Because everyone went underwater on so-called "long term investment" Jordans and LeBron's after the peak people are only interested in short term modern flips. Young kids saw what collecting got people after the boom. Massive losses and missed opportunities. They don't care about vintage players. They don't want to sit on a card for decades. They want thrills and instant gratification. These kinds of cards are not attractive to young kids who only want quick money.

I own the Mahomes PSA 9, Bryant PSA 8, Brady PSA 8 and Lebron PSA 8. When buying them I honestly never expected them to rise because they already established their greatness. Once you buy at that point, there just isn’t much room to go up because their GOAT status is already baked in the prices. In saying that, as a collector these cards are iconic to me and love having them in my collection. If I were truly buying cards for a long-term investment, I would shift my strategy of buying different cards but it wouldn’t be as fun. Love when you do these deep dive videos, it’s a wake-up call to all the ‘investors’ in the hobby.

I thought I was getting a steal and bought the Brady 2000 chrome PSA 10 for $10,500. I saw the steady drop and got out for 7,500. With fees/sales tax that is my biggest loss to date and I absolutely don’t hold losses (they tie up cash). My lesson learned is that there were just too many sales of that card sometimes 3 a week that were ending around same time. I could definitely see it getting to 5k.

So now we are calling “shill bidding” PROTECTING a card????? Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!
@TheSportsCardDad11 ай бұрын
No, these are 2 separate things. Regarding the Mahomes Prizm, there are folks shill bidding these, and then I believe there are also people continuing to buy additional copies which keeps the price up. But also especially with him winning his 3rd SB, there is certainly actual organic demand for the card
@jchristner8211 ай бұрын
imo it's not a shill if the bidder is actually willing to pay if they win. Then they are just another bidder who would be doubling down

I am still saving for a PSA 9 Bowman chrome refractor of Brady. About 25% of the way there. When I get to 75% I may end up selling some of my other Brady rcs to get there faster. Personally I'd stay away from the Kobe because of the green hulking.

I actually have to disagree. While many type 1 photos have skyrocketed, theres many that also haven't caught on, including many type 1, type II and even type III. Ebay is scattered with them where very few know of their true value. Popularity does seem to be rising on eBay lately, but most of these photos are often more sought after with autos than they are without autos, because thats how its always been up until the last decade or so. I cant sell very many photos well without an autograph. The few that have been autographed, only sold on auction for the value of the auto. One of those was a Orlando Cepeda photo postcard used on his rookie card. Granted, it was more of a type II, but still, people only bought it for the auto, despite the image. A photo can be original, but if its autographed, theres a good chance the auto will overshadow the photo.
@TheSportsCardDad11 ай бұрын
Certainly wasn't saying ALL type 1 photos have gained traction. That would be like saying ALL sports cards gain traction, which of course we know isn't true
@vintagecollector534011 ай бұрын
@@TheSportsCardDad Yeah, but photos are much different than cards. Not only are they much rarer, but many rookie photos are more easily attainable and much more affordable. I've obtained at least six Ripken rookies, even including his image used on his Donruss rookie. The Donruss rookie photo ran me a whopping 7.42 shipped! Guy gave it away to me, because it wasn't autographed. Many people don't know what they have in the photograph world of collectibles. All they see is if it's autographed or not. Many still believe if it's not autographed, then it's junk. People have never done that with rookie cards.

You need context for these figures. Vintage cards are heavily dependent on eye appeal. The last avg sale for Jim Brown PSA 4 that is off centered vs. a PSA 4 centered card is $200 - $300 if you actually looked at the cards and auctions vs. reading data only.

@RandomCardGuy11 ай бұрын
@@TheSportsCardDad And yet you still reported the data figures as evidence for your analysis though you have no idea if the 1st and last sale had centering issues. 1st sale could have been perfectly centered and last sale could have been off centered which skews the analysis dramatically. I think comparing modern cards only might help the analysis more 🤷♂

Yup: What many in the hobby may not understand, is that eBay so sorry, isn't the center of the hobby universe. See; on the quiet tip, more and more hobby people, who know the value of a given card, understand that e-Commerce websites and grading companies have every intention of taking a bite out our collection's value. So instead of selling cards on those sites, they are simply selling them, independently / privately of what you are seeing on those sites. * Though you see the decrease in price, know that its nothing more than just how much the owner of the card ' would ultimately be gouged, should or had he or she actually put a given card up for sale.' ' ...I can't even tell you how many cards I've bought and sold for cash on the barrel via private sales, lol. ' Yes, Friends: The accomplished hobby people do have an internal sense of the values of their cards, regardless of market conditions.. ...I wouldn't worry. Prices for the good players always hold and grow in value. Its just that simple...! 🏆🤪👍❤❤
