hey Joe-sensei, is it weird for people to add "watashi" to all the sentences, or should we just disregard it... for example, watashi wa William desu. vs William desu. Watashi no uchi wa KL desu. vs Uchi wa KL desu. Watashi wa gohan o tabemasu vs just simply Gohan o tabemasu. Same question regarding You/Anata.
@RanmaruRei7 жыл бұрын
Just omit it in some sentences. That's all. I recommend to omit 'anata' as much as possible.

Hello, Sensei Joe I am new to your channel and I must say that I really enjoy the videos I have seen by you so far, currently I am in the search for an app that will help me learn Japanese, I have-so far- found no luck in finding an app to my liking. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on a good learning app for me. Thank you, I look forward to your response, have a wonderful day.
@alter9467 жыл бұрын
This is very helpful. I never understood the nuance differences between "boku" and "ore" before, and the way you used an example to explain "ore" made it easier to comprehend. I'm curious about honorifics. I know the general differences between suffixes like "sama, san, chan, and kun" from the glossaries that you find at the back of every translated manga. What I'm wondering is how the prefix "o" might change a form of address, like "nii-san" versus "onii-san." I'm assuming that "onii-san" shows even more respect than "nii-san," but are there even more nuances, does it imply something about the relationship between two people. And what would the difference between "nii-sama" and "onii-san" be? Would one be more respectful than the other or do they level out to about the same meaning? And where would "onii-chan" fit into that spectrum?
@10010110110107 жыл бұрын
GureiOokami Chan is more informal San is fine and Sama is really respectful o is called the honorific o, it's also sometimes pronounced other than o like go 御 is the Kanji
@alter9467 жыл бұрын
So what does the honorific o/go really add to a form of address? What's the difference between "tou-san" and "otou-san?" Does the "o" make something more formal? Does it imply more respect? Does it say something about the closeness and relationship between two people? Maybe it doesn't really do anything at all? There are so many subtleties in the Japanese language and I'm interested in the minuet nuances.
@10010110110107 жыл бұрын
GureiOokami It's giving more respect usually. In terms of relatives, it's easy to get to a point where you don't normally think about it and are just kinda used to calling your brother or sister a certain way. It's generally more respectful.
@alter9467 жыл бұрын
Oh, okay. Then what about "otou-san" versus "tou-sama?" (The first with the honorific "o" and the second without.) In this case would one be more respectful than the other? Or maybe they're respectful in different ways?
@10010110110107 жыл бұрын
GureiOokami I would say in different ways. the tousama would be more "respectful" though this stuff is hard to explain. Like if your family is important or something you could say all otousama. But even just a little seriously you could say "Otousan". But this isn't easy to understand I guess.

Jhae Eusasiaus It's weird but if you're writing a story or something and want to portray a girl a certain way they can say boku or ore. Normally in real life though it's fairly weird (i.e., don't do it. The nail sticking out gets hammered down). Watakushi is another pronunciation of 私, it's just more formal than watashi

If "watashi" is used in most situations for females, when are "atashi" and "watakushi" used?
@xionmemoria59397 жыл бұрын
Atashi is the closest thing to a female "ore" you're going to get because it's SLIGHTLY more casual, and females are *totally* incapable of being impolite or above someone in standing. liek omg we're delicate flowers and we must be uber polite to all males zomg (Sarcasm alerrrrt. Romance languages pull the same shit) Watakushi is one you will NEVER use. Salesmen use it to suck up, that's about it. So unless you happen to bump into the emperor or his family, don't bother with watakushi. I rage over this topic a liitle bit. Dat feelin when a Japanese guy 3 years your junior at school calls you "chan" but you get looks for using "kun" and "atashi" with him. e.o
@adolys56167 жыл бұрын
It is actually "watashi", but some people pronounce it "atashi" by getting rid of that w. It's like saying "Imma" for "I'm gonna" watashi is a shortened word for 'watakushi' which is amore formal way of saying watashi :) (i got this info from joe and another person in this comment section so if it's wrong then don't blame me :P)
@mashimero7 жыл бұрын
Xion Memoria How does it work in Romance languages? Are there different personal pronouns, or certain words/expressions women aren't supposed to use? I don't know much about Romance languages so I'm curious. Also, that bit about the Japanese guy was surprising. I was under the impression that in Japan you have to be super polite around your upperclassmen/senpai (and it slightly baffles me to this day), but apparently, that's not always the case.
