I loved _Weird Science_ and remember it back-to-back with _Duckman._ Unfortunately, it was a show that overstayed its welcome, declining in quality in Season 4. Having Chett unable to have his mind wiped of Lisa's magic, getting involved in the shenanigans, and then starting a potential romantic arc between the two was where the end began.

Happy you talked about Ferris Bueller and Parker Lewis. I remember Ferris being the lesser of the two shows despite it being the one directly taken from the movie. Maybe not having the constraints of being a sequel to the movie allowed Parker Lewis Can't Lose to become the better show. By the way, Family Guy references in one episode with Peter dressed as Parker Lewis and declaring that Parker can't lose even to Batman.

Parker Lewis is one of my favourite TV shows of all time. It was wholesome, funny, and brilliant. The cartoonish style was absolutely refreshing. One of the most hilarious details that I still remember, is Lemmer's nemmesis, who was a black guy called Remmel, with short and blond hair XD. I don't know if I'd go that far, but it was very, very good. Far better than almost anything in its era. The thing is, the ones that failed were the ones that pretty blatantly missed the entire point of the movie they were based on. The reason? 80's-90's TV was still horrendously conservative in its values, and couldn't fathom the kind of TV we have today. For all that some complain about it today, modern shows get away with a LOT more than they did 30 years ago, both in terms of plots and themes.
@Madbandit77
@Madbandit77 2 жыл бұрын
That's because cable around that time wasn't as big as today, and the Internet barely existed. Some do complain about the fracturing of entertainment, but having more options is better than watching something someone from Topeka, Kansas finds entertaining.

Good list. Rewatched Blue Thunder on GetTV a couple of years back when they aired the series on Saturday late night programming. I used to watch most of these, except for Fast Times. Starman was pretty good. Though I found similarities to, I think it was called The Phoenix. All I remember of the show is that the lead guy had powers and was being hunted by Richard Lynch. Ferris Bueller was okay, didn't recall most of these until this video. Thanks. If you ever do a part 2 to this list, I have suggestions. F/X: The Series (with a pre Matrix Carrie Anne Moss) , the original RoboCop (with a pre Rescue Me Andrea Roth) and Alien Nation.

Fast Times at Ridgemont high is one of the best and truest high school portrayals ever. There is no way the themes of the movie could ever be put in a sitcom. The subplot of JJL getting an abortion without parental consent is heavy but we all remember things like that happened in that day. Also, Spicolli's character was spot on but that movie was released before Nancy Reagan's successful "Just Say No" first lady's platform which was very influential in the mid to late 80s. No way a character like that could have been on primetime. Saved by the bell was pretty much a watered down Fast Times and it did touch on heavy subjects... drinking and driving also drug usage both were portrayed as really bad and served as a lesson for the characters

All were one-off episodes wherein the protagonist finds himself in new town, is able to help people who need it, only to be forced to move on by the single-minded antagonist trying to capture him.

It should be noted that some of the writers from Parker Lewis Can't Lose would go on to write for Weird Science's earlier seasons. Writers from the later seasons of Weird Sceince would then go on to write for the TV spinoff for Honey I Shrunk The Kids' first season. I seemed to recall USA Network doing well with the ratings of Weird Science on Saturday nights, but as soon as they moved the series to Sunday nights (early Monday morning), it killed the ratings. Though the last episode of the series was written AS a final episode, so perhaps USA moved it not wanting to devote much prime time real estate to a show already having ended.

So Jennifer Aniston played Ferris Bueller's sister in the TV series, a part that was played by Jennifer Grey in the movie. Jennifer Grey would later famously ruin her career thanks to a nose job, while Jennifer Aniston would find fame playing a character on "Friends" whose backstory included getting a nose job.

That ending clip is exactly how high school was for me... probably explains a thing or two about today's world... lol I remember watching Starman and Weird Science when I was younger. Never managed to catch the others. Likely because we moved around a lot back then due to my parents constantly being deployed to various places and spending a lot of time on bases in Europe back in the day. One thing I do remember though was just how scrubbed movies were prior to being shown on TV. Between scenes being completely removed (for content) and ads being inserted instead of overlaid, plus you had practically every word considered "bad" poorly dubbed out by someone that didn't even sound like the actor, "edited TV-PG and TV-PG13" was a poor man's way of seeing a movie way past it's VHS home release date. Kinda miss those days though. Always felt like something new was just about to be discovered when you went to the rental store or passed around the tape with episodes you missed between friends. Maybe because you had time to have that anticipation build up while you peddled home on your bike back then lol.

The helicopter in Airwolf looked cooler than the one in blue thunder. And you can’t beat Ernest Borgnine.😂😂😂

I saw many of these as a kid, including Blue Thunder. The only two things I remember about it is that they had a ground team in a truck or van that used the radio callsign Rolling Thunder and that it wasn't as good as Airwolf.

I had no idea about some of these spinoffs. I knew about Buffy because I actually watched the movie as a kid many times but never watched the TV show, same goes with Ferris. The movie Starman I've seen so many times but I had no idea about the TV show. Anyway, it is so cool to see what I've missed.

Michael Manasseri is still a very prolific actor with indie films like The Pickle Recipe. He made an offbeat superhero movie too called A Mosquito Man you might enjoy.

Two seasons of some of the best banter you’ll ever come across. Largely improv, as I recall. And an invisible man beats the living crap out of a mime for yucks.

STARMAN should have been a hit. Had all the right ingredients and was very well made. One of the few examples where an adaption of a movie into a tv show actually worked and made sense. I'm sure if they'd given the show more time it would have found an audience. Greetings from Germany :)

After first being introduced to Lee Tergesen on Weird Science it was kind of jarring to see him on Oz, the tone of the shows was completely opposite of eachother.

Two forgotten shows that could really use some love are Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and Hollistan. Hollistan also featured tons of crazy horror star cameos and recurring characters, such as Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris and even had the lead singers to Twisted Sister and Gwar as main cast members.

Worth noting that the Fast Times TV show had an original theme song written specifically for it by Oingo Boingo. It’s pretty catchy and hard to find. Alas, it’s not a full song, they just wrote 60 seconds of music and lyrics because that’s all that was called for

I friggen LOVED Parker Louis! And Airwolf! And Weird Science! I think I always thought I was the weird one for liking the 'off brand' versions. Except Weird Science, but I can give you a very good reason why that stayed on as long as it did...

I loved the Weird Science TV show, though I thought I would hate it because I love the movie. I actually ended up watching OZ on HBO because I was flipping through the channels one night and saw Lee Tergesen was in it. I was so surprised that he got more work after Weird Science that I had to see what it was about and loved it.

I very much enjoyed Blue Thunder. It was no Airwolf, but it was fine! 🥺 Woah, Weird Science had Lee Tergesen in it?? He's done some good roles in the 2000s. I particularly enjoyed him in Generation Kill, Castle and Law & Order SVU (the first appearance, as Billy Skags)
