny Story: All my anime DVD's were stolen during a break in, including my Jing ones, 10 years later, I walk into a local second hand DVD store to browse their selection and I see all 4 volumes, I joke that they must've been mine from back then, the clerk laughs and we get the boxes complete with inserts... the inserts... have my notes from art class scribbled on them... after 10 years... I got reunited with my DVD's. The guys at the shop let me have them for free when I explained the story (they were selling for like £1.50 each so no big deal) but it meant the world to me.

Random Fun Fact: King of Bandit Jing was one of the six series that has been aired on russian TV channel MUZ-TV alongside Chobits, Chrono Crusade, Full Metal Panic!, Gungrave and Ikki Tousen (what a wierd combination) back in 2005-2006. They were the reason I got really hooked up on this whole anime thing and Jing actually got a pretty big following in Russian Anime Community (back then, right now it's a fucking cesspool). This series also was the origin of my favorite quote that I still use till this day: Jing: Haven't you heard that women, like wine, just get better with age? Kir: Sorry, but I prefer fresh grapes.

Hmmm I remember loving the early part of Scrapped Princess when things were left more ambiguous and heavy... like, is the prophecy real? Is it ok to keep living as the "poison that will destroy the world?" Is my life worth risking against the fate of the world either way? But then the (first?) big reveal happens and it seems like it strips away all that ambiguity. The prophecy is real, and it's a good thing for her to 'destroy' this world. Was it really worth watching after that point? IDK, I didn't like the look of where the series was going after that.

As someone said in the comments, Juuni Kokuki/ Twelve Kingdoms is also a very good anime for you guys who like fantasy. You only need to have the patience to get through the first episodes (the main character start as a very annoying girl but then gets really awesome - it's actually one of the best character developments out there). Sadly it never really 'ends'. There's a big part of the story left unexplored. You can always read the light novels but it's not the same thing Still, one of the best fantasy animes in my opinion. I actually went after Scrapped Princess because someone said it had a similiar feeling, but yeah, no.

Known, huh? Could have fooled me. The ONLY people who've so much as mentioned Slayers on KZbin is WatchMojo...and I think we all know what the popular opinion is regarding them. Either way, whether or not something is actually known is heavily dependent on the person in question. Even I've heard of the last 2 on his list

Slayers characters have been popping up in Granblue fantasy though... that said, when I tried to get a friend into it they didn't watch past the first 10 episodes though I think its because they are more into sci-fi.

Well who outside of Japan would actually be familiar with Granblue Fantasy? And regardless if they prefer Sci-Fi or not, I suspect it has more to do with Slayers not possessing the typical shonen elements "popular" anime are praised for. DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc... Not that I'm surprised. It started in 89

