In Australia we use a ightweight gas flame wand with auto-ignition which is ideal for killing all weeds in gravel or paved paths, patios and garden beds. It burns weeds at a safe distance eliminating the need to use nasty chemicals that will poison your soils. This method controls weeds organically and is so easy on your back as there is no bending down. You just walk, point and press! Replacement gas cartridges are easily available here at any hardware store. You only need to just cause the weed to 'collapse', not totally 'burn' for a more economic control. So enjoy your enthusiasm for all you do Linda - its like a little bit of magic and an extra helping hand!

@Edu_Kate3 жыл бұрын
I don't care for daylilies either. But I recently bought one because I liked the almost white bloom. It's called 'Sunday Gloves' and I plan to hide it behind a peony and some ornamental grass. I'm also on the lookout for a penstemon with darker foliage to also hide the daylily foliage. The blooms are pretty. In June, I dug up some 'Happy Returns'' daylilies that needed dividing years ago. I intended to pot them up and share with my neighbors. But it's been such a hot summer. The darn things are hanging in there. I managed to pot up six plants and those are sprouting some fresh greens so I'll put them on the curb for anyone who wants a plant. The remaining look dead and one big clump is even sitting in water (we finally got measurable rain!) and that's showing life with some green shoots poking up among the tan foliage. You know, ants spread violet seeds. I have had violets in my lawn the entire time I've lived here, 30 years. I think I'm over alliums (not the big, spring-blooming kind). They stink of onions if the foliage is crushed and the blooms are short-lived. Maybe if the variety was 'Millennial' I'd change my mind.

I was left the family home and it has a wisteria tree/bush. It has a trunk so it looks like a tree but it has runners that go along the ground just below the grass. when the runner pops up it becomes a vine and attaches to anything in its path. I am trying to pull the vines out, but there is actually a network of them below the ground.I did some research that said you have to be careful how you dispose of the vines because they have there own little roots and can re root them self if you just throw them in the woods.

Nasturtiums! I do love them but they take over. I planted a few in a bed for color for my son’s college graduation party. They spread all over the yard, jumped into the front yard and started growing up all of my trees before I went on a total eradication campaign. My son is now 46 and I am still ripping out the occasional volunteer. Snail vine was the same. Never again. My day lilies on the other hand bloom profusely most of the year and if I keep them cleaned up they bloom in the winter too and look lush and wonderful. I am in So California 10b… or is it 9b? Erg, well coastal anyway. And yes! I always stay-on for your fashion segment! Love your sense of style. ❤️

I agree with you wholeheartedly on your choices of flowers to never plant again. I made the mistake, about 20 years ago, of planting daylilies in different locations around my property. Now, every year I have to deal with the remains of the leaves after the flowers have completed their bloom cycle. The violets are always cute, but yes, way too invasive. I also struggle with morning glories growing up everywhere. I have salvia that self seeds all over the place. I dig those up every year and I have more now then ever. Also, the old fashioned wild yarrow I can’t get rid of. It has spread from one flower bed in the backyard to my lawn and flower beds in the front yard. Lots of mistakes made here.

For me certain varieties of evening primrose. I had started with one that stayed put - solid green leaf, but a friend gave me some that absolutely took over. Look great when they bloom with the delicate light pink flowers but then look messy when done. These have a red highlight to the leaves. Also chameleon plant though I have it contained in one small bed separated by a sidewalk and it’s fine. Gave some to my parents and it went everywhere. Last, you mentioned spider wort which I have the light blue and white flowered varieties - they spread. By chance a fuchsia colored variation came up at work and it stayed put. Took some home and it’s fine. The color is exceptional and different than anything else in my garden. Great video and thank you. 😎👌

I'm in zone 10b, coastal metro San Diego! after gardening since 2006, I can safely say these are no more for me!! 1. spider plant/chlorophytum. everywhere outside in socal. Green and variegated, and curly 'bonnie' variety. 2. Gazanias/African daisy. Self-seeding by wind...enough said. once they go over, its just one more thing. A good alternative is osteospermum. 3. Crassula ovata aka JADE - ubiquitous in this region, there are HILLS and valleys of it. Each leaf makes a new plant. If there is any jade in my collection or my friends, I'll keep up w it - but there are numerous awesome hybrids these days that I prefer. variegates, finger jade, 'gollum,' tricolor, etc. Not to mention the amazing, crassula undulata or 'ripple jade', crassula platyphylla, crassula argentea, and more. 4. Senecio (?) 'dusty miller' - fills an area in quickly, great white color; behaves almost as a bully... and it certainly becomes "dusty" with sooty mold and bug poop on the stems after a year or two! Get it out! Thats ant heroin right there. seriously. 5. Hawaiian snow bush/Brainia - lovely, unique colors, yet shows up a block from where it started!! does not transplant well either. 6. Felt-leaf pelargoniums. And ivy leaf geraniums. they are spring+summer pure white cabbage moth bait; leaves get destroyed by caterpillars,+ if you don't prune them, they look insane.. the dead leaves look bad after some time. I do like scented pelargoniums, the more unique smell or shape, the better. Love 'nutmeg' and the mint chocolate fuzzy one. 7. Dianthus - unless its a tall sweet William variety, for an herbaceous border type of look, they just get woody and dried up. 8. Ornamental sweet potato - is it just me, or is the ipomoea family toxic to surrounding plants?! I had this thing go CRAZY, and the co-planted Trachylospermum jasmine was obliterated; another 10 ft. tall x 6 ft. wide jasmine survived a few feet away though.

