In my experience, Japanese people don't hate foreigners... they hate RUDE and IGNORANT foreigners. I love the culture and learning about the ways other countries live, so for me all of my interactions have been very respectful, and most of my questions stem from a place of curiosity or trying to learn about something I don't understand. I don't approach with the attitude of "ALL JAPANESE PEOPLE MUST LOVE ANIME AND WEAR KIMONOS!!!" None of that stereotypical bullshit. You learn by being open, honest, and accepting new ideas, not arriving with preconceived notions of how things are going to happen.

1. Traditional I'd imagine something in lines of Shakuhachi, drums etc, modern it would be something like jpop or anime music. 2. Usually doesn't hear it often until someone tries to talk about elections... 3. Hard to get rid of stereotypes. 4. It would be really silly if everyone would talk like that. 5. Yeah, everyone is different especially when it comes to this topic so it can't be generalized

What are some tips or any advice you would give to foreigners who visit Japan for the first time? (Not only people who love anime but are also interested in the culture)
@Alex201147 жыл бұрын
When referring to "Japanese music" one must ask themselves whether the reference is to traditional music of the country and culture or whether it is to what we hear coming from idol groups, like AKB48, Sakura Gakuin, or Nogizaka46, which are closer to mainstream pop, though differ slightly in composition from the American or Korean counterparts. Its the same in German music and just about every other country. I'm in a German band here on the east coast of the US and we play music from both sides of the question I posed earlier. We play both German traditional music, like marches and waltzes, but we also play German pop, which, once again, differs slightly as it seems to be lighter and more upbeat like it was written for some gigantic party.

there is just one thing that I really want to know... If no one talks with that "accent" when they speak English in Japan... Where did the stereotypical "accent" originate from? I mean why do people think of this Miyagi / Master Splinter (ninja turtles) "accent" as being how Japanese talk English? Why did they even do it in these shows.. curious now

In the north of Brazil they use the "r" sound as if it were an "h" sound most of the time. It's sometimes silent. In the south, they exaggerate the "r". Take my name for example, Fernanda. In America, it's pronounced like it looks (fern-and-uh) In the north of Brazil, it's like an "h" (Feh-nun-da). In the South, (Fair-nun-da).

I'm Greek and I know for a fact that asian countries and especially Japan are way more interested in Greek history, mythology culture etc, you guys respect our country and feel more "greek" inside than most of our people here. The sad truth is that due to corrupted politicians, garbage teaching system, media pushing western trends and basically the whole picture of last years in Greece, people are afraid to even say out loud what they feel/believe to avoid being called fascist, ethnicist, xenophobic and a lot more. :/ Anyway! Stay awesome my man! Keep the videos coming! :D

Another thing about myth #2 is that most native Japanese speakers, while can theoretically pronounce "R" with years and years of practice, don't pronounce it the same way native English speakers do. It definitely does sound more like "L" or a slightly rolled "R", as opposed to English where "R" is pronounced with a throaty "arrre" or "urrr". This is something I've learned to noticed as I grew up with the name Rina and being bilingual.

So I know from watching enough anime and Japanese dramas that there is a difference in how they speak. I wasn't expecting loud and dramatic anime speak by any means. I love the sounds of Japanese people speaking. It is soothing. What I wasn't prepared for however is how much Japanese people MUMBLE and SLUR their words. I practiced. I studied. But when I went to Japan last year and I would hear them talk, I could only pick out a few words. It all sort of becomes one big rolled, not very well enunciated word instead of a sentence. Learning from Rosetta and other websites, the words are pronounced crisp and clear. I had a hard time understanding actual verbal Japanese while there simply because the pronunciation was much less audible. Nani kore in learning was "Na-nee Koh-ray" but when I would hear it, it's more like "nahneekole" and I am not joking. At a restaurant, all I could do was stare at the waitress as she gave me my food and spoke. I was recording a show at the time so I also recorded her. Her face said "this person does not understand me. Whatever. I will say what I am supposed to and leave." Upon rewetching the video later, I had to use headphones and rewind about 4 times before I finally was able to separate her words in my brain to pick out that she was asking if I had ordered the beef dish. I did not answer her at the time, because she mumbled it all together and I had no idea what she said to me. Turns out, I actually did know what she said and how to answer, had I been able to UNDERSTAND HER.

some of those stereotypes are similar to what people think about indians. Like when people try to imitate an indian accent they usually imitate the south indian accent. the rest of india have a slightly different accent. I was on a call on skype with this american guy and he told me i sounded slightly british ahaha XD

Yess the stereotype of hate is so truuuue. I remember when I was at my sister school, my friend Miki nicknamed me Kuro-chan and my best friend flipped out and screamed at her for being racist. I honestly did not care because it wasn't out of hate or anything, it was ignorance. But my little Australian best friend was soooooo mad that Miki kept bowing in apology and I was like "dude, tf?"
@JessyChong8 жыл бұрын
imjustamusician wait what? I don't get it. It's racist how? And are you angry to Miki or your bestfriend?

Jessy Chong No my friend thought that Miki was being rude and trying to distance herself from me because Kuro means black. So, she named me black-chan but I didnt see it as racist but ignorant. She didnt mean any harm but my friend took it that way.

I knew the part about the L and the R! Funnily enough, where I come from there is a stereotype about how allegedly _Chinese_ people pronounce all Rs as Ls. Then again, to a lot of people here all Asians are Chinese here. People are such idiots ... I have always been wondering about the way characters in Anime/ Japanese video games tend to talk which to some extend is also apparent in some live action shows and movies. Is that some kind of throwback to some form traditional Japanese theater or something?
