If there's one request I get over and over again, it's for more episodes of DOAC like in our early years, just me what's front of my mind - an authentic 'Diary of a CEO'.

It depends on what you are referring to. Procrastination can be a good thing. For example I was going to buy a Range rover... I postponed it, wanted to buy something else, didn't buy it... Now I own apartments elsewhere. Do you think I would be able to acquire those apartments if I had spent that money on a nice car which won't fetch me any money? Think,!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 📉 *Most people abandon New Year's resolutions within a month; only 9% succeed by year-end due to persistent old habits.* 01:21 🔄 *After 6 months, 46% of New Year's resolution makers succeed, compared to 4% with non-resolution goals; stress plays a crucial role.* 04:47 🚦 *Habits consist of cues, routines, and rewards; identifying and managing cues is vital for habit change.* 05:57 🚫 *Instead of focusing on stopping bad habits, replace them; suppressing thoughts about habits can lead to rebound effects.* 07:21 🎯 *Intrinsic motivation is key; having a deep, personal reason for change increases the likelihood of success.* 08:42 🧠 *Willpower is not constant; it depletes throughout the day. Sustainable goals and finding alternative rewards are crucial for habit formation.* 13:35 🎯 *Setting small, achievable goals increases sustainability; attempting too many unrealistic goals strains willpower, leading to failure.*

I remember when I stopped smoking for good, my main trigger was when I was drinking. The only way I could stop, was to remove myself from the pub as soon as I felt the pang to have a cigarette. It took about six months when I got to the point that I went out for an evening with friends and I didn’t even think about cigarettes. That is when I knew I was done with it.

Gosh! This is why it has taken me 10 years plus to give up smoking! 3 months in and now want to follow a complete plant diet, wonder why I have recently started thinking about ciggies again. Too much pressure! So this means, one thing at a time clearly. We need to be kinder to ourselves and give praise for what we have accomplished before we jump onto the next thing and start stressing ourselves out and depleting our willpower again right?!! Thanks so much for this Stephen. Resonates. Much love x

I think this is really helpful - particularly for this time of year. Always look forward to your content! To one of the hacks, I quit smoking cold turkey after 21 years for a very good reason: I found out I was pregnant. But I also told myself that I was lighting up at the moment of my son's birth. But then I came across information that the incidents of SIDS goes up 500% in the homes of smokers. Fast forward to today (my son is 22) and still have never touched a cigarette and the thought makes me ill. A second point I would like to make is I am a big fan of gaining a foothold and tweaking; I was overweight for most of my life despite working out and being active and have successfully lost half my bodyweight and kept it off for the last 10 years+ by constantly researching, experimenting, adding (and subtracting) to my approach/optimizing in an effort to live my best life.

For some reason, I have only just noticed this @ 2:27 in. Although I try to watch as many of these podcasts as I can and to finish them entirely, already just 2 minutes in I feel much more captivated listening to you tell the science and the facts rather than the guests you have. No discredit to them at all and may be that I am familiar with your voice as the questions you ask during the interviews are great foundation questions where I can relate. Anyways, would love some more like this and mad respect for the podcast.

Something that works for me is to tie the goal to the core value of mine. So for example, instead of making the goal to save money, the goal become to learn how to save money. Learning and personal growth are core values of mine so it's far more effective that way. It also sort of leaves room to make mistakes and learn from them and move on rather than considering any setbacks as bigger failures than they really are learning inherently involves making mistakes so if learning is the goal, mistakes are okay to a point of course. I hope that helps some people:-)

For me its working better if I say: this year or by the end of this year I will achive this, rather then with 1.1. im doing this... because 1.1. is just a normal day and if if you put all the gouls in it, you will soon break it and then give up. But with giving yourself more time you at some point are more naturally prepared to do something- it doesent seem forced on you,if that make sence. ❤

Great advice. Changing few words also helps so rather then new year resolution saying I would like to achieve ...... because it will make me feel...... When there is a gratification, a tangible gift you are going to achieve it is more likely that you will stick by it in my opinion.

I see this with gym memberships. My gym David Lloyd January becomes very busy, and when the Permeant members complain about the state of the changing rooms or of their gym etiquette, how they treat the gym or untidy weight areas etc other members remind them ‘don’t worry they’ll be gone by feb/March and true to their testaments they are out of there.

Amazing episode thank you. This helps getting in the right gear for 2024. Have to add a sidenote to the willpower thing: the last episode of the de. Huberman podcast with David goggins, they discuss an interesting topic about a brain structure involved in willpower, that grows the more people do things they actually don't want to do (and therefore get better at doing things with just willpower). Could it be that the research is done in 'untrained' people who fatigue their willpower earlier? What if it can be trained?

Several times in my life I really thought through what I wanted understanding clearly why I wanted it. I then made a wish and put it out to the Universe. For example I wished to kick my sugar addiction so I wouldn't become diabetic. Guess what? I kicked the sugar habit losing 40 lbs and am no longer prediabetic. My blood sugar is now normal. So think things through and make a WISH!!! Cheers!!!

the reason why that is is because making New Year's resolution in the middle of the winter ( for everyone who lives in a place where there is winter ) is the worst time to commit to new things. The best time to make New Year's resolution is in the beginning of spring. When nature is blossoming again. The new year placement in the middle of winter is western concept, which has been implemented by Julius Caesar ( for political reason) . That being said there is nothing natural about NY being in winter and making Ny resolutions around this time. NY resolution is a great concept because it pushes you to reflect on yourself and your life. Living in synchronicity with the laws of Mother Nature is the way to go.

But the study doesn’t fully make sense to me for many reasons 1- not sure all participants developed will power 2- even if, I believe will power is developed in different areas, for examples I’m on keto, developed my will power against sweets, I don’t get affected by someone eating sweets in front of me , I literally don’t crave them (because over the years I developed this idea of linking sugar and junk to bad outcome cuz my mom suffered cancer) so I would probably react differently than the ones in the study….. because i developed will power in that area

You cannot fight the old mental muscle with insight & willpower. You need to train your brain and build new neural pathways to fight muscle with muscle and sustain the change you desire. This is a mental fitness training, the same way you hi to gym you have to train your brain’s muscles too 🧠🏋🏼‍♀️

I had an Epiphany when you talked about will depletion. Not about new years resolution. But about my life. I have ADHD. I suppress a lot of my symptoms or my geniun self during the day, to function. I have a pretty normal job, everyday life. The following thought came to me: What if I have the same will power as everyone else, but because the way society and masking both work, I use it up in a significant shorter time (for things neurotypicals dont need it for). And then beat myself up for my "weak will power" in the end ... it makes so much sense to me, in my head.

Willpower is used before the behavior becomes habit, routine. You can exhaust willpower, but it is also like a muscle that is exercised. The more you say no to something, the more it is easier to say no. Everytime you say no, it's reinforced. And substituting is also a great way to succeed. I drink juice when I feel like having something sweet. But more than that, I want to be the person who is Really taking care of my health, and avoiding diseases that come from not doing so.