Mistake plants include: passion flower vine, snow on the mound, nasturtium, and I have to think about the rest. I've been meaning to tell you that I have an idea for your potager, specifically the lovely planter with the olive tree. I don't think it's the feature anymore as you can barely see it. I suggest you raise it so it sits almost as high as the boxwood hedge that surrounds it. What do you think Linda? On a fashion note, I just bought a pair of overalls in faded floral denim from April Cornell. While you look much better in yours, I'm going to keep mine (I was considering returning them). You always make me smile Linda and inspire me. Thank You and Stewart too! Enjoy what's left of the weekend.

If "snow on the mound" is aegopodium, then I am in total agreement! Unfortunately, most of the thugs in our garden are NOT things WE planted. Trumpet vine is probably the worst of the lot. I am also not fond of vinca minor, will completely take over. I'm trying to keep it to a confined area, but have a suspicion some day I'll be done with it, and try to remove it completely. Also dealing with wild violets. These are all a constant battle.

I planted passion vine, because my clematis was struggling in a very small area on brick patio and on trellis next to west side of house. Yes it takes management but the clematis that I thought had died has rallied. They play well together the passion vine seems to protect clematis. The clematis has been blooming since early spring and slows in heat but the passion plant blooms are great into fall. I am in zone 7, the passion plant remain green most of winter so I leave the hard pruning until early spring. Since it’s in direct line of site to backyard, last year I tied silk poinsettias and bows for holidays. Yes a pain to manage but pretty to look at.

Back in the 1970’s my Mom put some Violets, Coral Bells and Mint in the flower beds. They like most ground covers got out of hand. But the Violets got into the Lawn and they are extremely difficult to kill even when using repeated applications of a selective herbicide. So I’ve essentially given up. But I know they cannot defeat the lawn mower and the string trimmer. So in the Fall when the frost has knocked them down they’re carcasses move over to the compost bin.

it can destroy a/c, gutters, a home, electrical, cause tripping in the yard, over take everything, take years to get rid of it, smothers other plants, I hate it..

Omg yes! I moved this past spring and apparently they were in some of the pots I brought to the new house….& now I’m dealing with here too 🤯

No more mint (too invasive) & day lilies (boring)! ❤️ the fashion epilogues!

Day lilies, absolutely. Sure, the flowers are beautiful for a short time, but they are just too high maintenance for the return. I had around 45 of them, I've removed all but 10 "special" Brecks ones...done! And yes to the continuation of the fashion epilogue. I have expanded my wardrobe based on your epilogue. I must admit, that I am sometimes a fashion "snob"...you are turning me around when I see that you are wearing Target, Amazon, and thrift store pieces...and you look great! Cheers.

Good advice. Just spent hours digging out 'weeds' every Spring they pop up, don't need Pop Up Plants as well !!

Love the fashion epilogue! I would add asiatic jasmine to the list of don’t plant. It’s been quite the “thug” in my garden. I’ve joked that if I didn’t like someone that is the plant I’d offer them lol

I agree 100% about tradescantia, your number 5. It is highly invasive, even grows in the cracks in the sidewalk. It's hard to dig up, and most herbicides don't touch it. I wish I had never heard of it!

My never grow again plant is Chameleon plant- Houttuynia cordara. It’s so aggressive and invasive. It took me years to get rid of it plus it stinks when broken. Zone 6b/7a I love the fashion segment!!
@speedbump24483 жыл бұрын
I agree! It is even growing in asphalt in my driveway😳. When I purchased it, the info label said it would grow in wet or damp type area. This stuff will and does grow anywhere, and you can’t get rid of it. I pour straight poison ivy killer on any that I see. I tell anyone I see that is thinking of buying it for the “pretty” leaf, do t do it it is Satan in plant form. 👿

@@speedbump2448 years ago my in-laws had their yard professionally landscaped and that plant was put in! My head all but exploded!!

Agreed! I had a patch that, at first, I thought was beautiful. That was until it took over a hydrangea and a large hosta. It just completely engulfed them. I dug out the entire area about a month and a half ago, and it’s growing back quite nicely, including growing up through newly planted perennials. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll be battling it for years. And yes, it does stink when broken. Nasty stuff.

My grandma always talks about that and wish she never planted it. she give me somthing and i think it had a piece of Chameleon in it its in my garden but it has stayed put for me and doesnt travel.. its been there 4 years now lol 🤷♂️

@@travsgardenstravshauntedya1998 you’re lucky!! It has underground runners and I think the flowers send seeds. I was finding pieces in other flower beds! It’s a pretty plant though!

English Ivy. It's pretty, but so hard to control. I put it in one year, and later spent 2 years hand pulling it out all over my yard. It still pops up occasionally, years later!

I would probably not plant lily of the valley. I planted a few cuttings from My mothers yard 35 years ago. So I love sentimentality. I love the look and smell of them in the spring, but by this time of year they look tired. I have just spent hours cutting them back at the ground. Now I have that negative space that Linda loves. Starting to tidy up the garden for fall here in the PNW.

Linda, thank you for sharing your experiences with those plants. I planted some Celosia Cristata 2 yrs ago and they're beautiful, but they self-seed EVERYWHERE. I'm so thankful for your channel. Blessings sweet lady!

I agree with you about daylillies! I don’t enjoy them at all! Spiderwarts just appeared in my garden, but when I cut them, they died right away. But I do love violets, so now I plant them in my raised garden so I can control them and I like to cut them for my house as well. Oh and I really enjoy your fashion “show” and I think your jewelry is beautiful and really different. Thank you for sharing all your ideas and your helpful hints. Diane
