I have a wicker pendant in my dining room and I think the main complaint about it that people don’t realize is that they don’t actually light the space. Having a fixture with a single bulb means you need other lamps in the room to get proper light. I originally had an oversized Edison bulb in it and I had to switch it out for an LED bulb which takes away from the look of the fixture. The single bulb still isn’t enough light so I am moving it to a bedroom where I don’t need as much brightness. I have other lamps in there to offset it. They are nice to look at but aren’t practical as a single statement fixture.

As you are an interior designer, I'm curious about your experience with homes that are aiming for a very "alternative" style? And if you've ever worked with people like that and been able to help them develop their style. :) You often cover very "normal" styles like midcentury modern, farmhouse, minimalist, etc etc. But what about things like cottagecore, french provincial, dark academia, "witchy," etc? I'd love a video from you covering more alternative styles and your opinion on making them work in a home cohesively! For example, have you seen Lulu Sapphire's home? It is VERY extra and beauty and the beast inspired with a more modern color palette!

Gilded mirrors are actually easy to DIY. Most of the stuff can be found on amazon and home depot. All you need is: 1) A mirror. Preferably an arched or oval mirror. 2) Center onlay. This goes on top of the mirror. It's the statement piece. 3) A long onlay to go on the sides and maybe the bottom. *optional 4) flexible molding trim 5) A second center onlay to put on the bottom of your mirror *Optional 6) Extra strength glue (I used gorilla glue). 7) Gold spray pray paint. You can also use gold leaf paint if you like. 8) Painters tape. First, you need to arrange the onlays and trim on the mirror until you get your desired look. Glue the pieces once you are satisfied with the look. Then you tape up the mirror part so the spray paint doesn't strain the mirror. Then spray paint it gold. Voila! Pro tips: -Get a mirror from Craig's list or a thrift store. Way cheaper! -you can use wood putty to fill the gaps between the onlays and trims. This adds a smoother more customed finish -Make sure the design on the onlays and trims are cohesive so they look like one piece when you glue them, together. Take your time and compare each piece before buying. My DIY mirror cost me $250. $150 mirror and the rest of the stuff added to about $100. The mirror I wanted cost well over$1,000.

I have a formal dining room, but it’s not very big. There’s a swinging door that leads to the kitchen. When swung inward, it can remain open by itself and actually takes up a lot of room. I considered a round dining table at one time, but realized it wouldn’t work. I have since decided that large round tables aren’t very aesthetically pleasing (in most cases) and rectangular is my favorite shape for a dining table. The round shape is usually best for a bistro, entryway, coffee/cocktail, or end table. Larger round tables can end up looking like something belonging in a conference room. They are difficult to dress, take up room unnecessarily, and have lots of unusable space in the center. 💜
@kimhaas75863 жыл бұрын
Welp, normally, I agree with everything you say but I have to draw the line with the round table. Yes, they are more expensive. I have a nice walnut table that I bought from Domain when it closed a local store in NJ. I’d been eyeing that sucker for more than a year. They finally reduced it to a price I could afford and threw in 4 Biedermeier style chairs. I love them but mainly because my dining rooms have always been perfect squares and they fit like they were designed for the space. PLUS, the table came with a leaf. So, I can expand the table to seat 8 in a pinch. I’ve never had large houses and the round table has always been more than enough. Finally, it’s just gorgeous. My BF is a carpenter and he lusts after it. I consider that an endorsement.
@koalaeucalyptus3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I adore round tables as well. Sure, they're not as grand, but to be honest it's a lot easier to fit extra chairs around a round table for a fun game night than it is around a rectangular one. I learned that from barbecuing with my parents: a 4-seater round table has fit 7-8 people easily when it's barbecue time! We'd just carry the round table over a bit and bring some extra chairs... made great memories that way. In my own home, I decided to go for a round table exactly because of that, and the flow around it is great (it's an apartment with dining and sitting integrated).

@@koalaeucalyptus We've got a round table. The rectangle one was just too big for the space we had. Especially as one side of the rectangle table couldn't sit a family member because it was hard to get to. The round one makes it easier to maneuver into that part near the window. I just need to crochet a table runner or table cloth for it. Or maybe just a round center piece.

