16 Aussie Christmases for me now. Very different here. I do like not having to listen to Christmas songs as much. Have noticed Nova radio play the new ones which is unusual. Normally you never hear them. Aussie Christmas build up is usually: Shopping Christmas lights viewing. Some streets go crazy and listed on media sources. Christmas carols concerts outdoors. The cities host Christmas events of various things. Food on Christmas day is often ham but most generally do a feast of various around ham. I love seafood here it is the best in the world you should try it. All of it. Definitely my number one go to in Queensland. Decorations come down from boxing day to before New Years eve. Rarely see them by New Year. NYE is bigger than UK. A lot more party's and things going on. Everyone goes out and the public transport is free runs all night. So don't be afraid to go out.

Merry Xmas to both of you. Are you planning any day trips during the holidays? There are plenty of different places to see on the Sunshine Coast, there is an authentic English Castle at Bli Bli (Sunshine Castle) that you can walk around and view the different displays they have. There is also the Sea Life aquarium at Mooloolaba that's enormous and worth a visit. It is a lot quicker to go across the Gateway Bridge, but you will have to set up an account with Linkt the Toll Road company and it costs about $5 each way..

After a few years, it will feel like xmas. You could do other cold foods like pavlova, potato salads, pasta salads, cold lamb or chicken or turkey. Lots of dips and cold desserts. You will eventually get over the desire for a big hot meal on the day. Even go somewhere where you are catered for on xmas day.

When you do buy, are you looking to stay in the bay area? I grew up in the eastern suburbs on the southside e.g. Carina, Camp Hill, Coorparoo. When I got married, we bought our first home in the eastern suburbs. Then in 2000 we moved to the bay area, been here ever since. Love it the most.

Beyond Blue is an organisation that offers support to Australians with anxiety or depression. They had an advertising campaign encouraging us to ask someone "Are you okay?" if that person seemed down in the dumps. So, asking an Australian "Are you all right?", you are implying you feel that person may be suffering from depression.

Re your questions about Aussie Christmas experiences. People’s traditions vary a fair amount from what I have heard. Here in Queensland in our family the kids got their Santa presents very early morning. We generally then drove to our parents house or some who lived further away would be staying there already. We always used to have a light breakfast gathering with most of the three generations (parents, 6 children and partners and various numbers of grandchildren and eventually some of their partners) and then walked across the street for a swim (my parents lived right on the beach for 30 years). After a swim we would shower and change for present opening mid morning with Christmas snacks and drinks. The kids would play with their new presents and each other while we organised lunch. Then Christmas lunch which was inside but large glass doors and windows open for breeze and fans too! Ham, roast pork and roast chicken served cold (so cooked the day before or very early on Christmas morning) with 3 or 4 salads. Then a choice of a couple of desserts like pavlova, fruit salad, or Christmas pudding with icecream. Drinks of your choice at lunch too. With so many of us we shared in the workload with each bringing food we mostly prepared at home and coordinated with each other beforehand about what each would do. Lots of Eskys! I remember as a young child having a hot roast lunch some years but never as a teenager or adult. After cleaning up after lunch adults would usually sit or stand around chatting, drinking, eating snacks, playing pool or playing with the kids with their new games or water pistols. Some might go for another swim with some of the kids and others would head off mid afternoon to a Christmas dinner at their in-laws house if they lived fairly near. Very difficult to face another large meal at night!

Regarding Long Service Leave, the best is probably public sector jobs. I know in NSW, changing jobs within the state public service allowed the LSL to rollover to the next department and the next, etc, since the Government is the same employer.

On withdrawal of money from your superannuation balance, the only reason now available is for personal hardship, usually sickness. The current policy is that any superannuation funds accumulated during your working life are preserved until you reach age 60. Our Superannuation System has recently been defined in legislation "to preserve saving to deliver income for a dignified retirement, alongside government support, in an equitable and sustainable way" You are hearing the musing from the Leader of Opposition on being able to withdraw money to buy a house. This is not the law in Australia. The bigger difference is that payments from employers into our superannuation accounts are mandatory with no opt-out. The other differences include the following Superannuation Guarantee payments are taxed on entry at 15% for most people, investment earnings are taxed at 15% AND on retirement no tax is payable on investments for your superannuation balance. This is called in the financial industry TTE. After previous research, the UK retirement system is Exempt on Entry, Exempt for Investment Earnings and Taxed in Retirement aka EET What we don't have is National Insurance. We do not have an inheritance tax, however some tax may be payable when your superannuation balance passes to the next generation. How that helps!

Super won't continually increase. We've been slowly going up from 9% to 12%. Which we reach and stop at next year. LSL was first introduced to allow immigrants time to travel back home (normally by boat). And encourage them to come back.

That must of taken a while to get home by boat

Casual working is shite, there’s no job security and the lack of leave entitlement is awful. You just have to accept that if you’re sick you don’t get paid. I’m hopeful that next year I have a full time role lined up. That will be the first time in my 20 years of working

In the 1960's in far North QLD it was compulsory to wear hats but most of us went to school barefooted. I agree that school uniforms are expensive but I'm glad my kids had to wear school uniforms. In the 1990's and 2000's l bought my kids "school logo" uniform items from their school's second hand donation sale. (It was a way to raise money for the school and save money for us parents.) The rest of their uniforms I bought at Kmart or Big W and then purchased iron-on school logos, again from their school. They definitely didn't have specific school socks. I can't imagine wearing blazers and ties to school. When I got married in Victoria, it was 43C and my hubby wore a short sleeved shirt with no tie or jacket!
@TheGreatEmigrate16 күн бұрын
Yeah I don't think blazers and ties are weather appropriate here

You can get vinegar at all chippies. Ask for it. The standard is white vinegar. You would have seen it not realised. Also at Samson's in Raby Bay harbour they definitely have a bottle of malt vinegar. I always hunt it down at that fish bar as I live in Thornlands have done since 2008. We mostly go to Chumleys for fish and chips. Mainly because they sell pints of beer. There is also a British Yorkshire chippy van in the area. The last time was at Bacchus Brewery in capalaba a few weeks ago. Had a few British beers and fish and chips there. Try London spuds. They are a taste sensation. Also for a British balti Birmingham recipe go to Haveli Indian restaurant Victoria Point. I am originally from the black country love chicken balti and Haveli have it exactly same as back in Brum for taste. They don't serve it in a balti dish thou. But for taste it is spot on. When I asked they told me where they got the recipe and it is from the UK. So not the Indian version.