If Avatar can be considered anime (i.e. subject to be recommended in this kind of list) I'd put forth the French series Wakfu / Dofus (Treasures of Kerub / new movies). I love the fantasy world Ankama created for these series and even though I dislike the game, the animation in the shows is very, very nice. Its probably one of my favorite fantasy series and it hits a lot of style points that I like -- bright colors, deeply fantastical setting, interesting mix of 3D and 2D visuals, great character designs, background art and special effects animation and awesome dragons. Who doesn't love dragons? Amazingly, Wakfu was almost entirely animated in FLASH of all things. It shows in some of the animation occasionally, but it didn't really detract from the visual style that much for me. Rather, its like they adapted to Flash and pushed it to its limits. Wakfu has two seasons with a third coming in 2017, and after successful Kickstarter campaigns to dub both seasons in English, I think its available on DVD/Blu-Ray (though very rare) and streaming on Netflix. The new Dofus movie, "Julith" is available on Steam, of all places. Heck, they even collaborated with Madhouse to make two movies (Noximilien l'Horloger and The Legend of Ogrest). Frankly the argument over what's "anime" or not is kinda silly at this point with worldwide studio cross-pollination becoming a thing.
@raret46 жыл бұрын
yeah, wakfu is anime as well
@Inufan756 жыл бұрын
Neither of them are anime. Anime=animated series/movie from japan (or eastern asia if you want to be a bit more generous). Every other definition would lead to TONS of cartoons, marvel/dc/disney stuff also being anime or a lot of anime not being anime anymore.
@raret46 жыл бұрын
This will be my last comment here on this video, cause i'm not here to argue. I'm just here to state facts. Wakfu is anime. If the creators call what they make anime, then it's anime. If we went with the definition you stated, then that would mean if the creators of spongebob moved to Japan, and made spongebob, then spongebob would be anime... Since anime is a noticeable style, anything matching this style format should be considered anime. Also honestly, i wouldn't mind if some disney things are called anime. Afterall, Donald Duck is the reason for the manga/anime art style. Look it up xD
@Inufan756 жыл бұрын
RareTV so if the creators of lord of the rings would call it anime it would be one? Or to take your example, if the creators of spongebob would call it an anmie, then it would be one? By that definition anything can be an anime and there would be no difference between cartoons and animes. You dont become japanese by moving to japan. So no, if the creators went to japan, it wouldnt become an anime. But if the vast majority of episodes were directed by japanese, than it would be one (and when im talking about japanese, i dont mean migrants). There is no specific anime style. Aku no hana is completely different than one piece, which is completely different than kemonozume, which is completely different tha panty and stocking etc. So yeah, both of the points you stated are simply wrong. There is no technical meaning like specific art style, themes or anything like that to the term "anime". Its simply a regional thing. Its the same as with manga/comics (/manwha and all that other stuff).
@Mithrapas6 жыл бұрын

I always believed Verena's skimpy outfit was meant to show the contrast between her apparent physical age and her "actual" age. Much the same way Mina Tepes is often seen full or partially nude in Dance in the Vampire Bund. Both characters look and often act like children, but in reality, they are very old and their innocent child act is just that....an act. Yeah, in some part it's Loli Fanservice, but anime almost always includes metaphorical symbolism like this in some manner.

Trust me there are no skeevy shots or depictions that try to sexualize an underage girl. Even the transformation sequence which is usually sexual ends up being adorable. If Avatar is an anime then anime doesn't mean anything and shouldn't be used as the word. Anime isn't an artstyle, visual style, story elements, story structure or directing style (which by the way Avatar draws more from the West in all regards minus the visual style). It should refer to animation produced in Japan for Japanese audiences because otherwise it becomes so broad as to be indistinguishable from the larger medium it belongs to, animation.

My question is, why do you watch anime? Is it because it was made by and for Japanese audiences or because of visual style, directing style, and story elements? Wouldn't deciding if something is an anime off of everything else you mentioned help way more as a defining term?
@TheCormacLinehan7 жыл бұрын
In psychology, there's a theory of categorization of human thought called prototype theory (and it's generally pretty accepted). Something is perceived as belonging to a larger class of things when it shares enough features with most members of the class. For example, a robin is a really easy to identify member of the "bird" class of things. So a robin would be a prototypical example of a bird. But a penguin would be a lot harder to confirm or deny as a member, since it doesn't share a lot of the features we normally attribute to birds, e.g., "can fly, has feathers, eats seeds, etc." But it shares the essential features like "descended from the same ancestors, has a beak, lays eggs, etc." I feel that (given that animation is often done in Korea, and animators are increasingly aware of their international audience) the features you mentioned are not necessary, but simply "the norm" for anime. Avatar shares enough features with the prototypical anime that it could reasonably be considered one.

As amusing as the bad 90's dub for Nadia is, it only goes for like 9 episodes......The dub produced in the early 00's however is pretty good imho. A little rough early on a they used actual children for the leads, and Jean's accent is iffy at best early on, it really does grow on you.

How can Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water be considered a hidden gem? It was one of the first anime I've ever seen, back in my college days. And I'm pretty sure that it was quite popular back in the day, esp. since it was directed by Hideaki Anno. Is it just too old now that many younger anime fans haven't ever heard of it? But wouldn't younger fans of Hideaki Anno's more recent works (such as Evangelion) look up his previous works?
@Turnajon5 жыл бұрын
@@antonyshannon2276 I agree. The dub of NADIA by ADV is very underrated. It's far superior to the Streamline dub. As far as Jean's accent goes, while I did have a bit of trouble with it, he grew on me after the first four episodes. By midway, he really got the hang of it.

