Great video Gideon and everything in here is spot on according to a 60+ year native speaker. On the subject of shall/will, I think it has changed a bit in modern usage, but certainly for an older person, the word 'shall' means a certainly, whereas 'will' means an intention. "I shall return" means it's certain that I will return. "I will return" means that it's my intention to return. If I say "I'll be back" it means "I will be back" meaning it's my intention. When the terminator says "I'll be back" then mentally I assume he's saying "I shall be back" meaning it's unavoidable !!!

My favourite teacher, you have told lies a little bit about Spanish verb. On the whole, the Spanish language is considered the easiest of the European languages, and as for Spanish verbs system, it is much easier to learn than the English verbs system. Though, you are still my favourite English teacher. You're the best. None can contend with you.

There are exceptions, dear Teacher! I speak Portuguese as a mother tongue, however, I have never been obsessed with verbs. I understand what you said though. Yes, my fellow counterparts are obsessed with verbs when it comes to learn another language. Can't blame them though. That's how we were taught at school since early age.

I learned a lot of this by example, from my parents’ speech and from reading. I also picked up some usage that is considered quaint now in American English, like “should you come across that letter, please send me a copy”, “shall we go”, etc., these are becoming more and more rare in speech here. I also still use only may for permission, not can. Some interesting aspects of English are those gender differences I noticed between the softer, more polite usages of women of my Mom’s generation, and mine (born 1960), and the stronger, more decisive structures of my Father’s. We might say, “I’d really like to” instead of my Dad’s much stronger “I have decided to”. Or “would you mind cleaning the floor next, please?”, instead of “next, clean the floor”. It’s especially tricky for us to use the imperative, this was a no-no for females. With non-native English speakers, the question forms like “would you mind doing” are confusing, so they often answer no, meaning “no, I didn’t do that”. So, it’s become more important for us older women to adjust to using the imperative, with our large population of non-native, very partial, English speakers, who make up most of the work force. My wealthy, educated California county’s population doubles on workdays, when immigrant workers commute in to work at low-paying jobs, mostly domestic and unskilled construction, they can’t afford to live here, sadly. The state is really dividing into two classes: a mostly European-origin (some East Asian) with higher education, doing the white-collar, highly-paid work and a second group of uneducated, mostly Hispanic immigrants with no or little English, making up the majority of the low-paid blue-collar and service workforce. Well-educated Hispanics who know basic English can jump right into the upper class. Truly upper-class people, in terms of wealth, are here but keep an extremely low profile, they don’t want to stand out in any way.

Thank you for this video. It´s the more usefull video about modality I have found so far. There is something I´d like to know; one of the rules for modal verbs is that they are always followed by a regular verb in the infinitive without to be. So, can´t I use a non-modal irregular verb after a modal verb? You´re an awesome teacher.

It's pretty much the same meaning as 'should'...except a. You should / ought to help my mum. (both fine) b. I ought to help my mum, but I don’t think I will. ('should' wouldn't sound right here as it would be strange to give yourself advice then not follow it. - So 'ought to' is related more to a duty/law/regulation