IMHO, round tables are fine as long as they are small and have leaves so that in a rectangular room, you get the option to make it functional for a larger group. If there are only two or three people at the table the small round is fine and quite lovely. If you want to have a dinner for 6 - 10, then just throw in a leave or two and you have a rounded rectangular table that gives plenty of walking around space. Additionally, there are no sharp edges to bump into as there is with a true rectangle. Maybe that issue is just mine as I do tend to be a little clumsy at times. :)

The wicker pendant also does not illuminate an area it does mood lighting and leaves shadows of the wicker design. If you have an are that needs light skip it. They are really nice outdoors.

Word of wisdom as usual " like it and leave it at the store " needs to be a nations holiday cuz girl Ive been Guilty 🙋🏽♀️and now I've been trying to re coop some coins by selling items in my yard sale this week( which has gone well) but I've learned a valuable lesson and you jus reinforced it" like it but leave it at the store!" I do have a poof I agree with what you say about what some of the downside can be if I'm not present when the grandkids come over g pa thinks it's ok for them to launch it like a toy 😡 or big pillow. I'm gonna get a concrete one and let them try that ( lol) thank you for helping us ❤️

I disagree about the pouf.I was born in the Middle east and they are a staple in my living room. I have two and I stack them up next to my sofa, they do not interfere with the flow of the room at all
@erikabraga1003 жыл бұрын
I agree 1000% with you. The guilty mirror is not my style AT ALL, I think it’s beautiful when I see in someone else’s house but I am a very straight clean lines person, I don’t like anything ornate. And the cloud sofa is beautiful in pictures but in person as you said it’s only nice when you fluff them all the time and I actually love a firm seating, I like support and firmness.

I sooo agree with not getting a round dining table. I currently have one that is too big for the space (we really thought it would fit) and now I'm trying to figure out how long I have to live with this table before I can get a new one w/o too much complaining from my husband.
@aleia46543 жыл бұрын
Agreed with everything else, but disagree with aspects of the round table. Yes, they can be impractical in relatively small dining rooms (I.e. those big enough for a standard rectangular table, but not much more extra room to manoeuvre). But they can be lovely in big spaces too! They can provide an open-plan, large living/dining space with a wonderful centre, especially sat under a chandelier. You can often expand them quite organically too. I agree there’s definitely lots of spaces where round tables don’t work nicely, but I don’t think they should be sequestered to tiny spaces or nooks.

Very informative!! I am SO bad at seeing something at the store and falling in love with it and buy it with no idea where I can use it!! I have tons of brand new decor and and home items still sitting in bags that I just HAD to have and now gave nowhere to put them!! :( It's such a waste and I most definitely CANNOT afford to buy things I don't need! I need to seriously stop and think before making purchases. It's outta control 😆 Thanks for sharing and reminding me that you can love something and leave it in thee store!! I am gonna picture you saying that every time i go to make an unnecessary purchase!!! TFS!!❤

Yeah, my round oak dining table is not practical. It takes up too much space in my kitchen. I wish it could be 1/2 circle then it would hug the wall giving a less cluttered look but still a quality beautiful table for two. Any ideas? Could my table still do that with a little work...it comes apart because it has a leaf. Look forward to your ideas, thx! :)

I'm totally boho so yes I have the pendant, the round table and the pouf, in the same room 😆 the pendant was an upgrade from a 'boob' ceiling light and it hangs low so I vacuum it, the table holds the majority of my livingroom plants and the pouf has been claimed by my cat, I made a removable cover for it. I do have a simple round mirror and my aunt's vintage couch. I've been wanting a new one but unsure about what kind. I will keep an eye out for lumpy cushions!

I have a small round kitchen table that fits nicely and I went with a rectangular one in my dining room. They both only seat 4 because I have a SMALL house. Lol Edited to say I have a pouf. My cats think it is their bed so it’s constantly covered in either fur or a blanket to keep the fur off. It is not as sturdy as it looked online and falls into the “glorified beanbag “ category. I do like it but I sort of wish I’d gotten a chair instead…

I like too much structure to a sofa to have a cloud sofa, maybe in a space like a basement but it doesn’t matter who has one it always looks messy to me so it could not be in a main living area for me. I love my round table it seats 6 but I agree they are more expensive- I found mine at a model home warehouse
