A very insightful choice of mistakes. Most Mediterranean languages (and others I might be unaware of) do feature the mistaken version of almost all of these cases. My native language, Greek, is no exception. It took me forever to work out why "run in the park" should be a mistake, and "if yes" and "forget something at...(place)" are perfectly correct in Greek. So first language interference is inevitable there. Thanks again, keep up the great work!

I’ve become fascinated with these videos. I’m a native English speaker, and, as such, am not used to analysing the language I use. I’m learning a lot from you about why I say the things I do. The use of go -ing for a leisure activity was interesting, although I wanted to say “I go for a run” rather than “I go running”. Is this just an acceptable alternative?

I'm a native Englush speaker in the USA, but you still stumped me on a couple. One of them (Yes, let's) is not used in the US, being more of a British type of phraseology. Also, I was taught in school on the "If so, then...." to use a comma there to separate those phrases. Very interesting, these videos.

new yorker here, i disagree with you about ‘i run’ vs ‘i go running’ .. i would say either of your choices. in fact, using the one with fewer syllables is quicker, so if my information is understood correctly, i see no need to add useless baggage. “i run every day in the park before i start work/school/etc.” love the palm tree !

some of these seem to be more peculiar to British English usage; in America we are not so strict in phrasing as that; there are variations, it's just our way, as the language is evolving constantly. However, for foreigners learning English, these are good and useful tips as they navigate their voyage into our language and want to make themselves understood. English is a hard language to learn properly, despite what I have heard foreign speakers say, precisely because we are constantly absorbing and inventing new words and new ways to say something.

I could only correct one. However, the examples you presented were not really grammar mistakes. To use leave instead of forget... there is no grammar rule to that. Grammar is about tenses, if clauses, passive, reported speech. Shall we do a challenge about grammar mistakes? Yes, let's!

7:49 Beware, saying "I'm at home" can sometimes have the implication that you are inviting someone to tea or to a soiree. Especially if combined with a date. If you tell your friends "I'm at home on Thursday", don't be surprised to find them all turning up on Thursday with bottle in hand! Maybe another topic for your videos, Gideon, would be about the articles. See how I use the idiomatic expression 'bottle in hand' with no indefinite article ('a'). I think there a lot of such expressions still in use in modern English. I believe they come from very old English (more than a thousand years ago) when the English language---all Germanic languages---did not have articles. But the experts will correct me on this.

@josephcote61205 жыл бұрын
When speaking about a person, MELLOW means calm, relaxed, no anxiety or stress, happy with the world, no strong emotions. To say "Stay mellow" shows a wish that the other person will feel that way. Just a nice thing to say. Same idea when mellow is used for (almost always alcoholic) drinks. No strong tastes, not too sweet, not too bitter, just a pleasing flavor.

Even though I am a very advanced learner (I have been speaking English regularly for 15 years) I still manage to learn a lot about some subtleties in the English language in some of your videos, I would go as far as saying that even natives could benefit from them. -That being said, how is "I forgot my keys at home" wrong gramatically?? It might not sound super ideal from an idiomatic standpoint but I don't see what's wrong with the grammar here. - The "yes let's" just alone without any verbs following it like "let's go" or "let's do that" tbh I have never really heard that before and I have watched countless films and series plus lived in the UK.. I have no doubt that this is the ideal form according to the Oxford dictionary but is it really used in the real life..?
@LetThemTalkTV6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your message. "I forgot my keys at home " is not correct because you say where your keys are. "Yes let's" is still used a lot but of course there are other ways to answer too. "sure", "certainly", "why not" etc...