*HERE'S ANOTHER GREAT ONE THAT YOU WILL BE SHOCKED IS GOOD! This one is a TRUE hidden gem, not only is it not well known, it has a stupid title and on the surface just looks like huge fan service!* First I want to preface this that I am SUPER picky with my anime. The smallest flaws bother me relentlessly to the point where I hate so many well loved shows. I hate fanservice and I praise good writing with a consistent world. I found this show LITERALLY trying to find bad anime to watch while I'm writing. I cannot stress enough how high my standards are for writing, worldbuilding, story and theme are for liking a show, and I LOVE this show. The show is called: Junketsu no Maria (Maria the Virgin Witch) Okay so on the surface this show is fanservice forgettable garbage. BUT I SWEAR THERE'S SO MUCH MORE! First of all this a show that MOST accurately portrays medieval warfare, even more than early Berserk. But HERE is the thing people miss about that show that's so special. *P H I L O S O P H Y* This show takes place in a world were biblical god is real. I don't mean cool guy god like in some bullshit show. I mean ANGRY VENGEFUL SMITING EMOTIONLESS GOD. It explores the ramifications of that fact as well as true morality juxtaposed to religious conviction complete with crisis's of faith in the most fantastically unique way I've ever seen. I cannot recommend this show enough, this is TRULY a hidden gem, it even hides itself behind it's stupid name and MASSIVE fanservice!

"If you ever listened to me talk for more than ten minutes, then you know I love it when fantasy series explain how their magic systems work." Have you read/listened to any of Brandon Sanderson's work? Or Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind? I know your deal is anime, but those books are my favorite as far as magic in fiction goes and their worldbuilding is impeccable. Both authors follow a rule that I think most popular fantasy ignores: "an author's ability to solve conflicts with magic is directly proportional to how well the reader understands said magic." In other words, no weird deus ex machinas are allowed. Brandon Sanderson is known as the Magic and worldbuilding guy. In all his series, he works his magic into every facet of the world that you'd think is relevant and even some you wouldn't, from the economy to the various religions. He explains them well BEFORE the cool thing happens so you're left impressed by the characters' cleverness rather than confused as to what just happened. And, of course, the magic is heckin' cool. I recommend the Mistborn series or the Stormlight Archive. Warbreaker is a good stand alone book, and the Reckoners series is a superhero story, though that one is not set in his shared Cosmere universe like most of his books are. Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle is the same. He has literal formulas that his magic adheres to. His books are about to be adapted to film, TV, and video games with the music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, so I highly recommend checking those out to stay ahead of the culture curve :)

Actually, Nadia and the secrets of blue water was a very famous 90s anime dubbed in Arabic. Named " Al Masa al Zarqa, meaning the Blue Diamond. Funny enough, I finished watching the series again but with my daughter this time and she liked it alot.

King of Bandit Jin doesn't need an over-arching plot. It was just fun to watch.

Okay, but what makes Avatar an anime?
@CometX-ing7 жыл бұрын
The fact that it is animated and by the Japanese definition (the real definition) all things animated are anime. But more so because it shares many qualities with most modern Japanese animation.

"Anime" in Japan is just the Japanese word for animation, from home or abroad. Outside of Japan, "anime" refers to only Japanese animation. Therefore, Avatar is not an anime, despite its obvious anime-inspired art and implementation of elements from Eastern cultures.

Austin P And is anime is Japanese word, so any other definition that is not the one used in Japan is not the original definition. As per the definition given to it in it's country of origin, Avatar is in fact an anime.

CometX-ing Sure, a Japanese person would call it anime. That's what I just said... but are you Japanese lol? I'm willing to bet you're an American teenager.

Austin P American yes, teenager, no. And that does not change the fact that by the original definition, Avatar is anime.

If you like when fantasy explains their magic systems, I would definitely recommend reading a book by Brandon Sanderson. Yeah its not anime, but that doesn't mean it isn't absolutely amazing.
