I've had three VW vans. The first was a '66 that I bought for $600 in 1972. Several of my friends had similar vans at the time. I must have had fun with mine because I once lost it for a year, to find out that I had left it in the woods behind a friend's house at some apparently very good party. The second was an '84 GL tin top I bought for $900 in 1993. That was cheap even then for such a nice van. The car lot owner thought it needed an engine, but I realized that it was just a busted exhaust header. After fixing that, I don't think I ever had another failure. I gave it due maintenance, a set of studded snow tires, and a 4-wheel alignment appropriate to snow country. I lived in it way hell-and-gone in Colorado while working as a housewright. I could put all of my carpenter toys in the back, and my crew of four could still sit comfortably in it at lunchtime or when sitting out a snowsquall. I could even get a fair amount of 12' lumber inside the van. That was one of the cheapest cars to own I've ever had. When I moved down to town, I didn't need the space and traded the van for an MG Midget. My third and current is a very pretty '82 Westy diesel (I won't share the obscene amount I paid for it), where I sit and type now from a spot on family land near Pumpkintown, Lower Appalachia, South Carolina. It was on a tow hook twice in the first month I owned it, and it now sits in need of an engine, ideally an AHU tdi if I can find one. I enjoy your posts and your outlook on stuff. Peace. }}}}

@@Sebastianstonum❤ Exactly. To address the reliability issues, as you said keeping up on maintenance is key. I did an EJ-25 Subaru swap on my 85 and also replaced everything that looked suspect. My van is reliable. I do not hesitate to take it on 13 hour annual road trips. Be smart with the upgrades and these cans are awesome. ;-)

I’ve had VW vans, a six volt split windshield I drove all over California and took to Baja and a Vanagon I tried to drive cross country that kept breaking down. I find the interior small and the windows offer zero insulation. Currently retired in a 2020 Promaster custom built interior and in Peru heading to Patagonia. I meet VWs on the road and my hat is off to them but I am entirely content with my Promaster. Best wishes to you and keep enjoying it. I love your enthusiasm.

Hi I have a 1982 vanagon/ love it/ how difficult was it to remove those upper cushions off the top bed? How much storage did you gain by doing so (with the top down?) tx
@Sebastianstonum4 ай бұрын
@@dta97392 there’s a significant amount of storage, it was just those 4 screws on the hinge and it comes out. I put some angle aluminum there instead to keep stuff from sliding out. I’ve slept up there twice in the past few years so this is a much better use of the space

I think you are too harsh on the reliability aspect of older VW’s they are actually extremely reliable. Yes older ones that have not been maintained by previous VW owners will have failures but that’s any vehicle. Ive owned many old air cooled vw’s and they are great cars. I also have an ALH tdi and those are literally known for being the most reliable TDI vw made. Mine has 357k and there plenty others out there with over 500k. Granted the TDI’s do need to be maintained more and you do have to put quality parts on VW’s since the germans didn’t design them to be ran with low quality parts therefore those parts will fail and people then revert to saying the VW is the one that’s not reliable. Idk just my 2 cents. It seems like you hate your VW cause someone told you VW’s are unreliable and you’ve had a couple failures on your old unmaintained vehicle. I don’t mean any of this in a negative way BTW i really do like your videos. It’s inspired me to get a vanagon actually. Thanks again.

So when maintained with regular maintenance the 1984 VW Wetfalia class B camper van 1.9 liter, 4-cylinder, water-cooled engine with manual transmission is reliable?
@geoffoneida48720 күн бұрын
@ Sure why not? Most vehicles when maintained well are typically reliable for the most part. Some are better than others for sure. Personally id take an air cooled VW over a 1.9 water boxer but there are still Vanagon out there running on the 1.9 water boxer so that says something.
