The idea of the Knights Templar being obscene, lecherous and thieves came from the French. A French king hearing that the Knights were richer beyond the dreams of avarice, and since he was up to his eyeballs in debt, then decided that he'll accuse the Knights of atrocious crimes, get rid of them and claim their wealth. The Knights Templar were horribly tortured and killed. This went on for a long time until the Pope intervened and put a stop to it. It was around then that the Knights became a regular religious order like the Franciscans instead of a fighting one. They're still around in fact. But people today still believe the evil stories that were told about them. 🙁

In the scene when Balian and the Hospitaller are talking about Balian losing his religion and the Hospitaller says he doesn't like religion because it creates fanaticism and war, there's no way a conversation like that could go down the way it did back in the time the movie is based. You may be right, but the director should be allowed a little artistic license with these types of scenes. Because the common mans thoughts were not often recorded back then, just like they arent recorded today, one can only imagine what they might have felt about Holy War, or the Divine Right of Kings. What I do like about the movie is the virtue which Bailan bestows when asked to elimate Guy De Lusignan (spelling). So while his thoughts might wander/wonder about the true divine nature of God, his actions show his devotion to righteousness - and therefore shows his love of God ( John 14:21) I might also add that the Hospitaller knight may not be an earthly being.

One of the things I find so silly about this movie is how quickly the massive armies moved. Baldwin orders the army to assemble and meet Saladin. Balian is ordered to go out and protect the villagers around Kerak, he rides out, meets the enemy, then Baldwin appears with an army of hundreds of thousands - all in what appears to be a single day. Its all very exciting and impressive looking for the sake of the drama, but in reality would probably take weeks to transpire.

What I always find puzzling is that if Ridley Scott and his team wanted to make a medieval kind of story but with contemporary ideals about religion, why not pull a Berserk or LOTR and make an alternate world based on earth and have the countries and conflict alluding to their real world history counterparts? They could've gotten the whole "Two faiths can respect each other and coexist" idea without bastardizing public perception of actual history.

My very thoughts. Couldn’t they have set the story in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily? Around the same time of “Kingdom of Heaven”, the Kingdom of Sicily was a melting pot of Greek-Byzantine, Normans, Arabs and all cohabited peacefully. It would have made a perfect example of respect and tolerance.

@@IFORBIDANYDATACOLLECTIONTOALL The movie is a personal perspective driven retelling of historical events. But don't ever mistake The Crusades as anything good Christendom has done. It began as radical religion and then was further perverted by power hunger and greed. The part of the Crusades that the movie villainizes that I don't agree with though, are the Templars. Although I will admit they too fell pretty to power and greed eventually, they had benevolent intention initially and are responsible for many modern institutions such as the credit and debit banking system.

While I agree on everything you say, I do think the Holy orders showed a bit more tolerance towards Muslims on occasion. For example, there is the famous passage from Usama where he is visiting Jerusalum during a truce and was grabbed by a secular Christian knight who is offended at him praying towards Mecca. It was a Templar who came to Usama's aid, explaining that the knight was a "foreigner" from Europe and had not seen anyone praying like that. So at least Templars could be tolerant in times of peace. King Amalric also showed respect for Islam in his philosophical questions to Guilliame of Tyre, which cast doubts on the superiority of Christendom. So while I wholeheartedly agree that the film tries to modernize attitudes, there was a bit more tolerance on the Crusaders part, something which is often ignored by modern demonizing of crusaders. Great channel, as always.
@Thor-Orion
@Thor-Orion 7 ай бұрын
Oh, I think you’re misinterpreting what he said. He did say that they would be tolerant towards Muslims living in their lands like Saladin was tolerant towards Christian civilians living in his lands. It’s just that they wouldn’t place emphasis on protecting Muslims and Jews over protecting Christians as that was a direct dialogue exchange in the movie between Baldwin and Balian(?).

Ridley Scott has a way of twisting and revising history. He did it in Gladiator as well. Commodus, son of Marcus Aurelius, the Emperor fought in many gladitorial fights as history tells. I generally can't enjoy movies that butcher history, but this movie is one that I am able to still enjoy. It is good from a perspective of cinema and the soundtrack is amazing (composer is Harry Gregson-Williams, same guy as did the Disney Narnia movies). Unlike, say, Braveheart, the movie still more or less follows the correct course of events, which helps me suspend my disbelief. Another thing that helps my willful suspense and my enjoyment is that the portrayal of medieval combat is well above average in my opinion. Like any Hollywood movie, there's some nonsense (like holding an arming sword two handed above the head), but the cavalry charges are handled pretty well, and there are times when ARMOR ACTUALLY WORKS.

Good points made. One quibble: Did Sibylla follow Gui into captivity after Hattin? I was under the impression she stayed in Jerusalem and then accompanied the evacuees to one of the coastal cities that remained in Christian hands (Tripoli, apparently). Then rejoined the released Gui when he tried to get into Tyre, and then (having been refused entry by Conrad of Montferrat) set about besieging Acre, which had also fallen to Saladin meanwhile. I gather and her daughters perished in an epidemic during that siege. (The film, fantastically enough, has Sibylla going to France to become a blacksmith's wife.) Good point about Saladin doing the opposite as regards the cross, though apparently the crucifix the Saracens abused in Jerusalem was the one that the Crusaders had put up above the Dome of the Rock. Another error in the film is that it has a blanket release of the Franks of Jerusalem, when in fact a ransom was required (though for some it was waved). Also many did not escape but had the misfortune to be taken as slaves and subjected to humiliating abuse. Not a hint of that in the film. The idea that the crusaders were insincere in their motivation is a projection by modern ideologues who have a problem believing in religious people being likewise sincerely ideological.

