Engine knocking is caused by pre-detonation of the compressed gases igniting before the cylinder reaches top dead center which affects the timing in a sense. It is not trapped gases

@TheNYgolfer
@TheNYgolfer 4 жыл бұрын
Mr Wilson - There is no such thing as "pre-detonation". Engine knock, aka detonation, occurs when the fuel air mixture violently explodes instead of burning evenly. Fuel that is too low in octane can cause this. Lead was used in the past to prevent it and still is used in 100LL (100 octane Low Lead) aviation fuel. Also, under normal conditions an engine that is properly timed, will fire the spark plug BEFORE the piston reaches top dead center. Timing on engines is always set several degrees before top dead center (BTDC) because it takes time for the fuel/air mixture to start burning once the plug fires. It is not instantaneous. Pre-ignition is a condition where the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder is ignited before the spark plug even fires. That is caused by a hot spot inside the cylinder.
@herbertshallcross9775
@herbertshallcross9775 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheNYgolfer Pre-detonation is more commonly called pre-ignition. Yes, sometimes ignition timing is deliberately set to ignite the fuel-air charge before tdc, taking into account things like the rpms, and the time the wave front takes to propagate across the cylinder, but pre-ignition is the phenomenon of the fuel-air mixture igniting too soon, either because the compression is too high for the octane rating, or something like carbon on the cylinder head or piston is still glowing hot, creating an ignition point. This early ignition hammers on the rising piston, opposing the piston, wrist pin, connecting rod, crankshaft and flywheels inertia. Sometimes you can hear it on acceleration as a "pinging" or worse, a knocking sound. Allowed to continue, it will destroy an engine. People think higher octane gasoline will make their car which is designed for regular to produce more power. Higher octane fuels are designed to prevent engines that are designed to admit more fuel into the cylinder and compress it more to make more power from destroying themselves. If your engine wasn't designed to need the protection against pre-ignition high octane provides, you are wasting your money using it, and worse, the additives in high octane fuel actually have lower specific energy than the gasoline they are displacing in the blend, so higher octane fuels actually have slightly less energy per unit volume than regular. Your regular fuel car actually produces slightly more power on regular fuel than on premium.

Am I the only person who thinks that flying cars accessible to the masses is a completely stupid idea? There's enough badly driven, poorly maintained cars out there do we really need them falling from the sky as well?
@firsttimer2254
@firsttimer2254 5 жыл бұрын
The early 1970's attempt in this video isn't the only one. The flying car remains a staple in Science Fiction, but there's certainly a laundry of reasons it hasn't enjoyed mainstream success. It's telling that driverless cars which remain rolling on the ground are being pioneered now when computing capabilities jave caught up to the idea. I believe current mass transit technology, from trains to skytrains and subways, even a humble effort at car pooling or your humble cab driver, already do a better job. The Hyperloop is going to break through as an interesting entry into the transport lexicon, whether people are killed or not during its development.

3:55 - Engine knock - "A shockwave caused by small pockets of air trapped in the car's engine". 'Engine knock' aka ping or detonation, is the air fuel mixture igniting too early in the piston's stroke. This can be caused by one or a combination of the following - excess heat (either intake or internal temps), lower octane fuel than needed (relating to ignition advance, compression ratio, forced induction, etc), too advanced ignition timing, or a lean air fuel mixture.

The problem with most of the early failed inventions was a complete lack of testing PRIOR to a human getting involved in the invention. Even in WWII, the US pushed weapons out the door without having an idea if they would work, requiring unfortunate soldiers to man the damned things. The floating tank comes to mind, that almost all instantly sank during the D-Day invasion. They may as well have created a floating boat anchor for the Navy.

The Brazen bull invented by Perillos of Athens, who wanted to make a name for himself. The Brazen Bull was a torture/execution device. The victim would be placed inside the nearly air tight bronze bull statue and shut in. Then a fire would be lit under the bull and the resulting heat would kill and eventually boil off the bodies liquids, the expanding gases would escape through whistling spouts at the bull's nostrils thus signifying the completion of the process. Unfortunately for the inventor, it was demonstrated to the mad ruler Phalaris who wanted an immediate demonstration and commanded that the inventor himself should be the first victim.

Engine knocking is due to excessive compression for given fuel stability, resulting in explosive ignition, as opposed to normal gradual combustion. This haven't been a problem at the beginning of car industry due to tiny compression ratios of the engines at the time. Adding lead to the fuel increases stability, allowing greater compression without knocking. Refining gasoline to a higher purity achieves the same effect but is more costly than using lead, so leading the fuel dominated fuel markets for long time.

@@Irishmule169 yes. BUT, don't think a large car is automatically safe. Or that bad car defects aren't STILL deliberately sold. The Ford Crown Vic had the SAME problem. The gas tank is BEHIND the rear axle, which means it's insanely vulnerable in a rear end impact. Sometimes, door locks and seat belts jam, and you literally burn to death. You have air bags: either not inflating when needed, or with enough force to decapitate smaller people. You have tire failures. (NEVER ignore a bubble on the side of a tire, EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to have an egg in the sidewall!) Seat belts: sometimes, they don't lock or latch right when needed. Sometimes they rip in half. Someomes they unspool entirely. Gas pedal and brake issues. The list goes on and on. It's not terribly uncommon. Look up Brian Chase, still unsafe at any speed. Scariest book I ever read.

Fiberglass or aluminum best materials for flying cars. Maybe even plastic.
@muskokamike127
@muskokamike127 5 жыл бұрын
@@hellfire1820 actually carbon fibre is better. Lighter than fibreglass and as strong as steel. But the whole problem is weight. To enable enough wing area to lift the weight of the car, engine, and passengers, the wings have to be so large as to be impractical in real life. See, a cessna on the ground is basically no different than a car. 4 seats, engine, steerable wheels..... The best concept to date is a hover bike.....basically a large 4 rotor drone large enough to carry people. The issue now is to make it practical, you have to have longer flight times and that can't be achieved with the latest tech in batteries. Once that hurdle is overcome, they will be mass produced. I personally thing a hydrogen fusion generator will be the power source. (kind of like a small nuclear reactor that directly generates the energy needed as opposed to making steam to power a turbine). Another method is anti-gravity systems. They are theoretically possible, they've created them, but again, the energy required to generate an anti-gravity field is enormous.

Fun video. You are confusing engine knock with cavitation. Engine knock is the pre-ignition or fuel, before the desired point pf ignition. Caused by heat, directly and indirectly related to pressure. Hot spots cause the ignition of fuel before spark is introduced. In extreme situations this can cause dieseling in a gasoline engine, and extensive damage. Early gasoline used lead as both a lubricant and an octane booster. It was excellent. By raising the octane rating you actually make the fuel more difficult to ignite. Cavitaion is when a fluid under vacuum creates a 'bubble' or void. When that void collapses it's like a very tiny depth charge that can cause pitting and damage to pumps, valves, hydraulic surfaces.
