Rego or registration 3rd party only covers personal injury if you have a crash. Lyn

Down here in Vic the 3rd party charge goes to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) which is for medical and rehab. They have their own wards in hospitals etc. Speed cameras are hidden here in Vic. Personal plates here are in Vic come in various patterns and styles of lettering. 2 Toll roads here in Melbourne.

The way vehicle registration fees are structured varies a bit from state to state, however in all states you cannot drive a car without "CTP" (compulsory 3rd party) or its equivalent. That insurance only covers personal injury to other people. In NSW you have to arrange the CTP separately and the state authorities automatically get notified by the insurer that it's been done (usually within an hour). Without it, your car registration application will immediately be rejected. "Comprehensive" insurance is what we call the optional insurance that covers everything else, so damage to the Porsche you collided with, damage to your own car, theft, etc. Yes our vehicle registration taxes, which can be quite high, are frittered away on everything except road maintenance too!
@RobertLewis-el9ub3 ай бұрын
Rego normally covers - road tax depending on vehicle use (commercial/private), Third Party Insurance is to cover compensation for other injured parties and in many states an Emergency Services contribution (some states free ambulance).

Can have any plate so long as no-one else has it. Reg numbers are not year of reg based like UK. The renewal date depends on the date when registered anniversary. How do you drive a new car in the UK that you bought mid month. Vic does not have an annual RWC test, NSW does.
@TheGreatEmigrate2 ай бұрын
The road tax would start the beginning of that month
@richlawrence41602 ай бұрын
@@TheGreatEmigrate Thanks, strange system, do not buy a car on 29th of the month, get only 1 day tax for one month cost. After that makes not much difference year on year until car is eventually scrapped, we cancel on any day and get a refund. For UK, would have to keep it going till end of the month (don't scrap on the 1st of the month).
@TheGreatEmigrate2 ай бұрын
@richlawrence4160 yeah or sell to get a tax refund middle of the month as they will start if from the next month
@richlawrence41602 ай бұрын
@@TheGreatEmigrate there is another difference. Usually, the Reg (car tax) stays on the car when it is sold from person to person. Just transfer the ownership for a $fee of course which is much simpler than cancelling and re registering. There are some exceptions where the reg is cancelled before sale - eg sold without RWC (MOT) in Victoria, but this devalues the car as it needs a special permit to take it to a RWC tester, and then to the registration centre and hang around for hours while they check the engine and body numbers and other admin. Moving interstate also needs a new registration under different process, rules, RWC test standards etc.

In NSW there has to be a sign warning of the camera and they are not hidden. QLD loves its revenue that's for sure, lived there for many years.

Here in South Australia there are no toll roads and no annual roadworthy testing of private owned vehicles ( the equal of the UK MOT ), but there is testing of taxis, ubers & buses There is a fee to transfer a plate from one car to another but I think it is low enough not to be a problem to someone who wants something other than the standard issue plate

Yes, this is why used cars are a little more expensive in SA near the Victorian border. It was easy (or was easy) to buy a used cheap bomb car from the SA side of the border that if bought in Victoria wouldn't pass an inspection. These cars can then be transferred to a Victorian registration without needing an inspection as long as the car was registered in SA. Not sure if this can still be done these days though.

On the highways around Brisbane (like the on the Gateway going to the airport), the police are using average speed cameras. So they will measure how long you took to go between to two points and calculate your average speed and if it is above the speed limit your busted.
@FromTheGong3 ай бұрын
NSW was forced to reinstate speed camera ahead warning signs and must be clearly visible.Thankfully the van cameras are only seen a few times a year in the Gong but almost every traffic light has a fixed speed camera. Some even without red light cameras. That's pure revenue raising.
@artistjoh3 ай бұрын
If the revenue is being raised only off those breaking the law, and those of us who drive within the road rules are not being charged, how is that a problem? Revenue should be raised from those who endanger other people. Sounds very fair to me.

@@artistjoh Not when fines are issued for 53km/h in a 50 zone. I saw the fine that was issued, 3k's over. But the red light runners who are the real danger can go through any red light they want if it has no red light camera warning. Cameras don't worry me because I don't and won't break any road law no matter how trivial it may be. I'm the one who gets blasted by an impatient driver behind me because I will fully stop at every stop sign even if there are no vehicles on the road.

@@FromTheGong 53 is still speeding, and too many people accelerate when they see amber. They think having to stop is a problem. I am like you, I stop. Nothing, except a medical emergency is worth speeding through amber, and a genuine emergency, with hospital records that show it was literally a life and death matter where seconds count, is likely to get a dismissal in court, especially for 3k over.,