After all they had the big money in the big actors, they just had it all wrong in their hearts...they had an ax to grind.

Dead on. I'm glad i found this. Kingdom of heaven is an anti-Christian movie . I couldn't stand it even since the 1st time i saw it, that crusader knights talking and reasoning like modern day liberals. or who was a real crusader in real time was portrayed as a villain and those accused of being traitors like Raymond of Tripoli (Tiberius) is portrayed as the perfect knights. Or when balian says "we fight not to protect these stones but the people living within these walls". They fought to defend pilgrims but most of all and one of the main reasons why the crusades where launched was to protect the holy sites associated with Jesus paricularly The Holy Sepulcher, Golgotha etc. Even the Patriarch of Jerusalem was portrayed as villain and something i could never stand for is when he said "Convert to Islam, repent later". Come on. King Baldwin IV before he died would obviously confess like any other catholic but strangely he replied "i will confess to God not to you" like a protestant. I can find a dozen errors in kingdom of heaven. Tiberius condemning Templars to be hanged? what the hell? Military crusading order could not be judged unless it comes directly from the pope. And Templars were real warriors the best there was they didn't raid and kill innocents.

I just wanted to say that, as a devout Muslim, you speak about my religion respectfully and accurately. I wanted to thank you for that you put a lot of research into your videos, and it shows. Additionally, I'm glad you brought up the scene where Salah Al-Din picked up the cross. When I saw that in the movie, it was one of the most ridiculously false things. I mean this with respect; in my faith, the cross is seen as an idol, and to think a devout Muslim like Salah Al-Din would show it with such care is crazy. An essential part of our faith is no idols ever under any condition. Most Muslim rulers would have ordered every cross broken and burned, just as the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, ordered the breaking of idols in Mecca. And most Muslim soldiers would have been happy to do so.

I'll never understand Hollywood's weird fascination with taking a profound Historical event, in this case, the Kingdom of Jerusalem's fight against Saladin, and twisting it into their own post-modern, depressed, cynical, atheistic, deterministic, nihilistic garbage. I remember I couldn't even get through this movie back then it bothered me so much. Are you willfully dense? Gladiator does not profess to be a historical film. Its an adventure, drama action movie set in Rome. @Joey "Kingdom of Heaven portrayed real people, organizations and events in a very distorted manner" Really? Marcus Aurelius and Commodus didn't exist? Commodus didn't actually fight people in the arena in an attempt to gain fame and love from the masses as a Gladiator? There wasn't a Roman military campaign going on in Germania at the time with Aurelius in command? So, were the events, people and organizations in Gladiator portrayed in a very distorted manner, or did Commodus actually die fighting in the arena? Was there truly a battle with flame pot throwing canisters as was portrayed at the beginning of Gladiator, or is that a distorted event?

Regarding the 5th point on this video, that roadside priest saying "To kill an infidel is not murder, it is the path to heaven," is representative of a common misconception in modern people about what Pope Urban II said when he authorized the Crusade. Catholics believe that Christians who die with unconfessed sins go to purgatory. This is why last rights is so important to the Roman Catholics--it is the final chance to confess and repent of any remaining sins, lest the dying person spend time in purgatory. It's also important to note that the Roman Catholic Church translated the sixth commandment as a literal "Thou shalt not kill," rather than "Do not murder." Therefore, killing anyone, even in self-defense or in battle was considered to be a sin. Priests attempting to render last rights on battlefields was a thing, but it was certainly a dangerous practice, even if it wasn't being done in the midst of fighting. What the Pope actually said was that, for those who went on Crusade, and wore the sign of the Cross, if they killed a non-Christian in battle while on Crusade, and were thereafter slain before they were able to see a confessor, they would not spend time in purgatory due to having killed a person in that context. So, if they had no other unconfessed sins, they would go straight to heaven, which is how this killing=going to heaven bit came to be. I imagine that the Islamic Jihadist ideal being confladed with the Crusade also doesn't help.

Yeah, the movie seems to have a modern moral that appears motivated by the actual situation back then in Jerusalem - at the end of the film, they even wrote that the kingdom of heaven hasn’t found peace to this day, or something like that. Still, I think that it’s also an error to think about medieval people as completely intolerant and with a total lack of empathy. They were still humans, and they tolerated other religions in their kingdoms. Some were more tolerant than others, and as far as I know, Saladin was described as fair, generous, and pious, and he permitted other religions within his empire. Maybe I’m wrong.

There's hundreds, of inaccuracies. But, I understand they needed to make amendments for "movie" plot. Though I think history it's self, was worth showcasing as close as possible. Kingdom of Heaven was a success if we look at how many would be historians and medieval enthusiast it spawned, from its release to such a broad number of people, albeit some are still blinded by it. Wasn't there a Historian lady who seemed to have first heard of Guy De Lusignan in Kingdom of Heaven movie, and decided to make "work" of her own based on his inability to lead, due to movies premise. Hilarious. Guy De Lusignan wouldn't have been followed by a single Knight if they had a slight hunch he was incapable of a task such as that. Sometimes, thy made judgement that is easy for historians to take apart and recompile and criticize piece by piece. But sadly, not everyone had a luxury of sitting Infront of laptop, surrounded by all the modern luxuries, including fresh drinkable water and any type of food imaginable. Decisions were made and depreciation accepted.
