I have had a Triple Rectifier for 13 years now. Starting to think about getting another head to change things up (but not retiring my Mesa by any means). Listened to this with some good headphones on, and scrolled down so I could not see the video. Every time I thought "YEAH THAT ONE SOUNDS AWESOME!" I scrolled up and it was the Mesa. Soooooo I guess I will just keep doing what I'm doing. Surprised at how much I liked the Randall in the mix though. Not as much by itself, but still. Thanks for this video, great sound quality and presentation to compare these amps.

The short (ranked by number and quick comment regarding in the mix): 1-Randall (not my usual pick) 2-Bugera (usually sound poo) 3-Mesa (usually my top pick) 4-Marshall (a proven classic) The long: For me, the Randall sounded best. The Mesa would have been a winner had it not been EQ'ed the way it was, maybe due to the extended range guitar. The Bugera was a sleeper. I didn't expect it to sound as good as it did but they've improved a lot lately. The Marshall was weak. A JVM series or a JCM 900 or 2000 would have fit the style more. The JCM 800 is a great amp in other applications.

AWESOME! LOVE the playing. The Bugera sounds "wrong." I'm a little surprised at the sponginess of the Peavey. I mean, I know it's tube rectifiers & all, but it sounds kind of flaccid. As much as I hate to admit it, I think the Mesa sounds the best. Which one did you prefer? There's a feel you get from playing out of the amp that we can't experience unless we have all 5 amps too, & I don't.

Didn't like the Randall much, Bugera was a bit fizzy but that could probably be dialled out, Marshall was surprisingly good (to my ears), 5150 probably the most balanced, and the Mesa had the nicest bottom end but was too scooped (could also probably be dialled out).

Dual Rec was awesome in the more deathmetally chords but for the fast palm mutes the Peavey was best. All very high quality amps but i think for overall it's Mesa or Peavey, just depends on the playing style, so why not get both?

The Randall and Bugera for this application have the best cut in the mix. Mesa would be great if it wasn't an extended range guitar, and Marshall is a no go for extended range in this mix, too dark and too muddy. Mesa got lost in the drum track many times. The amp I was most surprised with was the block letter, though it may just have been the mix.

That 5150 really gave the other amps a run for their money. It has so much more bite and way more mid-range chunk than any of those amps. I'm not surprised since 5150's have such a good reputation for being a staple of solid metal tones. What I did find surprising was how the "333 firestarter" actually handled the 8 string nicer than the JCM. The price difference is quite big and JCM's are legends of metal but I guess that was more a product of their time. The 333 was at least better than the Marshall and really did a good job trying to emulate the 5150 sound. I can easily say 5150 was the best, JCM was the worst, and it's hard to really say between the Mesa, Randall, and Bugera. I would say that the Bugera has the most clarity between them which deserves 3rd best but the Mesa also really has a nasty tone that's not truly deserving of 4th. Randall might just win second because the mid-range chunk sounds massive and would melt faces even though it lacks the clarity of the 5150. Sadly it looks like I rate them: 1 5150 2 Randall 3 333 4 Mesa 5 JCM Which feels like blasphemy because I've played Rectifiers before and they are a dream but it really failed in the mix compared to the 333.

I gotta dig the marshall.. the mesa just sounds so over exposed and over used now that the tone becomes boring for me.. not saying it's a bad tone at all (they sound amazing) but my god, a mesa rec through a 2x12 mesa v30s and a shure mic is all I hear now.
